23466. Louis Jonathan Carpenter

COMMENT:
My grandfather once told me (paraphrasing) that there is always going to be someone somewhere willing to take your money, your property or your woman. And they would do it by hook or crook. And if you did not develop a good BS detector you would be a patsy.  Not bad for a person who was almost functionally illiterate.

NOTE:
LOUIS was married 3 times.  He was a Chef (cook) on the Great Lakes and
Northern Railroad.  He was born on a farm outside Dickey.

BIRTH:
He was born as "LUTHER" but later changed it to LOUIS.

MISC:
Information from the "Dickey Reporter" supplied by Roland L. Carpenter in Nov. 1996:
12 April 1913 - Louis Carpenter was arrested and fined for ringing the fire bell tuesday evening without reason or authority.  He was tried before Justice Taylor and fined three dollars.
9 October 1914 - Louie Carpenter is becoming very popular with the young ladies and mostly any time on Sunday or evenings you may see Louie driving or walking with a young lady.  Louie says he just loves those moonlight strolls.

MARRIAGE:
1 - MATTIE CAMPBELL - His first wife whom he divorced. He said he married in 1914. They had 3 children Howard John in 1915, Glenn J. in 1916 and Andrew in 1917.
2 - FRANCIS ROSENKRANS (FISHER) - A widow who divorced him after 2 children. They had Richard Louis in 1931 and Robert Arlen in 1934. Later they remarried in 1940 then divorced again.

FRANCES C BRAATEN  21 Feb 1900 31 Aug 1993 59101 (Billings, Yellowstone, MT) (none specified) 474-03-9424 Minnesota

STORY:
My grandmother, Frances Caroline Rosenkrans was born on 21 Feb 1900 in Henryville, Lawrence, TN. She died on 31 Aug 1993 in Billings, Yellowstone, MT.

Frances had seven children of which only five would survive childhood from her first marriage with Charles Samuel Fisher. They were married on 6 Sep 1917 in Dickinson, Stark, ND and on 14 Feb 1928 Charles was killed while loading frozen coal into a tender car that rode behind the locomotive steam railroad engine.  Frances would marry again on 21 Mar 1930 in Fargo, Cass, ND to Louis Jonathan Carpenter, my grandfather.  During the depression, times were tough, full time jobs were rare and money short.

Just before World War II, Frances Carpenter was a school teacher in Fargo, Cass, ND.  Her second husband, Louis Carpenter, worked on the railroad as a cook. She had two children, Richard (my father) and Robert with Louis.

In 1940, Louis Carpenter brought back word that the Kaiser Shipyards were training and hiring workers to make ships. He had been in Portland and brought back papers for her to read to him the requirements to him. Louis had not been a good student and had dropped out early to work.  His reading skills were skimpy at best.

The Kaiser Shipyards were seven major shipbuilding yards located mostly on the U.S. west coast during World War II. They were owned by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, a creation of American industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, who established the shipbuilding company around 1939 in order to help meet the construction goals set by the United States Maritime Commission for merchant shipping. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiser_Shipyards

The Carpenters rode the train to Portland, Oregon in the summer of 1940 and stayed with relatives while Louis and Frances went to school learning how to be welders.  Frances was one of the first female welders to complete the welders class. She and two other women had been told that if they passed the class, Henry Kaiser would hire them. Frances had a knack for straight welding without pockets and was valued for this. She had to endure many incidents of harassment from the men.  Her husband Louis, was involved in several fights because he was pressured to make her quit.  Both passed the class, but Frances was a much better welder than her husband.

Louis and Frances started at Ryan Point in Vancouver, Washington part of the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation then run by the Kaiser Shipyards. Each day they rode the Portland City bus to a Kaiser Worker pickup point. There they rode the Kaiser bus to work.  They carried their own lunch and provided their own clothing.  Kaiser issued gloves, apron and a welders helmet to them which stayed at work. Because they lived away from the Company town, they saved money and paid rent to their relatives.

When the war started many men went into the military and women were encouraged to replace them at jobs normally held by women.  As the number of ship workers fell the demand went up.  Classes in welding and hot riveting were held twice a day then later three times a day. More than half of the students were female and many were from other minorities. Frances quickly became a lead welder.

Frances was asked to visit some of the schools to encourage and report back what was going on.  Because of the demand, an emergency shipyard was thrown together in the St. Johns area of Portland, Oregon for the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation.  This was a rough and tumble job site without the normal buildings for gear and supplies.  Tents were put up and later buildings replaced tents. Frances was sent there as a lead welder and as a example for other women.

Different ships needed different quality welding.  Liberty ships were not expected to be attacked and were made as fast as possible and with more hot rivets than welding.  There was a great need for small aircraft carriers called the Casablanca-class escort carriers. These jeep (a nickname) carriers needed to be completed quickly and the quality and number of welds needed were much higher per each section.  So Frances went back across the river with the best female welders to work on the jeep carriers.

On April 5, 1943, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt (Her first name was Eleanor) toured the facility and was introduced to Mrs. Frances Carpenter, a shipyard welder.  They chatted for about ten minutes and Frances went back to work but not before a picture was taken. The picture made the local newspaper and it was seen by her relatives and clipped out for her.

Sadly, Frances’ marriage to Louis Carpenter did not survive.  Either an injury or fight combined with alcohol caused Louis to leave the shipyard.  And he left town. Frances continued to work as a welder until late 1944 when the emergency shipyards began to close.  Some workers were transferred and some were let go.  At this time Frances was plagued by repeated small injuries and her back was hurting her constantly. She decided to quit work.

About this time, Frances received a telegram from the War Department that her son Private Charles Stanley Fisher (from her first marriage) was missing in action during the German attack on American forces in the Ardennes during what would be called the Battle of the Bulge.  It would not be until the end of January 1945 that she would be notified that he had been severely wounded and evacuated to a hospital near Paris. He would live. Another son from her first marriage, Billy Irwin Fisher fought in the Pacific and came home without any physical injuries. Two of her daughter’s husbands (from her first husband) also served in the military during the war.

By this time period Frances was plagued by repeated small injuries and her back was hurting her constantly.  She moved back to North Dakota in 1945 where her divorce to Louis Carpenter was finalized.  On 12 Apr 1945 President Franklin D. Roosevelt died and Frances wrote a note to Eleanor Roosevelt offering her condolences. She was one of some 35,000 women who wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt.

During a Lutheran Church dance in Dickenson, Stark, ND, she met an older widower farmer named John Alfred Braaten. On a date, on 8 May 1945 they heard that the war in Europe was over. They married in Dickinson on 21 June 1945.

John & Frances were listening on a radio powered by a battery charged by a windmill generator – no electricity on the farm – when they heard the announcement that Japan had surrendered on 14 Aug 1945.

Carl William "Kourt" Scheiding

Subject: Margaret Ella Carpenter
Hello, My great uncle was Kourt William Scheiding, born 10 Aug 1897. He married Margaret Ella Carpenter in 1916, and they had three children. I found a family history for Henry Patrick Frazier at along with your name and email address. Margaret Ella Carpenter was a descendant of Henry Patrick Frazier. Kourt was my grandfather's brother. He was one of 8 children that were orphaned after their mother died in 1910. Would you be interested in sharing information? Patricia Stewart

MORE:
Kourt Scheiding was the oldest child in a family of 8 children that were abandoned by their father in 1910 after their mother died. Kourt was 13 and my grandfather, William, was 9. They never saw each other again. My grandfather eventually went to live with the Hamiltons and took their name even though he was never legally adopted. My mother and I would really like to learn more about the family before they came over from Germany in 1902, and about the Volkmans, who were related on his father's side. Some of that family also settled in North Dakota, and we are still trying to find exactly how they are connected. I don't suppose you know anything about these families, except their descendants' names and dates, but we thought it would be worth asking about. My mother's family had some contact in the past with Violet Scheiding Clearwater, her sister Frances Scheiding Greenwood Scharper, and their half brother Jack Raymond Cook Nelson. These were all children of Margaret Ella Carpenter. So we have a little information about Kourt from them. I have also recently contacted a step-granddaughter of Kourt who has been filling me on some more details of Kourt's life. He was a baker/restaurant owner, and he baked the inauguration cake for Herbert Hoover in 1929. He also traveled in the 1930s with the Royal American Shows carnival that traveled by train around the country and Canada. He ran the pie car, which I understand was the dining car for all the carnival workers. Evidently he owned a bakery in Pittsburgh at one point, because my new contact has told me that his wife got it in their divorce. His life has been a blank to us from about 1921 when Frances was born up until he died in 1963. We do have his obituary and funeral service record, plus a few pictures. His last 12 years were spent in Lake Harbor, Florida where he owned "Pop's Restaurant".
