Christina Carpenter was born ca 1799/1800 somewhere in the New River vicinity of Ashe Co, NC.
Christina was apparently with her parents for the 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 census.
She never married, but had a child, apparently out of wedlock, as he took her maiden name (Andrew J. Carpenter born 30 Nov 1817).
In a deed dated 1842? (I haven't seen the original, but I believe this date is wrong, I got it from Danny Miller's work, who noted the same thing about the date probably being wrong), A. J. Carpenter sells land that formerly belonged to his mother "Christena Carpenter, deceased". But she was still living in 1842, so that is why I suspect the date is wrong. In another deed, of the same year, he referred to her as "Christina Watters". This may provide a clue to who Andrew's father was, perhaps a Mr. Waters (or "Watters").
Christina, and her son Andrew, were with her parents for the 1820 and 1830 census. When her parents died in 1835, the heirs made several deeds amongst themselves dividing Mathias' property. Christina was named on all these deeds (dated 21 Oct 1835). (Ashe County, NC Deed Book G page 165).
On 26 Aug 1836, Christina Carpenter sold 20 acres on Big Laurel Fork to James Langley. Her son Andrew Carpenter was a witness to the deed. (Ashe County, NC Deed Book M page 352).
On 30 Sep 1836, Christina Carpenter received a state land grant for 25 acres on the North Fork of New River. (Ashe County, NC Deed Book M page 244).
I did not find Christina on the 1840 census. Her son Andrew was head of household in Ashe County, but he had no one her age residing with him. She may have been residing with one of her siblings. Her oldest sister Franky was in Yancey County, so it doesn't seem likely that she went down there. Her next sibling was Jacob, also in Yancey, neither of whom had an "extra" woman Christina's age with them. The next sibling was Margaret, who was in Ashe in 1840 with husband Jonathan Miller. They had no one with them her age, but their enumerations in 1840 were badly inaccurate, so she could have been there with them. Sister Mary was in Ashe in 1840, but had no one Christina's age. Next was David, who had moved to Indiana by 1840. I doubt she was with him, but I don't have his 1840 enumerations yet to prove it.
Since Andrew J. Carpenter referred to his mother as "Christina Watters" in one record in 1842, it is possible she married, but then why was she a Carpenter again by 1850? (Divorce?). Since "Watters" and "Walters" are hard to distinguish, I'm not sure if the two households in 1840 Ashe were Watters or Walters, but there was a Jacob Walters who had 2 women age 30-39 (born ca 1800/10), and one of those could be Christina.
Christina Carpenter was listed as head of household, and by herself on the 1850 census in Ashe County. She was next door to her sister Margaret Miller. (So perhaps she was with them in 1840 after all?)

BIRTH: Either VA or OH.
Thomas Tanner was born circa 1837, married 1st Sarah Jane Long on 13
May 1860 2nd Emily Phillips 31 March 1865 and is listed as the son of Jesse and
Judy in both marriages. Sarah Jane was the granddaughter of David Daniel and
Nancy (Carpenter) Long and Thomas's first cousin, but once removed.Children of William Tanner, of Jesse Tanner Sr., of Sudna Elizabeth (16)
Carpenter:
This marriage continues the confusion between ""Buffalo" Tanner (RIN 39221)
and "Ike" Tanner (RIN 28455) The orginal record had Thomas in the family of
Buffalo, but the Mowrey book had him in the Ike family. I have continued to
follow the Mowrey book and changed Thomas to that family. The reference is
found on page 98 of the Mowrey book. Then under presure I had to switch him
back.
Sarah Jane Long was born 1843 in Jackson County and married Thomas
Tanner 13 May 1860 in Roane County, Virginia. Thomas was born 1837 in Jackson
County, Virginia and was the son of Jesse and Judith (Carpenter) Tanner
(Please note discrepancy in mother of Thomas Tanner!)
16587. Henry Lawson "Loss" Tanner
Henry was born around 1840, he married Jane Greathouse 29 October 1867.
The Mowrey Book and this orginal record are again in conflict. In the Mowrey
book the following children appear in the Henry Lawson Tanner of Jesse Sr of
Sudna Carpenter. A comparison to this orginal record is also shown:
Mowrey Book
Orginal record
Zedock b: 8 Jan 1872 d: 27 May 1962
Zedock b: abt 1871

Lucretia "Creese"

James A. b: abt 1867
Mary L. b: abt 1869
Emma M. b:abt 1874
It can be seen from these comparisions that the confusion continues, and it is
suspected that it all stems from the confusion between Buffalo and Ike Tanner.
To further confuse the families each of them was married 3 times, and each had
the same wife, Lucinda Raines, as their 3 wife. While I find all of this
confusing, and some of it unlikely, I am reconstructing the genealogy in favor
of the Mowrey book and noting as per the above information as much of the
comparisions as possible. I will leave the final family lines to someone more
qualified.Children of Robert Tanner, of Henry Lawson Tanner, of Jesse and Judith (17)
Carpenter) Tanner as shown in the Mowrey book, page 120 shows that there
should be a Robert Tanner in this family, neither of the orginal or previously
entered data, (from the Mowrey book) indicates this. the children are shown
below.
1.Bessie Tanner was born 10 May 1916 at Creston (Wirt County) and married in
Roane County 2 April 1933 Hallie Earl Shrader, son of Samuel T. and Rosa
Vevie (Hedges) Shrader.
2. Icie Tanner married and divorced Roy Woodring. She was murdered, tied to a
kitchen chair and shot in the head with a paper bag pulled down over her face
at Creston. The crime was never solved. Some say that the killer was a man
named Cambell with whom she had been living. Others speculate that it was a
couple of the Greathouse boys who were always in some kind of serious trouble
with the legal system. Nothing was ever proven in either case.
3. Raymond Clyde Tanner was killed in Germany during World War 2 at
twenty-nine years of age.
Frenchman Tanner was born circa 1883, died after 1969 and married 26
September 1905 Mary E. Boggs.
Minter (19) Carpenter was born around 1869 and married Manda Tanner 14 May
1891 in Roane County. They were the parents of the James F. Carpenter who
married Flora Ann Mowrey on 14 January 1923 in Roane County.
Here is another situation with an individual having two spouses named the John
Carpenter but who have different parents. This Mary Malinda with the same
parents but listed as Mary, in one marriage, married John Carpenter.
Which one is the correct spouse is not known.
One of the Marys may have had for a father one of the two Jesse Tanners in the
file.
Jackson county is now in WV.
NAME: AKA "Dusky".
John A. (17) Carpenter was born 1820-1823, married Mary E. Sharp circa
1850, resided in Jackson County in 1850 and died in Roane County after 1870.
(There is much evidence to suggest that Martha, Joseph and John A. were
actually children of Thomas (17) and Sarah (Wright) Carpenter and that
Stephen and Susan were children of John (16) and Sarah Ratcliff Carpenter.
Research is necessary!)
John (18) Carpenter was born about 1827, married Malinda Tanner 29
February 1844 in Jackson County and resided in Gilmer County in 1850.
Andrew Jackson Tanner was born in December of 1829 and married 29 August 1850
Jane Runnion (born circa 1831, daughter of John and Deborah (Carpenter (17)
Runnion).
Jane Runnion was born about 1831 in Jackson/Roane County and married on 29
August 1850 to Andrew Jackson Tanner (born 1822 and the son of Elijah and
Marian (King) Tanner).
Mary Margaret Tanner was born 1854 and married 25 December 1872 Daniel
Minter Bowers in Roane County.
26195. Roseanne Elizabeth Tanner
"Roseanne E. Tanner was born 1860 in Roane County and married 28 October 1881
J.R. Smith (born 1859 in Harrison County).
Nancy Jane Tanner was born in 1867 and married in Roane County 25 October
Bartly Niday (born in Giles County, Virginia).
