HISTORY OF MOWER COUNTY, 1911.
John F. Cook, one of the early real estate dealers of Austin, was born in Malone, N. Y., May 13, 1823, son of the Rev. Stephen Cook, a clergyman in the Empire state in the period following the Revolution, and first pastor of the Congregational church at Austin.
John F. was twelve years of age when his parents removed from Malone, and with them he subsequently lived in various places in his native state.
As a young man he was engaged in various occupations, working for a time at Clintonville, N. Y., and later at Peru, N. Y., where he began his career as an office boy in a large retail store, and rapidly advanced till he became an equal partner in the business.
Subsequently he went to Iowa, and during the construction of the Illinois Central through that state was engaged in railroading and in the mercantile business, being located at Waterloo and subsequently at Independence.
Mr. Cook came first to Austin in 1854, but did not remain. He returned in 1856 and purchased land around Austin, and owned an undivided one-fourth interest in the original town site. He remained here about two years, retaining his interest in a number of mercantile establishments in Iowa. He sold his interests there and returned to Austin in 1864, taking up the real estate business.
He was Austin's mayor in 1870 and again in 1874. He was an active business man and a public-spirited citizen.
He died at his home in Austin, December 2, 1892.
The subject of this sketch married Addie E. Carpenter, and to this union three children were born: Charles F., Addie and John F.

I found my paper notes on Charles L. Carpenter -- he was definitely a son of Joseph Brown Carpenter, I found a verified lineage in the DAR records that has credible documentation. And Carl Adolph Carpenter joined the SAR on the same line.  Terry

Lewis W. Griffith Dead - Soldier of the Civil War and Old Resident of Hamilton

Civil War Veteran Answers Last Call
In the death of Captain Lewis W Griffith on Jan. 25, 1918, there passed away a brave and gallant soldier and a citizen of Steuben County whose life was a long exemplification of civic virtue and fidelity to duty.
Lewis W Griffith was born 17, Jun, 1838 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and came with his parents to Steuben County, Indiana in 1848. He parted this life 25 Jan 1918, aged 79 Y 7 M and 8 D. He was united in holy bonds of matrimony 1 Sep 1861 to Miss Bettie Carpenter of Otsego Center.
Leaving his bride of a few days with her parents, Rev and Mrs. Harlow Carpenter, he marched away to do service for Uncle Sam in the Civil War. He served well and valiantly and was promoted to Captain of Company A 44th Indiana Volunteers: his army service has caused permanent disability.
After peace was established he settled in Otsego Township and engaged in agriculture pursuits and the buying and shipping of livestock. In 1868 he was elected Assessor, an office he has since acceptable filled. He has served 4 years as Deputy County Auditor and had a long official record of about 25 years.
About twenty years ago he located in Hamilton where he has endeared himself to all who came in contact with him. Lewis was always the first to go to the relief of the sick and distressed, looking after the wants of the widow and orphan. He was a staunch Republican and was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Hamilton.
He died at his home in the west part of town after a couple of days illness from heart trouble. No person of this vicinity was more solicitous of the sick of the community than was Mr. Griffith. He has been a resident of this township for more than 50 years and knew and was known by everybody in the township. He was prominent in political and fraternal circles, being an honored and valued member of Grand Army of the Republic where he was at one time, commander, the IOOF, Encampment, Daughters of Rebekah, being District Deputy Grand Master at the time of decease, and a member of the Masonic order.
Mr. and Mrs. Griffith celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on Sept. 1, 1911 having lived an ideal happily married life for 58 years, 4 months and 24 days. The bereaved wife, eight children and 18 grandchildren, with hosts of friends mourn his departure.
Funeral services held from the M E Church at 2 o'clock on 30 Jan 1918 conducted by Rev J O Campbell, assisted by Rev B. F. Hornaday and the Orders to which he belonged. Interment was in the Hamilton cemetery, section EO, lot 169.

Benjamin Franklin Griffith

GRAVE:

Benjamin Franklin "B. F. or Frank" Griffith
Birth:  May 16, 1846
Tuscarawas County
Ohio, USA
Death:  Dec. 14, 1925
Otsego Center
Steuben County
Indiana, USA
Benjamin was serving his second term as Township Trustee, being one of the most efficient officers the township has ever had. Under the trusteeship of B. F. Griffith, the people of Hamilton and Otsego Township are justly proud of their school. He is also a member of Baron Steuben Post 387 GAR. Benjamin was a farmer with land close to Cold Springs road in Steuben County Indiana.
At the close of the war, he came home and took up the management of the old home farm and the care of his widowed mother. Rev J. W. Paschal of the Methodist church baptized B. F. in 1878. During these past years he served well in official capacity as well as in attendance. Twenty-five years ago, on account of failing health, he returned from his farm and moved to Hamilton where he had since resided.
He leaves to mourn his going, a faithful wife who has been his help mate for 57 years and who has devoted her whole time to his care for the past thirteen years. He was a staunch republican. B. F. had been in poor health for a long time but seemed to be about as usual on Sunday. He was taken suddenly worse about 4:00 pm and became unconscious from which he failed to rally, dying about 5:00 am Monday.
Services for B. F. were in Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev I. W. Carnes officiating with burial in Hamilton Cemetery. Some of the out of town friends and relatives to attend the funeral of B. F. on Wednesday afternoon were: Harry Brown & wife, Hiram Doty & wife, Mrs. A McClish, George Wisel & wife, Mrs. Carrie Brown, Frank Farley, Eugene Greenword & wife, Mrs. U. E. McKee, Charles Griffith & wife, Mrs. Anna Lemon, John Renner of Angola, C. M. Brown & wife, Miss Allie Truesdale, C. E. Reed & wife, Lee Griffith & wife, Loren Griffith from Elkhart, Mrs. Edna Zimmerman & Mrs. Jessie Hammond of Detroit. Seven old soldiers of the Civil War attended the funeral and they gave their work at the church.

17335. Jerome Bonaparte "Byron" Carpenter

From Andrew Stevenson's Family Histories I: "Mary Carpenter Hardin
speaks of her father growing up in Syracuse, NY and Salina, which had
continued as independent until 1847, then did become the first Ward of
Syracuse.  She speaks also of him as a boy "of driving on the Erie
Canal, when the boats were drawn by horses."  (This may have been the
Oswego Canal which went through Salina in 1827).  He was only 13 or so
when his widowed mother moved to DeKalb County, Illinois to a farm
next to her brother Wells A. Fay.  In 1852 he moved to a nearby farm
upon his marriage, and here Wilbur, Mary and Ellsworth were born.  MCH
says he then moved (from the farm in Squaw Grove township) across to
"Freeland Corners", a very small village (which is in Somonauk twp.)
and here Millie (Amelia) was born.  He then moved back to the farm.
It will be noted on the map that the farm of Samuel H. Lay, Josepha's
father, is about the same distance southeast of Freeland as the
carpenter and Wells farms are northwest."
"Mary Carpenter Hardin says the family moved to State Center, Iowa
in March 1868 (via the C&NW Ry at Cortland, Illinois. To the north of
them in DeKalb County) where his brothers already had established a
store.  She says this was owned then by the four Carpenter brothers
and Josepha's brother-in-law, Horatio Brayton, Nettie's husband.  He
also had an interest, with his brothers, in a grain elevator.  As the
1860 Daniel Lamb map of DeKalb County shows he had acquired some 360
acres of land, it is easy to see how Nettie Sanford in writing of
State Center in Marshall County could say: "Then came the Carpenters,
men of capital and enterprise, from Sandwich, Illinois."
"Apparently the 1873 depression, with its disastrous effects on
farm values and prices, pretty well wiped him out (Mary Carpenter
Hardin says he finally paid off his debts in full at the time she was
married in December 1880)."
"The Archives combined compilation of Civil War Military Records
gives him residing in Sandwich, enlisted 28 July, 1861, mustered in 28
Aug., discharged 13 Feb. 1862, 2nd Lieut., 10th Ill. Infantry. (During
this period the 10th Inf. Was on guard duty, Mound City, Ill., by Jan.
moved with Grant's forces to Bird's Point, Mo.)"
The 1860 Census shows Jerome and Josepha living in the Town of
Freeland, Squaw Grove Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois with four
children and working as a farmer.  The 1870 Census shows Jerome living
in State Center, Iowa with his wife Josepha and seven children and an
occupation of Dry Goods Merchant.  The 1880 Census shows Jerome living
in State Center, Iowa with his wife Josepha and three children and an
occupation of Live Stock Dealer.
Minnie Adams Houston remembers that her Uncle Jerome lived almost
all of his life at State Center, Iowa.

17336. Thaddeus B. Carpenter

(Burr Oak Cemetery)

From Andrew Stevenson's Family Histories I:  "Thaddeus would have
been a boy of around 8 when his widowed mother moved to Squaw Grove,
Illinois.  The Western Historical History of Marshall County, Iowa
says: "In the Fall of 1864, T.B. Carpenter came and about the same
time, A.N. Woolston, J.W. Dobbins of Sandwich, and V.J. Shipman,
Orleans Co., NY came to State Center in January 1865 and erected a
one-story frame building and put in groceries and boots and shoes.
The Carpenter Brothers erected a store in May and put in a stock of
goods …"  Apparently, then, Thaddeus was the first to move to State
Center, Wallace and Byron followed shortly, and Jerome not until
1868."
"The Western History continues:  "The family of T.B. Carpenter
occupied a back room of the same building until such time as a
suitable dwelling could be prepared.  On the 27th of June 1865, there
came a terrible thunderstorm from the west, accompanied with a fearful
wind (i.e. a tornado).  Mr. Carpenter's family felt the house shake as
if it was in the hands of some monster and then came a crash.  The
whole building had fallen inward, one of the timbers striking a little
girl with such force that she died the next day.  The cooking stove in
falling over burned the baby, May, and she, too, came near dying.  The
air was filled with dust; boards and heavy timbers were tossed about
and wagons were lifted up and carried long distances.  But
notwithstanding this calamity. The carpenters rebuild their store,
which building is still standing (in 1878) and got a new stock of
goods."
The 1850 Census shows Thaddeus living with his Uncle Horace Fay and
his brother Henry in Squaw Grove Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois
employed as farmers.  The 1860 Census shows him in the old town of
Beulah, Victor Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois with his wife Mary J.
and one daughter and working as a farmer.  The 1870 Census shows
Thaddeus living in State Center, Iowa with his wife Mary J., four
children and an occupation of Dry Goods Merchant.  The 1880 Census
shows him living in Burr Oak, Kansas with a new wife Catherine, four
children and an occupation of Merchant.  The 1900 Census shows
Thaddeus living in Clinton, Henry Co., Missouri with his wife
Catherine and an occupation of Coal Dealer; Catherine is listed as a
Milliner.
William G. Cutler's "History of the State of Kansas" speaks about
the town of Burr Oak, Kansas:  "The place was organized as a city of
the third class in April, 1880.  It now has a population of 700.  The
first city officers were:  J. K. McLain, Mayor;  W. M. Spurlock,
Clerk;  A. W. Mann, Treasurer;  T. B. Carpenter,  O. F. Roberts,  A.
J. Godfrey,  George Quigley and Dr. J. E. Hawley, Councilmen."  "The
town was laid out in 1875 by A. J. Godfrey on the northwest quarter of
the northwest quarter of Section 23, Township 2 south, Range 9 west,
being a part of his homestead.  The first store was that of J. E.
Faidley, the second F. Gilbert, and the third T. B. Carpenter."
Thaddeus B. Carpenter served in the Kansas State Senate in 1877 and
1879 as a Republican from Jewell County, District 34.

17337. Wallace Fay Carpenter

Wallace went to Iowa abt 1865 plus or minus then was in Chicago circa 1880 then in Omaha circa 1890.
Belle is listed as a widow in 1910.

The family story was that Wallace was in the cattle business with
Byron in Montana (?) in the "Little Rosebud River" country.  Minnie
Adams Houston remembers him as very good looking, tall and dark and
dignified.  He told her of the rapid development of the great west,
that years before, he had crossed from the Missouri River to the
Pacific coast and in that journey had never seen a white face except
at a Fort in Utah where there were soldiers.  She indicates that he
was a "49er" and went to California in the early days for gold.  While
the Montana story may be true, it is evident that both Wallace and
Byron wound up in the cattle business and relatively close to each
other in both Iowa and Nebraska with Wallace spending some time in
between in Chicago.
The 1860 Census shows Wallace living with his brother Byron in the
old town of Beulah, Squaw Grove Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois
employed as farm laborers.  The 1870 Census shows Wallace living in
State Center, Iowa with his wife Belle and three children with an
occupation of Buying Stock.  The 1880 Census shows Wallace living in
Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois with his wife and three children with his
occupation is listed as Commission Manager.  The 1900 Census shows
Wallace living in Omaha City, Douglas Co., Nebraska with his wife
Belle, one child and his occupation is listed as Stock Raiser.

27273. Jessie Carpenter

Jessie is listed in the 1910 Census as single and living with her
mother in Chicago and her occupation is listed as a Private Family
Physician.

17338. Henry E. Carpenter Jr.

(Ida is a widow in 1930)

Minnie Adams Houston recalls that Uncle Henry lived in Sandwich
part of his life.  He was full of fun.  "Droll would be the word to
describe him. He worked in the factory and never had much of this
world's goods, although he was comfortable." Henry served with the
Union Army in the Civil War with Company H of the 105th Regiment of
the Illinois Infantry and is listed as being from Squaw Grove,
Illinois.
The 1850 Census shows him living with his Uncle Horace Fay and
brother Thaddeus in Squaw Grove Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois
employed as farmers.  The 1870 Census shows him living in Somonauk,
DeKalb Co., Illinois with his wife Mary and three children with his
occupation is listed as a Machinist.  The 1880 Census shows him in
Arcadia, Carroll Co., Iowa with wife Mary, three children and his
occupation is listed as a Stock Dealer.  Henry's biography in the 1887
History of Carroll-Greene Co., Iowa indicates that he was living with
his wife and son in Arcadia, Iowa.  By 1895, they were either visiting
or had actually moved to Cleveland, Ohio, perhaps to live near their
daughter Lillian and his wife Mary died there in September 1895.  The
1900 Census shows Henry living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio with
his daughter Lillian and Byron Yant with an occupation of Carriage
Salesman.  The 1910 Census shows him in Perry Township, Lake Co., Iowa
with his second wife Ida and an occupation of "own income".  The 1920
Census shows him in Perry Township, Lake Co., Ohio with his wife Ida
and his occupation is listed as General Farmer.  In 1930 Ida is listed
in Lake Co., Ohio as a widow.
The book "The Carroll-Greene County History, 1887" contains the
following biography for Henry Carpenter, Jr.:  "Henry Carpenter,
hardware dealer, Arcadia, Iowa, is the oldest business man of the
place.  He located in the village June 8, 1872, and erected a business
house, the first one in the town, that season, and engaged in general
merchandising.  He continued in business until 1875, when he sold out
and engaged in farming and stock-buying.  From September 18, 1881,
until October, 1885, he was postmaster at Arcadia, and since that time
has been in the hardware business. He has been a notary public since
1872, school treasurer a number of years, and also township trustee.
In politics he is a Republican.  In August, 1862, he enlisted in the
defense of his country, and was assigned to Company H, One Hundred and
Fifth Illinois Infantry, and served three years, engaged the most of
the time in guerrilla fighting.  His regiment was with Sherman to the
sea, but at that time Mr. Carpenter was on detached duty at Nashville
with General Thomas when he destroyed Hood's army.  He contracted
disease while in the service, from which he will probably never
recover.  After the war closed he returned to Sandwich, Illinois,
where he worked for the Sandwich Manufacturing Company until he came
to Iowa in 1872.  Mr. Carpenter was born in Onondaga County, New York,
in 1834, a son of Henry and Roxanna M. (Fay) Carpenter, natives of
Vermont and New York.  In 1836 his father moved to Ottawa, Illinois,
where he soon after died, and his mother afterward pre-empted land in
De Kalb County, where the family were among the first settlers.  He
was married in DeKalb County to Mary E. Hasbrook, a native of Dutchess
County, New York.  They have two children - Lillian H., wife of Byron
Yant, of Mercer County, Ohio, and Wallace F., at home.  One daughter
died at Arcadia in December 1881, aged twenty-eight years, and two
children, Frank and Hattie, died in early childhood."

A twin with Augusta.  The 1850 Census shows Roxanna Carpenter living
in Ottawa, LaSalle Co., Illinois with only her two youngest children,
Byron and Augusta, both age 13.  The 1860 Census shows Byron living
with his brother Wallace in the old town of Beulah, Squaw Grove
Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois employed as farm laborers.  The 1870
Census shows Byron living in Dunlap, Harrison Co., Iowa with his wife
Amy and employed as a Dry Goods Merchant.  The 1880 Census shows Byron
living in Dunlap, Harrison Co., Iowa with his wife Amy and employed as
a Live Stock Dealer.  The 1900 Census shows Byron living in Omaha
City, Douglas Co., Nebraska with his wife Amy, one child and his
mother-in-law and his occupation is listed as Stock Comm.
The family story was that Byron was in the cattle business with
Wallace in Montana (?) in the "Little Rosebud River" country.  While
the Montana story may be true, it is evident that both Byron and
Wallace wound up in the cattle business and relatively close to each
other in both Iowa and Nebraska.
