Anoka County has the death record for Goodale, I have ordered it.  He died 21 April 1871.  I have a request in at the Anoka Historical Society for his daughter Ida.
The Methodist Church in Anoka may have something on Ida also as Eliza Carpenter was received and baptized their in 1871.
I have attached a copy of Goodale's headstone.
This is all I have found so far.

In a message dated 7/8/2007 2:55:56 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, LMA@stx.rr.com writes:
Good Afternoon John,

I have recently became aware of the marriage of Goodale Carpenter, possible son of John and Sarah (Smith) Carpenter.  I found a note on roots web site for a Don Ryan which stated that Goodale Carpenter was married in Anoka, Minnesota.  His stated source was: "Title: Reproduced on Broderbund Software's Family Archive CD #117
Author: Amos B. Carpenter,Publisher: Press of Carpenter & Morehouse, Amherst, Mass., 1898"
Text: Married in Anoka, Minn.

During my hunt to find the burial location of my great grand mother, Eliza W. (Prouty) Smith I requested a copy of the "Lot" record for her parents Hiram and Sarah Prouty, thinking I might find her there, but instead I found the burial location of her first husband Goodale Carpenter.  This lot information does not give his date of death, but it had to be before 1872, because that is when Eliza W. Carpenter married Jesse Blunt Smith.  Eliza W. Prouty born 30 July 1845 died 4 March 1891.

I also only learned recently of her marriage to someone with the last name of Carpenter.  I received a copy of her marriage certificate from Anoka County, Minnesota that listed her as Mrs. Eliza W. Carpenter.

So I contacted the Anoka County Cemetery people and they lot me they could e-mail lot records to me for my great grand-father Jesse Smith, and my great great grandparents Hiram and Sarah Prouty.  I always assumed that Eliza was never married before Jesse, but that was wrong.  To add to the confussion, I also believed that she was buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Anoka, but after receiving a copy of the lot records, I found that they is only a marker for her.

Her parents are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Anoka, Minnesota, so I requested a copy of the lot record for them, and found that she was listed as the person who bought the lot (Eliza Carpenter)  and in the #4 plot is buried Goodale Carpenter. (not date of death attached) I have requested but not received yet his burial records.

My question for you is, do you have any information on a Goodale Carpenter, born in York Co., Maine?

I hope I didn't ramble on too much

Thanks
Marilyn O'Donnell

Notes for John Carpenter:
Family tradition passed down by Karl H. Carpenter, son of John Henry Carpenter,
states that John Carpenter left the family farm in Canada when he was 14 with a
horse and five dollars.  Gramp Karl thought it was Ontario or Alberta, but he
wasn't sure.  John went to sea and settled in Trenton, Hancock Co., Maine.
This story has been passed down.
Earliest record found so far of John is in the 1850 census.  He's listed in
Trenton, Maine, a farmer in the household of Priscilla Higgins, age 50.  Also
listed is John Harding, age 36.  In this census, John lists Maine as his
birthplace.

brother Byron gives father as born in Maine.  Both brothers are living in
Trenton, Maine.

Great post, John. I didn't want to post this reply on the two web sites, since it is so specific and wordy, but feel free to post it or an edited version for others to read who might want to know about this line of Carpenter. As a result of this search, I was able to find a gravestone photo, that I hadn't seen before. From familysearch.org, I was sent to the one below. I have contacted the submitter, to see how it was determined that this marker was for my g-g-grandfather, John Carpenter, b. 3March1825 in St. Sylvestre, Quebec, Canada. I have lots of info on this line of Carpenters from Somersworth, NH, and after Rev. War, in N. Waterboro, Maine. The missing info is why my g-g-grandfather, John Carpenter of St. Sylvestre, Quebec, Canada, disappeared from all records , until surfacing in Trenton, Maine in 1850. DNA evidence now links us with this John Carpenter, and family tradition (some stories handed down). Also records in St. Sylvestre, tells us a lot about the dysfunctional family headed by Nicholas Carpenter, John's father. I have collected quite a bit about John's siblings and their descendants, who by my records, left Canada and settled in Indiana, Michigan, and Oregon. I have met with several descendant families, and none of them had any information about the family of Nicholas Carpenter, b. abt 1799 in N. Waterboro, Maine. who went to Canada with the King family, his inlaws, sometime after 1821. Thanks again for the refresher on the Mormon church records! Have a happy Easter!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irlande
Irlande is a municipality in Les Appalaches Regional County Municipality in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, Canada. Its population was 959 as of the Canada 2011 Census.
Irlande does not have a town or village centre, but the hamlet of Maple Grove, at the intersection of Chemins Craig and Gosford, constitutes the only notable urban agglomeration. This is where the Holy Trinity Anglican Church and the rectory are located.
The township of Ireland was first colonized by Irish settlers, who called the area "New Ireland." The municipality kept the English spelling until 1987, when it took the French "Irlande." "Irlande" is the French name for Ireland.

" Freeman's wife and two sons were found in the US 1880 Census living with his daughter's family."
I am inclined to believe that this Lucinda is not the same one as Freeman's wife, Lucinda Orr or if it is, then there was a real story about how these children came to be.

This is possible that about that time, she and he split where he went to Marlette MI as ABC reported (likely from Dimon and his wife Nancy, I believe)
This family had, by written account and some of my speculation, some very dysfunctional members.  Nicholas the father and Freeman.  I have reasons to believe this too lengthy to write here but I believe the fact that all the sons moved away from the family as soon as they could and none of the descendants knew much if anything about their roots, and if I am correct two of them disappear from the family completely (John and Orin), as well as avoid any responsibility to take care of the mother seems to indicate a lack of family unity.
For Freeman, what is not explained is how his supposed children were omitted from the censuses of 1861, 1871 and 1881 while Freeman and Lucinda were accounted for. The census of  1871 of  Lotbiniere county is the most telling as  by this time, there should have been children listed, since he was married in 1858.  Only Freeman, Lucinda and Sara (Sally King) Carpenter are listed.  What is also highly unusual is the fact that Nicholas Carpenter's wife continually referred to herself as Sally King, not Sally Carpenter.  The fact that she took Freeman to court to sue him for the support he was supposed to give her after the other sons and daughter gave all responsibility to him by quit claim.  I have photo copies of all the docs that outline the above. Well, I said too lengthy to go into, so I better stop here.

OK, I dug out some old records from my visit to the Canadian Archives in 2001
Yes, I have that microfilm image of Lotbiniere 1881also  but....
I took the T to be an F and that Freeman was misspelled by the census taker and written as Fremain.  It sure looks like an F to me as I am looking at it.
Since he is married to Lucinda, and the ages are consistent with the previous censuses, given that census takers were not exactly precise are the same I think he was living in St. Sylvestre in 1881
There were never any children listed with Freeman and Lucinda in the Lotbiniere censuses I have
1851 Freeman single age 17
1861 Freeman married to Lucinda age 28 it would seem and his age listed as some number unreadable other than 28
1871 Freeman age 36 married to Lucinda (Orr) age 39 with Mother also in the home
1881 Fremain age 47 Lucinda age 49
1891 Freeman's sister Lydia (Carpenter) Lee living there but there was no evidence of Freeman or Lucinda
1901 Lees still there and I attach a photo of Lydia and William Lee
so....
hmmm.  I can't explain the reference you made below to a Lucinda Carpenter living with her daughter Clara (Carpenter) Gilmore
I am inclined to believe that this Lucinda Carpenter is not the same as the wife of Freeman Carpenter.   First, her mother and father's birthplace if given accurately, would likely not have been NY and PA, as the parents of these families came from Ireland, England or Maine/Mass.  Her age is inconsistent with Freeman's wife and her child was born 2 years before she was married.
More digging is required for this one.  I also am sure that in his old age, Freeman moved from Marlette, MI down to Dayton, IN to live with Nicholas Alexander Lee who moved there from St. Sylvestre.  I have photo copies of some letters that were written regarding the death of Dimon in Fort Wayne to Freeman in Dayton, IN. in 1912
Hey, thanks for digging around on this!
Best regards,
| Jerry Carpenter
