Bio: Walter R. Howe Jr., 79, of 205 Elm St., Groton, Conn., died on Saturday at home.
He was a certified orthotist and prosthetist for Pomeroy & Williams Co. He managed the company's Springfield office until the mid-1960s, and later worked in the Wilbraham schools' maintenance department.
Born and schooled in Springfield, he was a 1931 graduate of the Technical High School. He was a resident of North Wilbraham before moving to Noank last year.
He worshipped at the Wilbraham United Church, and was a member of the Wilbraham Volunteer Fire Department and the Wilbraham Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous.
He also was assistant director of the Wilbraham Civil Defense Authority.
His wife, the former Madelyn Wright, died in 1985.
He leaves two sons, Jeffrey L. of Groton Long Point, Conn., and Gerald W. of Portsmouth, N.H., and three grandchildren.
The funeral service and burial will be at the Woodland Dell Cemetery in Wilbraham on Monday. There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, in care of the Western Massachustts Intergroup, 158 Chestnut St., Holyoke, Mass., 01040. Dinoto Funeral Home at 17 Pearl St., Mystic, Conn., is in charge.

Robert Carpenter married Virginia Eliza Gifford. Virginia is a descendent of the Spencer’s of Antwerp. Some of my grandfather’s records are a challenge since he had lied about his age to join the Army. He claimed to have been born in 1899 so he could enlist. I have a letter to him from the War Department later acknowledging his correct DOB.
