FACTS REGARDING WEEDSPORT NEW YORK
by LAZELLE R. HOPKINS, A. M. Privately printed - 1933
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nycayuga/books/factsrgw/index.html
WEEDSPORT IN 1854
From a copy of the Weedsport Times dated Sept. 23, 1854, these items were taken by S. D. Lee, a former editor of this place. The Times was published by Charles T. White, the first issue being put out Feb. 2, 1854. Mr. White did not find Weedsport a profitable field for in 1857 he moved his office to Newark, N.Y.
The Times says its home was in the building three doors south of the Basin Bridge and directly opposite C. Carpenter's blacksmith shop; subscription $1.00 per annum.
AND ...
SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS The Ancient and Honorable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York is under the jurisdiction of a Grand Lodge which meets once a year in New York City. This Grand Lodge of competent jurisdiction issued to Brutus Lodge No. 324, August 18, 1819, a charter that was surrendered a few years later--time and cause unknown.
In 1824, another charter was granted to Erie Canal Lodge No. 385. This lodge surrendered its charter and dissolved about 1826, due probably to the anti-masonic feeling aroused by the disappearance of William Morgan of Batavia.
The present lodge, Weedsport Lodge No. 385, was organized June 13, 1856. The first officers were Andrew Sittser, Master; Calvin Carpenter, S. W.; William Watson, J. W. It was probably the early meetings of this lodge which were held in the second story of the Baptist parsonage on Liberty Street. There were fifty-four members in 1879.

Subject: Re: SC Archives for Carpenters

SC (South Carolina) was involved in trade with New England and several New England Carpenters established merchant or mariner outposts in the southern port cities.
**** The Oliver mentioned in the SC archives was a mariner, possibly ABC #208. ****
The Richard was a merchant from Rhode Island who traveled throughout the southeast -- you can read more about him in my article "Richard Carpenter, Pioneer Merchant of British West Florida and the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida," in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 72, No. 1 (March 1984), pp. 51-62.  He is ABC #621.
The Dan Carpenter in Camden SC is ABC #1525, pp. 216, 370.  (His brother Timothy #1527 was an itinerant Methodist preacher who settled in Tennessee.)  Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter, widow of Phanuel Carpenter ABC #2028, also lived in Camden SC.  The Abiah Carpenter may be ABC #719, who is unaccounted for in ABC.  Margaret and husband George Carpenter lived near Abiah and were probably related, but again, not enough evidence to prove anything.  The later Carpenters in the piedmont counties were from PA, VA, and NC lines.  Lots of interesting possibilities in the South!

Attached is an excel spreadsheet of early SC Carpenters starting in 1719 that I condensed from the SC Archives.
I was interested in the Edgefield group, but noticed a Daniel Carpenter mentioned with a location of Goshen NY and reference to a SC will.  Maybe you know someone who may be interested it that.
