Sevilla Workings Carpenter
Birth: Sep. 15, 1857 Indiana, USA
Death: Dec. 7, 1952 Michigan, USA Mrs. Carpenter of Sand Lake Dies Mrs. Villa Carpenter, 95, one of Sand Lake's oldest and best loved residents, died Dec. 7 at Lakeview hospital after a long illness. She was taken to the hospital the day before. She was a native of Kent county, born near Ada [census records and other sources show she was born in Indiana] Sept. 15, 1857. Her parents were Samuel and Elizabeth Working. When she was a child her parents moved to Howard City. Her mother died when the daughter was 11, and she stayed with relatives until she finished high school in Sand Lake. She taught school for a time. December 31, 1881 she married Almon R. Carpenter of Lockwood, a lumber settlement between Cedar Springs and Sand Lake. They went to the farm northwest of Sand Lake which was their home continuously afterward. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1931. Mr. Carpenter died in 1933. During Mrs. Carpenter's long illness she never complained. The death of her son Glenn a few years ago was a sadness which weighed heavily on her, but she bore her sorrow with courage. She was active in the Sand Lake Methodist Church and had been Superintendent of the Sunday School, and a Bible teacher many years. She was also a member of the choir for a long time, and of the Whitefish Aid. She loved to put her thoughts into poetic form, and many were the lines she penned during the years. She held a place of respect and affection in the community where she had spent almost a century. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday, with Rev. Samuel Stout officiating, and burial was in the Pierson cemetery. The Blanchard Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Carpenter is survived by 3 sons, Claude V. of Comstock Park, Arthur R. and Harold D. of Sand Lake; by 2 daughters, Mrs. Earl (Nellie) Moots of Sand Lake and Mrs. William (Ruth) Newell of Coral; by 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Diton, 92, of Central Lake, died Thursday, February 16, 1989, at the Georgian East Nursing Home in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. She was a member of the Central Lake Congregational Church, The Congregational Women's Fellowship Group, the Central Lake Lioness Club, past member of the of the Central Lake Eastern Star, the Central Lake Library Board and had been the church organist for many years. She had taught school in the Central Lake area for over 40 years and had also been the school librarian. She was a graduate of Central Michigan University. She was born April 17, 1896, in Sterns Siding, MI, (Note: Stearn's Siding was short-lived lumber town in Mason County 4 miles east of Branch) the daughter of John and Jennie (Lindstrom) Swanson. In 1918 she married Vera Carpenter who died in 1949. In 1956, she married Bryan Diton who died in 1959. She assisted in the operation of the Diton Funeral Home in Central Lake along with her second husband. Surviving are one sister, Vernie Piper of Dearborn, many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her husband, was a sister Lucille Tate in 1983. Funeral services were held Monday, February 20, 1989, at the Central Lake Chapel of the Mortensen Funeral Homes, the Rev. Gerald Hedlund officiated. Interment in Southern Cemetery, Central Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Foundation for Exceptional Children, 16 Lakeshore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236. Ruth is a great grand aunt that I never knew but felt I did because I heard so much about her. Ruth is a daughter of John Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Thompson Smith (parents are supposed to be interred Cold Springs Cemetery but have not been able to locate). Ruthie's husband A J is a great grand uncle; she a great grand aunt. A child Horace Carpenter born 8/1897 is the only child not connected. There is a Horace Carpenter b 12/1897 died in Ft Worth, Tarrant, TX but do not know if this is him due to birth date.
