REV. LESTER CLARK.

Rev. Lester Clark, pioneer farmer of Yale, died at the home of his son in Saginaw after an illness of nine weeks of uremic poison and heart trouble on Tuesday, Nov. 28.  Funeral services were held at the M.P. church in Yale on Friday afternoon and were largely attended, Rev. Bragg, evangelist of the M.P. conference officiating, and addresses were made by Rev. Harger of Detroit, president of the M.P. conference, Rev. Baum of Saginaw, Rev. Riley of Goodals and Crandall of Yale.  Ten ministers attended the funeral, six of whom acted as pallbearers.

Lester Clark was born in Rutland, Vt., April 22, 1833.  He came to Michigan with his father's family in 1850.  They took up a homestead in Berlin, St. Clair Co.  In those early days the forests were full of wild animals and Indians were everywhere.  With one tribe which was friendly, the family carried on quite a traffic, and young Lester learned many an Indian wile and became a thorough woodsman.

July 9, 1855, he was united in marriage to Susan Smith and moved on some wild land which he bought near where Yale now stands.  At that time there was only one house there.  Together they fought the difficulties of the early pioneer days and together the hardships were all mastered.  Eight children were born to this union, five of whom survive: Mrs. Eva Black, Mrs. John Collins, Mrs. Charles Ferguson and Miss Carrie Clark, all of Yale, and Jason Clark of Saginaw.

In 1866 he joined the Methodist Protestant conference.  During the fifty years of his pastorate he has been stationed in many parts of eastern Michigan. He was a very successful revivalist, and will long be remembered in the home, the community, the church and by a wide circle of friends.

Type: Obituary MRS. LESTER CLARK
MAY 21, 1916

Mrs. Lester Clark died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eva Black early Sunday morning, May 21st, 1916 after several weeks' illness.

Funeral services were held at the M.P. church on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Bragg officiating. The body was laid to rest in Elmwood Cem..

Susan Smith was one of eight children of Albert and Lavina Smith. She was born in Pickering, Ont, May 21st 1840 and died May 21st 1916 making her 76 years of age on day of death. The family came to St Clair, MIchigan in 1850 and on July 9, 1855, she was married to Lester Clark.

A home was begun in the then wilds of Berlin Twp., and the hardships of those early days can scarcely be credited now. She stood a brave helper, by the side of her husband, rearing her children and enduring with Christian fortitude all the difficulties which beset the way of the pioneer.

Mrs. Clark was a woman of quiet, home-making habits, conscientious and earnest in her desire to live aright.

Their home was near a friendly tribe of Riley Indians with whom they became familiar, and with kindness won their good will. As years went on civilization grew space and many changes came. The farm just outside the city limits of Yale was purchased and for many years the home was here and here the golden anniversary of their marriage was celebrated. Afterwards a little home was bought in the city, and finally, as age and infirmities came, Mr. and Mrs. Clark went to live with their daughter.

Eight children were born to them, five of whom are now living, Mrs. Eva Black, Yale; Mrs. John Collins, of Lynn; Jason of Saginaw, Carrie, who lives with Mrs. Black and Mrs. Chas. Ferguson, Brockway Twp.,.
