Charles Henry Carpenter
Birth:
Mar. 11, 1838
Narragansett
Washington County
Rhode Island, USA
Death:
Sep. 10, 1909
Danvers
McLean County
Illinois, USA
Charles H. Carpenter died at his home in Danvers, Illinois on September 10, 1909.
Charles H. Carpenter was born at Narragansett, Rhode Island on March 11, 1838, where he lived until he enlisted in the Civil War. He joined Comapany C, Eighteenth, Conneticut Volunteer Infnantry, and served near to the close of the war. He was made sergeant and fought in a number of battles, and was captured at Winchester, Virginia in 1863, after three days fight. He was imprisoned in Libby and Belle Island until paroled and finally exchanged.
Mr. Carpenter was married to Miss Ellen Washburn of Lebanon, Conneticut on January 17, 1864. They moved to Illinois in 1865, and settled near Danvers, Illinois on a farm which has been the family home ever since. Mrs. Carpenter died in April, 1894.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James A. Hodge and Miss Kate Carpenter, and two grandchildren all of Danvers, Illinois. He also leaves one sister Mrs. Charles Strong of Lebanon, Connecticut.
Soon after coming to Danvers, Mr. Carpenter united with the Congregational Church and was for many years a deacon and was for over twenty years superintendent of the Sunday School of that church. When the Congregational Church disbanded about four years ago Mr. Carpenter united with the Presbyterian Church and was made an elder soon after.
The community of Danvers sustains a distinct loss by the death of Mr. Carpenter. He a pronounced supporter of all that was best on moral and religious life, and was especially interested in temperance work.

Emily Barney

NOTE: This is probably not the following Emily Barney ... unless they were divorced?
EMILY BARNEY (AFN: 1QDW-DW5 & IGI)
Birth:  09 MAY 1812   Charlotte, Chittenden, Vermont
Death:  02 JUL 1887
Father:  JOHN BARNEY (AFN: 1QDW-DTQ)
Mother:  LUCY ANN HUBBARD (AFN: 1QDW-DVX)
(Several in this family went to OH and IL.)

NOTE: The only other limited choice in the AF/IGI is the following ...
Emily Barney
Birth:  About 1815   Grafton, Grafton, New Hampshire
Death:  04 MAR 1842
Father:  William Ira Barney
Mother:  Betsey or Sabrina Walker

14764. William Carpenter

According to the 1850 Census, William was a farmer and had real estate worth of $11,000 in Norway, New York.
(The search on the 1850 Census was based upon Charles P Carpenter.)

According to the 1850 Census there was a Francis Johnson age 25 living in the household.  They sometimes had farm laborers listed in the household Census of the early 1800's.

Could this be?  NOPE.
I was looking at the 1860 census in Bureau Co. Ill and came across a lonely
Willliam Carpenter and family in the town of Fiskiliva, I think that's how
it looks like it is spelled.  This census was taken 12 June 1860.

547  William Carpenter  39 M Constable 1000, 200  born RI
    Manula    "        30 F                           OH
    Evaline   "         8 F                           IL
    Sarah M.  "         6 F                           IL
    Wm. J.    "         3 M                           IL
    Jane      "         1 F                           IL

This is an estimation based upon the age of the son during the 1850 Census and that Charles P was born in New York.  Beyond this there is no guarantee that William of Norway, Herkimer, NY is the true father of Charles P Carpenter. However, this William of Norway and father to Charles P is listed on the 1850 Census as being born in Rhode Island.
