1855 New York State Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Robert O. is one year old, and  in the home of his parents.

1860 U. S. Census, Naples, Ontario County, New York.   Robert (O. Jr.) is age 6 and in the home of his parents.

1865 New York State Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Robert (O. Jr.) is 11 and in the home of his parents.

1870 U. S.Census, Cheshire Twp., Allegan County, Michigan, taken 22 June. Robert is in the home of his sister Martha.   /192 Allen, John,  20,  b. MI; Martha (Carpenter), 18,  b. NY; John, 1/12,  b. MI; Carpenter, Robert, 16, b. NY, works on farm.

MARRIAGE.   Branch County Clerk, Coldwater, MI. Book E, page 240, #242. Married 23 December 1879 at Sherwood, MI, Robert Carpenter 21, b. NY, residing in  Sherwood;  and Sarada Place, age 16, b. NY, residing in Burlington;  officiant:  Manton E. Sawin, JP;  witnesses:  Isaac Sawin and Celenda Sawin of Sherwood. (We think Robert was 25 at the time of his marriage.  The record was checked again in 1999.  It says age 21.)

1880 U.S.Census, Clay Center, Clay, Kansas, Vol 4, Ed 23, Sheet 23, Line 24, taken 1 June.  6/6.   Robert Carpenter age 26, and wife Sarada 16, are in the home of his sister Martha and John Allen. John and Martha have four children at this time.  (See her record).  Robert may have been visiting or helping his family members because he is listed as a laborer.  Seven days later, June 8, he is in his brothers' home, George W. and Olivia Carpenter, household #200/217, in the same town, so Robert and Sarada were enumerated twice on this same census. He is not listed as a laborer, but as a brother and Sarada as a Sister-in-law.  Robert is age 26, Sarada is now age 17. (This is how we learned that Robert Carpenter belonged to the family of Robert and Plexana Carpenter.  The three children, Robert, Martha, and George, were enumerated together on the 1855 and 1865 New York State Census and the 1860 U. S. Naples, Ontario County, NY, Census.)

See 1880 Census for Isaac Place as Martin and LaJune Peckham were in the parents,' Isaac and Catherine Place's, home.  Sarada was married and in Clay Center, Kansas with Robert O. Carpenter, her husband, in 1880.  Apparently they returned to Branch County at least by 1888.

1895 Carpenter Reunion, Athens, Michigan.     A Robert Carpenter, signed in as a relative, when there was a place to sign for visitors.  He attended several reunions of the Calvin L. Carpenter Family in Athens, MI. in the 1890's.  Calvin L. Carpenter and Robert O. Carpenter Sr. were brothers.  In 1895 Robert O. (Jr.) gave his age as 39.  We now know this is Robert O. Jr.  His father, Robert O. Carpenter Sr. was re-married twice in Barry County,  Michigan, and Plexana, his mother, is buried in Cressy Cem. in Prairieville, Barry County, Michigan.  We know several of the family were in this general area.  At this particular reunion, cousins came from many areas, even as far away as New York.

DEATH.  Branch County Clerk, Coldwater, MI.  Book C. p. 241, #5252.  Died 3 May 1922 at Union Twp., Robert O. Carpenter, age 68y4m6d, b. NY, occupation: farmer, father:  Robert Carpenter, birthplace unknown, mother:  Maxine Williams, birthplace unknown, Informant:  Mrs. Carpenter; buried 5 May 1922, Girard Cem., C. S. Bartlett, Undertaker.

On his death certificate Robert's mother's name on the death record is INCORRECT.  Her name was Plexana Wood, NOT Maxine Williams.  Apparently Sarada, his wife, gave the information and she was only 16 when they were married in 1879 and both of Robert  O. Carpenter's parents were dead, Plexana in 1867, Robert O. Sr. in 1871.  Sarada probably only remembered that the mother's name had an "x" in it, and that her husband had the same name as his father.  Unfortunately this caused a delay in locating his ancestors and proving other relationships.  The corrections could be made because Robert and Sarada were found in the home of his brother, George W. Carpenter, in Clay Center, Clay , Kansas on the 1880 U. S. Census.  This was the proof because Robert and Sarada were also in the home of Martha [Carpenter] Allen a few days later on the same census! Robert O. Jr.'s sister, Sarah (Carpenter) Barnes [later married Sanders] was also next door to George.  We know that Rober O. Carpenter Sr. and Plexana had children, Sarah, Martha, George and Robert O. Jr. [and others] and Sarah, Martha, George, and Robert O. Jr. were all there, together on that census.  In George's home he is referred to as a brother!  Sarada as a sister-in-law! In Martha's home he was listed as brother-in-law to the head of the household, John Allen, who was his sister, Martha's, husband.  Robert O. Carpenter Jr. had also been in Martha and John Allen's home in Allegan, MI in 1870, 10 years earlier.  Also Sarah [Carpenter] [Barnes] Sanders attended Carpenter Reunions in NY and in Athens, MI which is a further proof of relationship.  Robert O. Carpenter Jr. also attended the Athens, MI Carpenter reunions.  We hope the death certificate for Robert O. Jr. can [and should] be corrected.)

1860 U. S. Census, Naples, Ontario County, New York, Frances (Jennie) age 3, female, is in the home of her parents, Robert O. and Plexana Carpenter. (Plexana is spelled different ways on different census.)

1865, NY State Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Carpenter, Jennie, age 8, is in the home of her parents.   Thus Frances and Jennie must be the same person as she is listed as Jennie or Jennie P on other census. (Could her name be Jennie Plexana?)

1870 U. S. Census, York Twp., Wastenaw County, MI.  There is a Jennie Carpenter, age 13, in the home of Clark and Nancy (Carpenter) Rogers.   This is believed to be this Jennie because Nancy's brother and Jennie's father, Robert O. Carpenter, Sr. is believed to have gone to Kansas.  (He is son of Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair, but he also has a son Robert.)  Robert and Nancy Rogers are brother and sister.  By 1870 Jennie's mother, Plexana Wood Carpenter is dead (1867), and had been buried in Prairieville Twp., Barry County, Michigan and her father died the next year after this census (1871).  Later she returned to New York because she married Charles Hall and lived in New York.

26888. Lawrence C. Hall

Birth, Bristol Town, Vital Records. b. 4 Mar 1888 at Bristol.  Father: Chas. W., 33; mother: Jennie, 31.

He was 1 yr. old when he died.    Tombstone shows 1872-1888 which would be 16 years old.  Helen Fox of Bristol said she checked and he was a 1 year old.  (Death date of 1888, 21 Dec was from minister's record).  Parents were not married until about 1878 and had another child 1879, so we believe he was not born in 1872 as tombstone suggests.  See below.

17015. Cora Bell Carpenter

BIRTH.  Barry County Clerk,  Courthouse, Hastings, Michigan.  . Liber. A, Page 26, Record #383. Date 17 June 1867, Cora Bell Carpenter, female, b. Prairieville.  Parents: Robert O. Carpenter and Melissa Carpenter of Hope, MI. Father b. NY, Mother PA. Date recorded June 15, 1868.

1870 U. S.Census, Hope Twp., Barry County, Michigan.   Cora was 2 years old and in the home of David and Mary Bailey.  70/71  Bailey, David, 49, b. NY; Mary A., 35, b. NY; Booth, Ella R., 12, b. NY; Carpenter, Cora M., 2, b. NY.  The Bailey's were witnesses to Robert and Melissa's wedding in 1866.  Cora's mother, Melissa, died 9 Feb 1868 , and her father remarried.  His new wife, Emily Hallet,  filed for a divorce which was never granted as Robert O. Carpenter died a year later.  We have not found a relationship for the Bailey's but it is likely there was one, as they are buried next to Cora's mother Melissa in the Cedar Cem. in Hope, MI. Descendants of Cora has stated Cora was raised "by an Aunt".  Mary Bailey died a few years after Melissa, perhaps they were sisters.

1880 U. S.Census, Hope, Barry County, MI.   Cora is not in the home of David Bailey.

1884 Michigan State Census, Hope, Barry County.   Cora is in the home of David Bailey.  #193/200, film 915281 viewed at the Salt Lake City, Utah  Family History Center.    Bailey, David, 63, b. Parents b. NY, and two boarders.

MARRIAGE.  Calhoun County Clerk, Michigan,  Book 3, page 3, William H. McGoreon/Govern, age 21, and Cora B. Carpenter, age 16, were married in Morengo, on Jan 21, 1885.  This may not be  the same Cora, as "our" Cora would be 17 or 18, but errors are made in recording, so it should be checked further.  Witnesses were Charles Smith and Charles Mead both of Marshall.

David Bailey left money to Cora M. Vandenberg in his Will dated, 27 December 1898, and named his executor on 2 Feb. 1899 in Hope, Barry, MI.

On 8th day of Jan 1940 the last mentioned land is paid for and Cora M. Vandenburg signs as William is deceased.  She appeared on 8 Jan 1940, so William died before that time.

17017. Amelia Adaladi Rogers

1850 U.S.Census, Tuscola, Livingston, MI, Film 443572, Adaladi (spelling on census) was 2 yrs. old and with her parents, Anthony and Margaret Carpenter Rogers.  She was Margaret Carpenter Roger's second daughter.

1860 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, Film 083536, household 139/123, Adaline (spelling on census) was age 13.

Barry  Marriage Records.  Amelia A. (Adaladi) Rogers and Albert B. Chapman (name really Adelbert) were married in Prairieville 4 Feb 1865. She is listed as the dau of Anthony Rogers.  Witness was Seth H. Chapman & Bowena (Rowena) F. Rogers of Prairieville. (We have a picture of this certificate.)

1870 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI. Film 552160.   203207 Chapman, Adaladi, 24, b. NY;  Hattie age 4.  Her husband Adelbert Chapman is in the home of her 1/2 sister Henrietta Rogers Wilson and her husband David R. Wilson, as a laborer.  It was on this census where it was hard to read "Albert."  Now we know his name was Adelbert, it is easily read.

The 1880 MI census has been searched several times, but neither Adelbert, his brother Seth (who was a witness at their wedding) or their father Issac has been found, but they were all on the 1870 census in the Prairieville area.  (Adelbert's mother is buried in the Brown Cemetery in Orangeville, Barry, MI.  "Martha Rogers, wife of I.P. d. 10 Mar 1883, 62 yrs.)  Adelbert's brother, John, was buried in the Brown Cem. by his mother.  It said the father was in Kansas.

1896 Barry , State of Michigan, Rowena Porter filed papers as Anthony Rogers' daughter  (Rowena Rogers Porter) for part of the Real Estate Property after her father, Anthony Roger's, death.  On these Probate Records the land was to be divided between Henrietta Wilson 56 yrs. old of Plainwell, Mich., Martha E. New 59 yrs. old of Belle Air, Mich; Josephine Markham 53, of Battle Creek, Mich; Hattie Chapman 29 yrs. old (daughter of Amelia Adalaide Rogers Chapman who obviously is dead by 1996), of Norton  Kansas; and Rowena Porter 49 yrs. of Prairieville, Mich.

Hattie's marriage was found in Norton Kansas in 1886.  She married John Ruth, see her notes.  We are now looking for her children.

Adelbert B. Chapman

1850 U.S. Census, Gorham, Ontario, NY. Adelbert is with his family and is listed as age 6.  His brother Seth is age 4 and brother John is 3/4 of a month.  His father is Issac and mother Martha.

Marriage Records of Barry , MI. Book B-50 Film 100839(?).   Adelbert and Amelia A. were married in the home of Anthony Rogers on 4 Feb 1865.  Adelbert's name on that license was Albert which is incorrect. His brother Seth Chapman was one of the witnesses to the marriage. Amelia's half-sister Henrietta was the other. Albert (Adelbert) was age 21, Amelia Adaladi was 18 yrs. old at the time of their marriage.

1870 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI. Film  552160, Household 203/207 Adelbert's wife Adaladi is listed as head of the household, age 24 with Hattie age 4, because Adelbert is enumerated in the home of his sister-in-law, Henrietta Wilson (Adaladi's half/sister) and brother-in-law David Wilson.  He was a farm laborer in their home, and is age 26. Charlotte Porter age 17, domestic servant, is in the home, also Mandame Willson, age 40, female. (Mandame died in 1871.)

Nathan Carpenter, (Uncle to Amelia Adaladi) the son of Robert and Phebe McNair Carpenter, and sister to Margaret, Phebe, Calvin, Robert and others, is living close, listed as Nathan, and his wife is Almira. (See his record.)

Seth Chapman, Adelbert's brother, is on the 1870 census in Prairieville also, age 20 (should have been 24 as he was 4 in 1850), with wife Alice B. b. MI age 19, (Alice is probably older too with a child already 3) with Burton age 3, and Lewis age 3/12.  Adelbert's father, I.P. (Isaac age 30 in 1850) is age 52, Martha age 48 (was 20 in 1850  in Gorham, Ontario, NY), son John 3/12 in 1850 is now 20, and another son Frank is 12.  They are all in Prairieville.

After 1870, Adelbert and Amelia cannot be found in Mich.  They are not on the 1880 census of Michigan Soundex, and his father and brother Seth are not either (Searched again in 1992).  Many of the 1880 Soundex Census of states around were also searched, but at that time his name was thought to be Albert, when it was really Adelbert, so they will be searched again.  It is believed that the Chapman family probably moved from the state. However, Adelbert's mother Martha, wife of I.P. is buried in the Brown Cem., Orangeville, Barry, MI. She died 10 Mar 1883, 62 years."

It is important to locate this family because if Hattie grew up, married and had children, that might be Margaret Carpenter Roger's only posterity due to the fact that Rowena had no children, and Samuel obviously didn't either because he died at age 11.  Adaladi may have had other children.

Marriage Records, Republic County Kansas.  Adelbert B. Chapman of Wayne, Kansas age 51 and Clara A. Shepard of Wayne Kansas age 41 married 22 Jan 1806, at Wayne, Republic  Kansas  Married by: E. A. Brunir, Minister of the Gospel.  Attest:  John A. Jacobs.

1896 Barry , State of Michigan, Rowena Porter filed papers as Anthony Rogers' daughter  (Rowena Rogers Porter) for part of the Real Estate property after her father's death.  On these Probate Records the land was to be divided between Henrietta Wilson, 56 yrs. old, of Plainwell, Mich.; Martha E. New, 59 yrs. old,of Belle Air, Mich; Josephine Markham, 53, of Battle Creek, Mich; Hattie Chapman, 29 yrs. old, (daughter of Amelia Adalaide Rogers Chapman who obviously is dead before 1896), of Norton  Kansas; and Rowena Porter, 49 yrs. old,  of Prairieville, Mich.

From a researcher in Norton  Kansas, "John Ruth, West Union Twp. age 25, Father James, b. Illinois. First marriage, Hattie Chapman age 21, parents Adelfert (should be Adelbert) Chapman, Mother, Amelia Rogers." The researcher didn't find Hattie in Norton County Census, and looked again in West Union for Ruth 1885 & 1895, not listed. We are now searching for her children if there were any. Soundex for Kansas, 1900, 1910, and 1920.  Nothing  was found.

17019. James Edgar Rogers

On the 1850, 1860, 1870 U.S. Census, James gives his birthplace as NY.

Clark, Nancy and Edgar show birthplaces of NY, but Mary and the rest were born in Michigan.  This would mean that Clark and Nancy were in Michigan between 1837 and 1839. Cem. visit; Oakwood Cem., Saline, Washtenaw, Mich. Dates were copied from tombstone, in 1982. Also in 1994 we obtained a copy of the Oakwood Cem. burials and county records of burials.  Mary was 73y 7mo 23 days at time of death.

There was a letter to Mrs. Snyder from Helen who had received it from Mrs. Merritt Martin of Saline who knew this family.  We had Peter F. Kanouse, and she gave us Peter Fred Kanouse.

Walter Kanouse

1850 U.S.Census, York Twp., Washtenaw, there were other Kanouse that were probably related.   Page 983, Kanouse, Otis 25 Male, Orvilla 18 Female, also John 43 male; Ellen 52 female with children Elizabeth Ann 14, William 30 b. NY and Melvina 22 female.  (We now, 1944,  have the name of Peter for Walter's father, and Sally Cook for his mother.)

Saline Observer, Thurs. Nov 1, 1928, ". . . Walter Kanouse, 88 years of age died in the home of his son, C. D. Kanouse in Detroit Monday afternoon, Oct 29. Deceased leave two sons, C. D. and Oscar, both of Detroit.   He was born in York Twp. and lived in Saline and vicinity until eight years ago, when he went to Detroit. . ."

In the Oakwood Cem., Saline, Mich. where Walter is buried, is a John Kanouse 1797-1889 and Eleanore 1777-1878.  Apparently these are two that were on that 1850 census.  There are no other Kanouse in the Cem. except Walter and Mary's family.  Frederick (Fred) 1856- bur 9 Oct1922 may be a brother, as he is on the same lot, also Clara B. 1867-bur. 7 July 1944 is his son's, Fred's, wife. (This might be a typo as his son Fred was born in 1865 & maybe this is Fred his son, not brother and the years were transposed).  Clara Oregan 1884-1947 is also buried on that lot with Walter and Mary.

On one note it said Walter Kanouse's father was Fred of Pittsfield, MI, formerly of  NY.

According to the 1850 & 1860 census, Spencer was probably only 23 when married.

Carpenter, Spencer's mother's (Nancy Carpenter Rogers') brother.  In 1994 we obtained a copy of the Oakwood Cem. burials and county records of burials.

Anna C. Jackson

Elwood Rogers, Spencer and Anna's son, was counted in the home of William Jackson age 62 and Mary A. 69 on the 1894 State Census, in the Villiage of Saline.  So was a cousin, Donaner (or Dorence) Kanouse age 21, Mary Roger Kanouse's son.   Charles Jackson and Clarisse Owens have been given as Anna's parents, so William and Mary A. Jackson are probably relatives for two cousins to be enumerated in the 1894 census in their home.  Anna had an older brother William.

Washtenaw Death Records: 1867 - 1913, Vol 3, page 4. Anna was 55 yrs 3mo 12 days. Parents were given as Charles Jackson and Clarisy Owen. (Newspaper article in the Saline Observer said she died Feb 27 (Wed.) 1901.)
