John,
I found your posts in the Carpenter forum at ancestry.com. I am interested in the family history of Gershom and James Carpenter, the sons of Ashman Carpenter who died in 1789 in the Niagara area. I am writing veteran biographies for the men who served in the 5th Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. I have the following bios:
Capt. Gershom Carpenter (1765-1845) @
He was born in Hopewell, New Jersey to Ashman Hope Carpenter and Mary Catherine Boyle. He married Sarah Pettit (1770-1847), the daughter of Charles Pettit and Mary Smith (Pati). In 1786, he arrived in Saltfleet Twp. (SCP). In 1794, he made a land petition. Since 1792, he had been in possession of Lot 7, Con. 2 and 3, Seventh Twp. and had made improvements on that land. On August 16, 1794, the petition was granted (U706). On October 1, 1798, John and Girsham Carpenter made a land petition as residents of Lincoln Co. In 1788, they arrived in the province with their father, Ashman Carpenter, who soon after became ill and unable to care for his family. The brothers had taken care of their family since and after their father’s death in 1789. Their father had located on 400 of the 500 acres allotted him. Several years after their father’s death, their elder brother, Alexander, had arrived in the province and claimed their father’s real property without supporting the family. As no deed had been issued for the 400 acres, John and Girsham requested a division of the property among the younger brothers (U707). In 1802, Gershom and John Carpenter received Lot 7, Con. 1 and 2 and Lots 16 and 17, Con. 2 in Saltfleet Twp. (GDM pg. 29). In 1804 he served in the 1st West Lincoln as an ensign (GDM pg. 22). He was stationed at Burlington Heights from September 17 to October 24, 1813 (5L168)(5L171)(5LGC1309). On September 26, 1815, he made a war claim, as a yeoman of Saltfleet Twp., for an ox which was impressed and died while in service on August 24, 1814. John Lewis of Grimsby certified the claim. In 1824, he resubmitted his war claim as a resident of Saltfleet Twp. (WC1300). He died in Grimsby (Pati).
Sgt. James Carpenter (1779-1813) @
...

I have indices to the online documents for the land petitions, militia service, and war claims. Pati’s sources have not always been reliable and would like to confirm that information. I would also like to know both men’s birth dates, Sophia’s parentage, and further details on both men’s death and burial places. Both men appeared to have lived in Saltfleet Twp. during the war.
I have bios and sources for other men who lived in the area from Oakville to Hamilton, Ontario during the war.

John,
Thank you for the prompt reply and Gershom’s family tree. Charles intrigued me as he had received a war pension in 1875. I have a muster of about 700 men in the 5th Lincoln Militia but know that it is incomplete because documents have been lost. I have some material on the 4th Lincoln Militia where I found Charles and some other Carpenter men:
Private Ashman Carpenter (1795-1818)
...
Private Charles Carpenter (1796-)
...
Capt. William Carpenter
In 1804 he served as a captain in the 2nd Regiment of the West Riding of Lincoln County (GDM pg. 23). He served in the 4th Lincoln (OBF pg. 264). He served July 4 to 28, 1814 (4L1405)(4L1407).
These men are a lower priority for me, but I would like to know more about them. Please let me know if you want any of my sources. I have tagged the Carpenter bios with your email address so that I can update you if I learn more.

MORE:
The 4th Lincoln Militia was recruited from Clinton, Grimsby, Caistor, and Gainsborough Twp. It looks like Capt. William Carpenter was the brother of Capt. Gershom Carpenter of the 5th Lincoln Militia:
Capt. William Carpenter (c1761-) @
About 1761, William Carpenter was born in Hopewell, New Jersey to Ashman Carpenter and Mary Boyle. About 1786, he married Martha Smith, the daughter of Silas and Esther Smith. In 1799 he had a land grant in Grimsby Twp. (Car). In 1804 he served as a captain in the 2nd Regiment of the West Riding of Lincoln County (GDM pg. 23). He served in the 4th Lincoln (OBF pg. 264). He served July 4 to 28, 1814 (4L1405)(4L1407). He died in Winona (Car).
I have some War of 1812 indices. Gershom was the only one to make a war claim after the war. The Carpenter name was not recorded in my collection of militia historical notes. There should however be additional payroll records for the Carpenter men in the 4th Lincoln payroll documents which are online. I suspect that Capt. William Carpenter was present at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane on July 25 1814. I have not looked at most of these documents but estimate it would take one to two hours with high speed internet to review these documents. Please let me know if you want directions to these payrolls.

1559. Joseph James Carpenter

Information of Leslie Jay Carpenter (b. 1925) of Seattle Washington (4-1990),
Submitted by Donald W. Carpenter (born 28 Apr. 1943) of Ontario, Canada.  Children order uncertain.

Jerry Eugene Donovan (b. 1954) of Loveland, CO supplied updates to this family from a record he copied in March of 1997 that is called "History of the Carpenter Family as related by the late Joseph James Carpenter."   This record was prepared by his daughter Nellie Carpenter-Patterson and recopied by James Webster Carpenter at Gary, Ind., another descendant in the Family Tree on June 26, 1912.
This record indicates that Joseph James and his wife lived in New Jersey until 1816 when they moved to Ontario (Canada West), Canada.  All the family went with him except "brother Samuel" and "Sister Nancy at that time being married . . ."  "My parents lived in Canada 8 years.  They moved to Rochester, NY where my mother died in April 1824.  My father never remarried again, lived with brother Samuel and others of his children until his death at
the home of his youngest John A. in Canada in 1851."
"Children all born in New Jersey except Elizabeth, Lydia and John."

CHILD: Nancy listed in one record but not in another.
CHILD: Charles listed in one record but not in another. May be in wrong family.

UPDATE: Submitted by Eric Carlson 18 May 2002.
Joseph Carpenter may have had Loyalist ties in that he and Margaret Hope moved to Ontario, Canada, in 1816 and stayed there for eight years; theythen moved to Rochester, New York, where Margaret Hope died in 1824. Joseph Carpenter was born about 1760 probably in Sussex County, New Jersey, but died in Ontario, Canada, about 1851 in the home of his son, Samuel Carpenter. They had 14 children in all who were born in New Jersey or Ontario, Canada.
-- R. Robert Mutrie Carpenter Genealogy

Joseph lived in New Jersey and Pennsylvania then New York. He came with his wife to Upper Canada in 1816 and settled at Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth Co. Some of Joseph's children settled at Townsend Twp., Norfolk Co. and he joined them late in life.

The obitiuary of Joseph Carpenter appeared in the Christian Guardiannewspaper issue of 25 Jun 1851: "Joseph Carpenter was born in March,1769, in Essex County, N.J., got married in 1794 and joined thePresbyterian Church soon after that. In 1816, he came to Canada. He was converted at 50-Mile Creek in 1832, and joined the Methodist Church. His death occurred at Townsend township, May 9, 1851."

Canada West, settling in Saltfleet Twp. in 1787.  In about 1801 he married
Mary Templer of Grimsby who die in 1838.  In 1839, he married Mrs. Simonds of
Flamboro West.  He died, Sept. 12, 1845; survived by his wife and family. -
Dec. 17, 1845, p. 33,0."

In one record he has a daughter Sally who married a McMullen.
This may be a nick name for Martha, Mercy or Sarah.  But to play it safe, she
is listed as a daughter.

BIRTH:
Some claim a birth of 19 Aug 1775 in New Jersey. But no proof or ciatation given other than undocumented internet trees.

NOTE: Phoebe had five children.  Only one lived past childhood, Mary.
Phoebe may have had a sister named Phebe who died in infancy.

The above was taken from some old writings of Stephen Coon 1826-1891.
Stephen's son Burwell has added to it as has George Rancier Wilfred
Coon.  As you read some of the writings about George Rancier Coon born
1799 it says that he was sent to live with relatives after the death of
his father.  Am still waiting on some info from some descendants in
Ontario and then will get a packet off to you. You will have to give me
your mailing address again as I misplaced it.
Another spot in the writing it says Ashman Carpenter his wife Mary
Boyle along with Stephen Coon (1764-1805) are buried in St. Andrews
English Church Cemetery, Grimsby, Ontario.

My George Rancier Coon was born 13 March 1799 in Lincoln County,
Ontario. He died 10 March 1872 in Oxford County Ontario. Married 3 April
1822 to Deborah Phoebe Smith..born 8 February 1805 and died 6 June 1883.
They are buried in Quaker Street Friends Cemetery in Norwich. They were
parents of five children.. Elizabeth S.; Stephen; Mary; Phoebe; and
George Rancier II.
I have found George Rancier I parents listed in two different
places...the first is at the Family History Center and they have John
Stephen Coon...b 1762 NJ and Phoebe Carpenter. The other was just in
some old writings and I am not sure who did them...they have John S.
Coon and Phebe Carpenter.Do know from Grandfather that the Coon family
was United Empire Loyalist. Have found on the 1861 census that George
Rancier Coon I states his religion as Quaker.

John R. Carpenter
Recently I came across your answer to a question from Faye Hood regarding
Phoebe/Phebe (Have found it spelled both ways) Carpenter's husband Stephen
Coon.  Have also found that his first name may have been John.
According to information I have found, Ashman Carpenter and family migrated to
Upper Canada as Loyalists in 1783.  Soon after their arrival he became ill and
died in 1785 in Niagara, Lincoln Co., Ontario.  Since Phoebe M. Carpenter was
born in 1776, she had to have been born in Sussex County, New Jersey and not in
Saltfleet or Toronto as some records show.  My information comes from several
sources:  A History of the Coon Family by Stephen Burnell Coon (1862-1936),
several different volumes of "The Annals of the Forty" published by the Grimsby
Historical Society, "The Carpenter and Coon Families" excerpts received from
the Hamilton Genealogical Association and from family information.
My father carried the "Carpenter" name as a middle name.  John Stephen and
Phoebe had 6 children, the 6th, Stephen, was born a few months after his death
from injuries suffered when a tree fell on him while he was clearing his
property, Lot 4 Concession #5, Clinton Township, Lincoln Co., Ontario.  This is
the location of the births of all his children.  My records are as follows:

John,
I found your posts in the Carpenter forum at ancestry.com. I am interested in the family history of Gershom and James Carpenter, the sons of Ashman Carpenter who died in 1789 in the Niagara area. I am writing veteran biographies for the men who served in the 5th Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. I have the following bios:
Capt. Gershom Carpenter (1765-1845) @
...
Sgt. James Carpenter (1779-1813) @
He was born in Grimsby to Ashman Hope Carpenter and Mary Catherine Boyle (Pati). On June 29, 1802, he made a land petition as a resident of Saltfleet Twp. He was 21 years old and had arrived in the province with his father and family at least twelve years ago. On August 3, 1804, the petition was dismissed as James had not appeared before the board (U708). In 1804 he married Sophia Agusta Simons (Pati). On December 23, 1811, he made a second land petition as a yeoman of Saltfleet Twp. He had resided in the province for about 23 years. It was certified in 1804 that his father was deceased and that he had the care of his elderly mother. The petition was recommended (U709). On January 26, 1813, he died of an illness. His widow, Sophia, received a militia pension (OTW)(WP2).

CAUTION:
Ancestry issue in that 3 descendants have Y-DNA tested and are part of Group 12 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.  We are not sure if this is a NPE (Non-Paternal Event = a formal or informal adoption within a lineage) or bad genealogy.  For now we challenge the parents John Carpenter and Mary Hart.

NOTE: MAJOR CORRECTION - See page 906 (insert) and 907 in the Carpenter Memorial.
Family number 49 - corrected to as listed.

Number 325 in The Carpenter Memorial on page 86.

Marriage number 3 not in CM. See Corrections on page 906 & 907.

Pennsylvania Marriages before 1790: Two marriages given.
1768, June 16. Carpenter, Benjamin and Grace Morgan
1772, Aug. 10. Carpenter, Benjamin and Mary Morgan

Benjamin Carpenter was born near Woodbury, Gloucester, NJ just south and across the Delaware river from Philadelphia, PA. After the close of the Revolutionary War, he moved to Fauquier, VA (NOTE: NEVER PART OF , now W.Virginia), where his first and second (NOTE: not 2nd & 3rd) wives died. In 1797 he removed to Harrison county, VA (now WV). In 1804 to what is now Lawrence County, OH where he died in 1809.

NOTE: Fauquier, VA was never part of WV. There were two basic ways to get to Fauquier County from the Delaware River area between Philadelphia and Gloucester County, NJ.
1) By ship down the Delaware River to Delaware Bay then out to the Atlantic Ocean and back through Chesapeake Bay and up the Rappahannock River to a few miles southeast of Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia, near the single point where Warren, Fauquier, and Rappahannock counties come together. Then east into Fauquier County. This or something similar is most likely.
2) By land from Philadelphia west over the Philadelphia Wagon Road toward Washington, DC then southwest to the Old Northwestern Turnpike then eat into Loudoun County then south into Fauquier County.

To go to Harrison County, WV from Fauquier County is by land. North into Loudoun County then west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike over the Shenandoah Mountains until you get to Harrison County then part of VA.
To go to Lawrence County, OH from Harrison County you head west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike until you get to the Ohio River. Then use the river to float to Lawrence County. Note, there was also a trail that went inland (west of the river into Ohio) then south.

Elizabeth McFarland Hughes

McFarland was the name of her first husband.

4027. Linny Carpenter

Number 8960 in the Carpenter Memorial.  See page 824.
She died in her 13th year in Ohio per the CM.  Another record indicates
she was a stillborn death.  Possibly 2 Linny children.

1567. John Carpenter

MARRIAGE:
He did not marry Mary Eldridge on  6 Dec 1784. This has been disproved. See RIN 131769 who married Mary Eldridge.

MARRIAGE:
If he did not marry Mary, then who did he marry and where did he go after Philadelphia? Did he go to present day WV? More research needed.
Some place on line show he married a Mary Schumacher abt 1780 in Philadephia. But the John Carpenter she married died at age 21. So that is discounted.

CHILDREN:
Where did these DMY dates come from? What are there source?  Is it a family bible?
They are first seen in the old Ancestral File (AF) and no one has expanded upon them since.

AF:
Several submissions from 1989, 1991 then PRF there after. Then resubmitted to the updated AF in 2011.

1568. Joseph Carpenter

Number 326 in the Carpenter Memorial.  See page 86 and 906.
He is probably the father of Samuel H. Carpenter of Philadelphia. - This statement has been proved wrong.

Did he move to Greenwich, Warren, New Jersey?

Other than what is in the CM, nothing really found. Likely misidentified?

4037. Samuel H. Carpenter

This is not the Samuel H. Carpenter of Philadelphia. But it is left here for reference.

1572. John Carpenter

STORY:
The following story has been DISPROVED by Y-DNA testing via the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - Group 3. Group 3 is an English line and not an Irish line.
There were ... four brothers [who] came from Ireland and settled in New York.  Two came to WV, John and David, and one stayed in Ohio (which would explain the migration to Ohio for a time) and one remained in New York.  The story is similar to what her grandfather Burse told her older sister.  In this version, three brothers had come from Ireland during one of the famines.  The three brothers were John,  Ashman and David Carpenter.  John went to Fort Pitt and then settled in Virginia, now WV.  Ashman reputedly went to North Carolina and Patty was unsure about David. - Yet another version has David to PA.

Information prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee.  See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood.

Founder: Captain William Carpenter b. 1605 in England and came to America in 1638. He had more descendants in the revolutionary war than any other family.  -- JRC adds Confirmed Group 3!

On 29 July 2005 Richard wrote:  "The Cds are very valuable tools for connecting to William of Reho and His son Captain John Carpenter. I was able to trace the the line of Johns, from Captain John back, but the link ended when one of his descendants failed to have a John. However I did find something notable that is listed. One of Captain John Carpeter's (b.1626) sons was Hope Carpenter)b.1660. His wife was Mary Ashman. They had a son named Ashmond Carpenter( along with some other descendants of this line named Ashman. This is probably where one would find the link between our Ashman Carpenter and William of Rehoboth Carpenter. Have you found any info on Ashman Carpenter's parents other than the ones that say John and Nancy. They could still possibly be the parents, but it is not John>John>John untill Captain John Carpenter. It would have to be from Hope Carpenter, as the Name Ashman Carpenter started poppingup after their marriage. I am going to leave the Captain John Carpenter and his ancestors, but I am going to leave the middle blank, as their is a connection. Let me know what you think."
COMMENT:
"The Hope/Ashman line is actually mainly from New Jersey. They were also loyalists to the crown in the rev war, meaning they migrated to Ontario." JRC adds yes they are related genetically!

I have seen that Hope Carpenter hypothesis before. Maybe there is some credance to it, but I would want more firm data."
