Bio:
The petition of John Carpenter at the Surrogate's Court in Elmira, Chemung County, New York, stated his father died April 27, 1849 in Elmira and that he had the following named heirs: Widow, Rebecca and children, James Carpenter, Daniel B. Carpenter, the petitioner John Carpenter, William Carpenter, Benjamin Carpenter, Betsey Cook, Rebecca Campbell, and grandchildren, children of Sally VanSickle, deceased, Willian VanSickle, Thomas VanSickle, Betsey VanSickle, Daniel VanSickle, Elijah VanSickle, and Lewis VanSickle, all minors, except William VanSickle.

He was undoubtedly buried in the Baptist Cemetery (Wisner) in Elmira. In 1875, a survey was done, with 227 legible memorials, in preparation for closure and the creation of a park. His name was not amongst the list, though the wife of his son John, who died in 1841, was included. The city removed the remains, that had not previously been removed by heirs to Woodlawn Cemetery. HIs remains would have been lost in any type of transition in 1876, unless his family had previously removed his remains to Second Street Cemetery, where many Baptist Cemetery remains were removed too.

If you click on the obituary I provided it cites the source - The Elmira Gazette, Elmira, New York, May 3, 1849.
Any newspaper clipping I provide always cites the source. The Elmira newspapers are online on a free site
NY https://nyshistoricnewspapers.org/
The search portion of the site doesn’t often pick up a name from the newspapers, so you often have to go looking through each newspaper.
Furthermore, - “that said Deceased died at his place of residence in said town of Elmira on the 27th day of April last past” refers to the most recent date, even though the language may seem confusing in modern times.

I believe it is quite evident that Benjamin C. Carpenter was a son of
Joshua and Sarah (Burt) Carpenter.   He was probably one of the 3 males
under 10 years old in 1800 census. He was 26-44 in 1820, 30-39 in 1830,
and 50-59 in 1840 census', making him born about 1790, unless he is
marked in the wrong catagory in 1840, then born between 1790-1800.  1850
census, Veteran, Chemung, NY, Eunice Carpenter is age 54, born NJ, Eliza
Spencer is in this household, and named in the will.
Dennis Carpenter
The year 1790/1791 is consistent with all the census options. Actually mid to late 1790 to early 1791 matches best.
John Hawthorn Carpenter was born 2 May 1791, Chemung Town, Tioga, NY.  This rules out early 1791.  This leaves the period of about May to July 1790 as an option.

Not listed in the Carpenter Memorial.  Chemung Town was later called El Mira.

E-MAIL: Sun, 27 May 2001   From:    "William T Rozell"
I am searching for a Joshua Carpenter who was born in 1740 in Jamaica, Long Island, NY.  He died in 1791 in Pine City, Seneca County, NY.  And he was married to Sarah Burt.  Do you have any information on your cd project that has to do with these people?  My great grandfather's biological family name was Carpenter.  His name was Thomas Jay Turner.  His father was Thomas Jay Carpenter.  I believe his great grandfather was also Thomas Carpenter who's father was Joshua.  I hope you can help me.
Stacey L. Rozell

Mentioned in his brother's will of 16 Mar 1846 as being of Bigflats County, Chemung, NY

Ann Brown

MARRIAGE: An Ann Brown married Henry Carpenter - but which one?

1636. Richard A. Carpenter

NOTE:  I list two marriages for this Richard.  The second one is two children who may be two missing sons of Richard. But other than location and time, nothing else ties them together. More work needed.

The AF has 1771/1774 as birth range.
Dawn Davies Carpenter of Lakeside, CA submitted this Carpenter descendancy
line in April 1998 and an update in Dec. 1999. She has Jan 1771 as birth date.
Richard was born in, Orange Co. NY in a log cabin, on a farm called
Longridge which was on the road between Warwick and Florida, NY.  His
father Joshua farmed in this location until sometime in the 1780s.
Chemung county was created in 1836 from parts of Tioga county, NY.
Tioga county was created in 1791 from part of Montgomery county, NY.

Richard Carpenter, born in Elmira, NY. moved his family to Angelica, NY
in 1814.  In 1819 he moved into West Almond, Allegany Co., NY and farmed
on Black Creek.  His family were among the first White settlers to
live in that area.
SOURCE: "The Town OF West Almond, 150 Years".
"Early Settlers:  The first pioneer settler of West Almond was Daniel
Atherton, Who Settled at the center in 1816 and kept the first tavern in
1817.  Seth Marvin, Chester Bennett, John Patterson, Jasper White of
Vermont, Richard Carpenter with his sons, Samuel & Smith, David H. and
Ellison Carpenter and Abial Weaver were among the first settlers.
SOURCE: West Almond.  Chapter XLV.  By Geo. Morton.  Richard was a dairy
farmer.
SOURCE: Richard is mentioned in the "Alleghany County Advocate" in 1869 as
coming to Alleghany county with his wife, 4 daughters and 4 sons in 1814.
Please note that Margaret is listed as dying in 1809.  This means there was
another female child who died young.  Or Margaret's death date is wrong.
Probably the former.

CENSUS 1800: The United States 1800 Census Records Showing Richard Carpenter
(1) Elmira, NY (2) Angelica, NY:
Richard Carpenter:  Newtown (Later named Elmira), Tioga County.;
Richard, age 26-45.  Wife, age 26-45.  Children: 2 girls under 10.
CENSUS 1810: Richard A. Carpenter:  Elmira, Tioga Co.;  Richard, age 26-45.
Wife, age 26-45.  Children: 5 (or 2) males under ten. (*Number on original
census is not clear) 1 girl under ten.  Two girls, 10-16.
* Lynn Carpenter of Washington D.C. looked at the original census
information at the Bureau of Census in 1997 and was of the opinion that
it was a five.
As noted the 1810 Census; Elmira, NY lists Richard A. as having 5 sons born
between 1800 and 1810.  William Smith was b. 1800, Richard Ellison b.
1802, Samuel b.1804 and Davis Howell b. 1806.  Perhaps a son may have
died at an early age.  It is thought by some researchers that William may
have been a twin.  Twins also run through the generations in this line of
Carpenters. (Dawn Davies Carpenter Dec. 1999)
CENSUS 1820: Richard Carpenter : Angelica, Allegany County.   Richard, age 45
& older, Wife, 45 & older.  Children: Two males 10 to 16 yrs.  Two males
16-26. One daughter 10-16 yrs.  (Two older daughters in 1810 census would be
20-30 and may be married).
CENSUS 1830: Richard Carpenter:  Angelica, Allegany County.  Richard, age 60 &
older.  Wife, age 60 & older. 3 males between 20 & thirty. (Smith
Carpenter, Richard's son now appears on the census as a head of household
in Angelica).
CENSUS 1840: Head of household is Richard E. (Ellison) Carpenter:  New Almond,
Allegany Co. Richard (this is Richard A. Carpenter), age 60 or older.  Wife,
age 60 or older. 1 male, 30-40 (Ellison is age 34)) 1 female, 15-20.
Note: Ellison was a batchlor who was farming the dairy farm owned by his
father.  The female age 15-20 is either a domestic helper or a grandchild.

Richard A. Carpenter first came to the town of Angelica, NY  in 1814 and
farmed a large piece of land (about 100 acres)  which was situated right in
the town.  The Carpenter Family  home was built  near the river just where it
crossed the main street.  They built their home and resided there for
about five years until Mr. Richard Carpenter purchased land on Black
Creek from Mr. Church.  At the time of purchase it was within the town of
Angelica but as of 1834 is in West Almond, NY.  In 1870 this farm was
known as the Lindsey Farm. This per Robert Dorsey the museum curator in
Angelica, NY in 1999.
Richard appears in the 1840 U.S. Census as living on a farm with his son
Richard Ellison Carpenter.  He would have been seventy at this time and
was likely retired.  The farm appears to be Richard's  property and
Ellison, a bachelor, was the farmer..........Dawn Carpenter

NOTES ON THE IDENTITY OF RICHARD A. CARPENTER, ELMIRA, CHEMUNG, NY AND
RICHARD CARPENTER, ALLEGANY CO., NY:
As yet there is no documented proof that Richard A. Carpenter of Elimira,
NY and Richard Carpenter of West Almond, NY are the same person. There
is an abundance of circumstantial evidence, some of which are;
1.  The Richard A. Carpenter census of 1800, 1810 and the Richard
Carpenter of West Almond, NY, 1820, 1830, and 1840 are a match in the
number of children and the ages of the family members.  (The only
exception is the entry of 5 sons in 1810 and 4 sons in 1820 and 1830.  It
is not unlikely that a son may have died in his youth.)
2.  Richard A. Carpenter's last sale of property in Elmira, NY was in
1813. Land Records, Book 6, p. 70.
Richard Carpenter of Allegany Co. arrived in Allegany Co. and bought land
in Angelica, NY  in 1814.  He later purchased farm land (1819) in what is
now West Almond, NY.***
3. Richard of Allegany Co. son's names; William Smith Carpenter, Richard
Ellison Carpenter, Samuel Carpenter and David Howell Carpenter all bore
names that either match family or close friends of Joshua Carpenter,
Richard A. Carpenter's father.
4.  After examining all of the Richard Carpenters on the U S Census from
1800 to 1840 there are only two in all of the States that match age and
number of all family members.
5.  Richard A. (Chemung) and Richard (Allegany) were the only
Richard Carpenters who, at that time, went (on occasion) by the name Rich.
6.  Three published articles  mention that Richard Carpenter "removed his
wife and family of eight children from Elimira, NY to Allegany Co. in
1814.  One states that the children were all born in Elmira.
At that time Elmira's population was less than 3,000 and there was only
one other Richard Carpenter in the town.  He was another 10 to 20 years
older and number of children do not match.  (The Town of West Almond, 150
years, History of Allegany Co. by Geo. Morton, The Allegany Advocate;
1869.)

Early Settlers of the pioneer settlers of West Almond (Allegany County, NY) include "Richard Carpenter with his sons Samuel and Smith, David H. and Ellison Carpenter ... are listed among the first settlers. They are listed between 1818 and 1820 listing of when settlers came to West Almond.

Mehitable or Mahetable

Richard's wife is still alive on the 1840 census and both she and Richard
are living with their son Richard Ellison on the original Carpenter
farm.  She appears to be about 5 years younger than her husband and is
listed as between 60 and 69 on this census.

4219. Richard Ellison Carpenter

Richard Ellison lived his life as a bachelor.  When he was 28 years old
he purchased some undeveloped land located east of and adjoining his
brother Smith's farm.  Seventy acres and Forty/hundredth of one acre. (As
his deed states)  "On the 16th day of November in the year of our Lord
One thousand eight hundred and thirty Philip Church of Angelica, County
of Allegany, State of New York and Anna Matilda, his
wife ... for the sum of One hundred and seventy-six dollars
in hand here by convey and confirm, etc."   This purchase was witnessed
by Thomas Dryer and written and signed in the presence of Wich Van
Wickle.  Sealed November 16, 1830.....Source:  Court Records Belmont, NY
Source: History of Allegany County, by Morton. Dawn Davies Carpenter has a
copy of the deed.
Ellison and his brother both cleared the land which was heavily wooded.
Soon after it was cleared Ellison sold his  interest in the land and left
David to occupy it alone.
In 1868, after returning from a political meeting. David, Ellison's
brother, shot him in the shoulder.  The ball completely severed his
artery and Ellison died a short time later.  Ellison was 66 years old at
the time. The story is told fully under David H. Carpenter's Notes.
There is a gravestone for Richard in the shape of an obelisk in the Dawn
of the Day Cemetery.  It is about 6ft. 6in. tall and has the day of death
inscribed on it.
