History of Thurston, NY From: Landmarks of Steuben County, New York Edited by: Hon. Harlo Hakes Assisted By: L. C. Aldrich and Others D. Mason & Company, Publishers, Syracuse, New York, 1896
Thurston
On the 28th of February, 1844, the Legislature divided the town of Cameron, and taking 22,000 acres off the east side created a new town, naming it Thurston, in honor of William B. Thurston, an extensive land owner in the region who did much to promote local improvement and development. ...
In the same connection and worthy to be named among the older residents of what is now Thurston, were
... Alva Carpenter, Harley Sears, O. P. Alderman and others, all of whom were identified with the growth of the town if they were not pioneers.
...
The supervisors of Thurston have been as follows: Joseph Cross, 1844; Fenner Eddy, 1845-48; John S. De Pue, 1849-50 and 1856-65; Noble H. Rising, 1851; Cornelius Bouton, 1852-53; John Royce, 1854-55; Oliver P. Alderman, 1866; Alva Carpenter, 1867 and 1869-71; ...

"John married in 1861 in Chatauqua county, NY, and that he and his wife almost immediately left for Vernon county, WI.  I even have a copy of their marriage license along with family sheets ..."

E-MAIL: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 From: John Carpenter
Carl, my grandfather, Alva Francis Carpenter, was born
in Genoa, Vernon county WI in 1863.  He had two
younger brothers, Robert and John, and three younger
sisters, Louisa (married Van Vleet and stayed in WI),
Mary Roxanna (married Lorenzo Dow Fox and went to MS),
and Agnes (married J. O. Ferguson).
My greatgrandparents came directly from Harmony,
Chatauqua county, NY.  John was born at Cameron,
Steuben county NY in 1834.
Don't know if this is a help or not, but I believe
that some of John's siblings and first cousins also
went to WI about the time he did (1861)

E-MAIL: Tue, 4 Apr 2000 From: "John Mac Carpenter"
Thanks, John, I'm descended from this Timothy's son John, thru his son Alva
Francis, then Alva, then my brother Alva Francis and me.  Timothy's son
Alvah was another Alva Francis whose wife was named Roxana.  According to
family tradition AF was a physician in NYC.  My grandfather, Alva Francis,
had a sister named Roxana, and also named his older daughter Roxana.  That
was my aunt Sana, whose only granddaughter is Roxanne.  You never know how
much tradition to trust.  There's nearly always some truth in it so you
can't disregard it, but it changes drastically thru the years.  If you would
fax Charles addenda to me at 915-336-3928, I'll copy it and add it to the
copies I had made.  Chad was very nice and gave me permission to distribute
it as long as I don't make money on it.  Seems to be very interested in
continuing his grandfather's work.
Another family tradition is that our grandfather went to Mexico with his
daughter Sana in about 1909 to look for an uncle of his who was a merchant
on the Santa Fe/Chihuahua trail and was last heard from in a small town
north of ciudad Chihuahua....no tradition as to first name, but there are a
lot of Carpinteros and Carpinteiros in northern Chihuahua from ciudad
Chihuahua to Juarez.  They lived in Mobile AL at the time and took the train
to CA and back spending time in NM and Chihuahua and he bought a ranch in NM
and moved his family there the following year.
