Avis Tillinghast

She died in Newport per the GAZETTE of Oct. 7, 1774 in her 82nd year.
She was probably a great grand daughter of Rev. Pardon Tillinghast.
In 1794 Anne Mott, daughter of James and Mary (Underhill) Mott, visited the
"Widow Carpenter" and her two daughters.  Later Anne Mott refers to her as
"Aunt Carpenter."  (Adam and Anne Mott Genealogy)

3284. Pardon Carpenter

Number 160a in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H.
Carpenter, 1901.

3285. Mary Carpenter

Number 161 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H.
Carpenter, 1901.

3286. Martha Carpenter

Number 161a in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H.

Carpenter, 1901.

3289. Francis W. Carpenter

Carpenter, 1901.

1253. Thomas Carpenter Jr.

Number 60 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H.
Carpenter, 1901.
Thomas Carpenter, this Thomas's son is not listed in the above record.  Does he
belong in another family?  Maybe his son Joseph's son?

He was a Patriot and a private in a New York unit, D.A.R. Patriot Index, a
Farmer and Friends Member at Rye, New York.
It is probable he married twice.  See wife's notes.

In 1739, Thomas Carpenter bought several tracts of land in the lower part of
"Harrison's Purchase," in Westchester County, in which deeds he lists himself
as being "Thomas, Jr., "late of the i'sl of Nassau, now of Rye."
In 1743 (12,8,1743) charges were made against him by the Meeting "for some
unbecoming expressions."  He denied them and several months later they were
dismissed as "not proven." (Purchase Minutes)

WILL: Will dated 5 Oct. 1775 and proven 24 Aug. 1784.

BIRTH:
Thomas was born on 25 6th month [August (not June)] 1710 (family record in Frost, Haviland Genealogy [1914], 186). The D. H. Carpenter volume consistently expresses pre-1752 Quaker records’ numbered months as named ones as though the first month of the year were January rather than March. NOTE: Chances are you’ve got a lot of dates taken from that genealogy that are two months off.

On Nov. 26, 1753, Stephen Carpenter posted bond with Petter Ferris of East

He was a farmer at Harrisons, Westchester county, NY.
!He was a Quaker and a Patriot.  He served America in the Revolutionary War
as he defended himself against Loyalists and warned people of the advance of
Gen. Howe and his British troops.   He was a preacher of that society.
His farm was nearly ruined during the Revolutionary War, as it was so situated
as to be alternately occupied by both armies.
As a Friend, he could take no active part in the fighting.  At the Battle of
White Plains, a skirmish took place in a rye field near his house, the wounded
being cared for there.  He and possibly his family helping the wounded.
This time the Americans occupied his farm and were quartered there.
He was taken sick with "camp fever" and died 21 May 1778.
