On the occasional trip from Vermont, Herbert's train would pass through Dedham, MA. Lillian's house abutted the railroad and would come out and wave whenever the train would pass. Herbert told his father, James, who was his fireman, that one day he would marry that girl.

Educated at Lyndonville graded school, and Lyndonville Institute. In 1889 married Lillian G. Lord of Dedham, Mass.; they have three children, Ernest G., Irving L., and Ethyl L. Drove a horse-car from Davis square, Somerville, to Park Square, Boston, 1883-5; fired locomotive seven years, and locomotive engineer seven years, on New York and New England railroad; ran stationary engines in Boston five years; New England manager Keystone Lubricating Co. of Philadelphia since 1904. A Republican; Congregationalist.
Member of Knights of Pythias, Ancient Order of United Workmen, Order of Elks, and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers."Grave is at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton, Massachusetts.
