JAMES CARPENTER.
Pbircipal Musician James Carpenter, son of Isaac H. and Abbie Perry Carpenter, was born in Wakefield, E. I., May 13, 1843. In 1861 when Gen. I. P. Rodman recruited Company E of the Second Regiment Rhode Island Volunteers, and went to camp on
Dexter Training Ground, Providence, James accompanied it, expecting to go to the
front. His parents withheld their consent, however, so after two weeks of tent life he was obliged to return home, which now was at Peacedale. Though disappointed
he patiently awaited another chance and when Capt. Rowland G. Rodman commenced
to recruit what eventually became Company G of the Seventh, young Carpenter and
a friend, Frank B. Holland, proved themselves valuable assistants. By day and by
night they played upon the fife and drum as required, visiting most sections of Washington County in the search for additional members. James enrolled himself August 8th, and acquitted himself creditably during the entire term of service. He

was made principal nmsician Dec. 15, 1864, when in Fort Hell, but was always
recognized as head flfer. After he was mustered out he consecrated his entire life to music. Not only does he give instruction on the piano, the flute, the cornet, and, the violin, but he is a manufacturer of the latter instrument. Tliough residing at Peacedale, his field of labor is co-extensive with Washington County. He is leader
of the Wakefield Band and instructor of the Lafayette Cornet Band. He married May 13, 1866, Mary E. Hill, by whom he had a son and daughter,
John R. and Jennie M., who are likewise skilled in the musical art, and assist their
sire in dispensing its knowledge for leagues in every direction.

24183. Joseph Harvey Carpenter Jr.

BIOGRAPHY: Joe was born and raised on a farm near WaKeeney, Kansas and attended the grade school in the Saline Valley. For high school he attended Enterprise Academy (a Seventh-day Adventist church school) near Enterprise, Kansas. He graduated from Union College in Lincoln Nebraska in 1943. Union College is located in Lincoln, Nebraska and is operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Thereafter he ran the family farm together with his father. He was an excellent mechanic and would have preferred that to farming. DEATH: Joe developed diabetes. When medical treatment could do nothing more for him, his sister, Helen Gillette, "went to Loma Linda because the doctor had told Mama they could do nothing for Joe and she felt Virginia needed help making arrangements getting him back to WaKeeney. The airline as I remember took him to Denver and we chartered a light plane from there and landed on the tiny private runway on somebody's farm north of Wakeeney. As we were landing the pilot said he didn't realixe the runway was THAT short but we went ahead and we made it. I think Mama met us, altho Ernie may have done it. Joe was so glad to see her. She was the most important person in his life. He had always been her ailing child. He lived for maybe 6 months, he was so sad that they could do nothing for him. When we told him we were taking him back to Kansas he said, "WHY? HOW am I going to go out on the tractor?" I stayed a few days or maybe a week or 2 and flew back to AK and didn't see him again. I went home for the funeral but should have gone before and helped them take care of him. I almost remember that we had to charter a plane all the way because the airline refused him. But that doesn't seem possible."--Helen Gillette, email to her son Lance, 1/3/2001.

Belle Carpenter
Birth:  Jul. 21, 1877
Missouri, USA
Death:  Mar. 24, 1954
Salem
Marion County
Oregon, USA
Belle’s cremated remains were never taken after her death and are still available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. More information about unclaimed cremains at OSH is available at http://www.oregon.gov/oha/amh/osh/pages/cremains.aspx A book by David Maisel and a short documentary film by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.
Belle was born in July 1877 in Missouri to Edwin Carpenter and Marie Gould. Her father was born in Vermont about 1826 and her mother was born in Wisconsin in the 1840s. Belle’s siblings included Bertie Leon (born in Missouri in July 1876), Vina (Missouri about 1879), William (Kansas in 1880). Vina, William and two other unidentified siblings did not survive childhood. In various censuses it was often reported Belle was unable to read and write although the others in her family were literate.
During the census of 1880 Belle was 2 years old and living with her parents and siblings in Stranger, Leavenworth County, Kansas. Her father was a farmer. In 1880 he and Belle’s sister, Bertie were sick with “ague,” an illness involving fever and/or chills. Siblings William and Vina died between 1880 and 1885. In the Kansas censuses of 1885 and 1895 Belle was living with her parents and sister Bertie in Stranger.
Sister Bertie married Charles S. Mears about 1899. Charles was a farmer born in 1870 in Ohio. In the 1900 census Belle was living in Stranger, Kansas with her widowed mother, sister Bertie and Charles Mears. During the 1905 Kansas census Belle and her mother lived in Leavenworth, Kansas with Bertie and her family. In the 1910 censuses Belle and her mother were living in Battle Ground, Clark County, in southern Washington with Bertie, Charles and their children. Charles supported the family as a hay farmer. At the time of the 1920 census Belle and his mother were living in Kent, Sherman County, in north central Oregon with Belle’s sister Bertie and her family. Brother-in-law Charles owned and operated a chicken farm. At some point in the 1920s Belle’s mother died. During the 1930 census Belle was living in Corvallis, Benton County, in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with her sister and brother-in-law and 4 of their children.
Belle’s nieces and nephews, Bertie’s children, included: Charles R. (born in 1901 in Kansas), Ruth Leon (about 1904 in Kansas), James T. (about 1907 in Oregon), Esther (about 1911 in Washington), Mary T. ( about 1913 in Washington), John W. (in 1916 in Washington) and Joseph A. (about 1919 in Oregon). Bertie had two other children who died in childhood.
On 12/5/1931 she was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. During the 1940 census Belle was listed among the patients at the state hospital. She continued to live at the institution for over 22 years and she died there of heart problems on 3/24/1954 at the age of 76. She was single her entire life. Sister Bertie died in Clackamas County, Oregon on 4/29/1967 and was buried with her husband in Washington.
