Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins

Hello John,

Thank you so much...the information that you sent will be very helpful.  I am printing a copy for my mother who will definitely have a great deal of interest.  I am the great-granddaughter of James Monroe Carpenter (16653).  He married Hallie Hurtt and they had four children Helen Cecilia, Clarence, Gladys Augusta (my grandmother 08/02/1910)  and James Monroe.  Gladys Augusta married Paul Reese Grimes and they had one daughter, Joan Elaine Grimes (my mother 04/22/1936).  She married Charles James Luerssen and they had me, Amy Elizabeth Luerssen 12/2/1967.  I married Robert Daniel Thien and we have Abigail Rose Thien 07/22/2000and Christopher Daniel Thien 02/23/2003.  I would be glad to fill in more information on this group.  My mother remembers Monroe of course and also especially his sister Eva.  She may remember Achsah as well.  I will be able to fill in more details and send them to you.

I live in Atlanta, and recently a third cousin of mine also moved here who has an interest in genealogy and family history.  He is a great great grandson of James Monroe Carpenter.  I will ask the two Carpenter men (my third cousin and my son) who are closest to me if they are interested in verifying their lineage.

I am finding this all very interesting especially now that I have a cousin who shares the interest.  I have come across several notes in Ancestry and in the notes that you sent from Dawn Davies Carpenter.  Is she also a genealogist?  She seems to have a lot of history on my branch of the Carpenters.

Thank you again for responding and for the information on William Smith Carpenter and descendants.

Kind regards,

Amy Thien

A carpenter by trade.

NEWSPAPER: Item from Bellwood Gazette dated July 24, 1896:  "The
young friends of Merle Carpenter met at his parents home Saturday evening
to celebrate the nineteenth birthday of Merle.  After a good time was

served ice cream and cake.  Then the room was cleared and games were
indulged in until a late hour, or early if you please.  All claim to have

Merle was a quiet, easy going man who married late in life.  He married

Merl's death certificate lists his occupation as "farmer" His business
as, Agriculture.  However, "Merl worked on his father's and other farms
as a young man and he inherited his father's farm land.  His children
Lynn Carpenter, Merlene Brandenburgh, and Keith Carpenter all verify that
he was a Carpenter by trade and repaired and roofed many of the homes in
the Bellwood Area.  Another mistake on the Death Certificate, his wife is
listed as M. J. Carpenter, it was Luella Minetta (Taylor) Carpenter.  The
attending doctor was, J C Pryor of David City.  Cause of death listed
was, Coronary occlusion.
