1676. Richard Carpenter

Number 1027 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 165.
Family is on page 286  (#347). No spouse listed.
A blacksmith. He was an early settler of Minisink and owned 100 acres, now (in
1898) owned by Thadeus B. and Henry W. Denton.  He lived in a log cabin on the
hill, made potash and worked carried on his farm.

Death about 1816 Minisink Twp, Orange, NY?  Or...? See below.

Per the above record he had a daughter named Anne who married Terry Denman.
No record of this Richard marrying about 1767/1769 with a daughter Anne.
The closest marriage found was in 1768 a Richard Carpenter married a Mary Hallock in 1768 of Milton, Ulster, NY. She was born 3 Mar 1748 Rye, Westchester, NY. No children listed. Her Father:  Edward Hallock     Disc #106     Pin #448384   Her Mother:  Phebe Clapp     Disc #106     Pin #448380 .  That Richard Carpenter was of Red Springs, Musketa Cove, Queens, LI, NY and is well documented.

This leaves the question if the above daughter Anne belongs to another Richard Carpenter and there are many possibilities but none marrying a Denman or similar.

The following information was added and when in the future the correct Richard is found or confirmed it will be useful to that researcher. 11/2008 JRC

BIRTH: About 1750 or 1751 per the record below.  However, it also says he was age 20 when his daughter Elizabeth was born in 1771 making him born about 1751.

White Man's Legend
In the early Days, when new settlements had to be named, the white man, in imitation of his aboriginal forerunner, gave a name to his settlement that was associated either tradition, or, as in this ease, with his ideal of loveliness. According to Hon. Hiram Gray, Matthew Carpenter, then a member or the Legislature and a man of influence, having seen this beautiful valley, resolved that Newtown should be the principal city, and that it should bear the name of a lady friend for whom he entertained a high opinion, and accordingly, in 1828 [sic 1808], the name was changed to Elmira.
• According to the statement of Hon. Hiram Gray.

"With anguish rent, the dying man
   To heaven raised his eye:
His quivering lips a prayer began,
   His bosom heaved a sigh:
To Him hears the ravens cry ---
   Who hears the sinner pray;
Respect Thy Word, O God, and be
My weeping widow's stay!"

WISNER CEMETERY; also known as" Baptist Burying Ground", "Church Street Cemetery", "Main Street Cemetery", "Old Church Street Cemetery", and "Baptist Church Cemetery".

WISNER BURYING GROUND (7/1802-10/1877)
ALSO CALLED BAPTIST BURYING GROUND, CHURCH STREET CEMETERY, MAIN STREET CEMETERY, OLD CHURCH STREET CEMETERY, BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY

The Wisner, or Baptist, Burying Ground was located between West Church and West Gray Streets, immediately east of North Main Street in the City of Elmira. It is today used as a public park with the name Wisner after the donor of the land.

In 1788 the land was plotted as Lots #28 and #29 and owned by Henry Wisner. His son Jeffrey gave the lots to the village of Newtown in 1802 for cemetery use. The original burial ground of the new village was located on land of Stephen Tuttle near the junction of East Water and Sullivan Streets, but it must have been small and filled by 1802, as the first burial in the new Wisner took place on July 29 or 30, 1802, being the body of Doctor Joseph Hinchman, the second physician in the area. As far as known, no bodies were ever removed from the cemetery on East Water Street, and its location was lost as the village grew.

By the time of the termination of the Civil War, the Wisner Burial Ground had reached a point where very little burial space was left, and the grounds had deteriorated, appearing as though it had no care for many years. It was a decided “eye sore” with dead trees, uncut grass and weeds, fences dilapidated and broken in several places, and the tombstones sunken, broken, or tipped over. As a result of the decadent condition, there were those who desired that the use of the land be discontinued as a public burial site and converted into a park. The subject of a change was before the city authorities for several years, but it was feared that the land would revert back to any of the descendents of the original owners if it was put to any use other than a cemetery.

On June 7, 1875, Mayor Smith presented a communication to the Common Council in which he suggested that inquiries be made as to the legal difficulties, if any, in the way of removing the bodies; also what the cost of removal of the remains would be. A committee was appointed and reported to the Council on September 5th that there were no vested private titles in and to any portion of the graveyard, thus making those who were buried there mere squatters and remaining only by the sufferance of the city! The Committee also reported the cost of the taking up of the remains would amount to $668.50. This included new boxes and the resetting of the headstones. The city then advertised in the newspapers for six months their intentions, informing friends and relatives interested that during that time they could remove the bodies themselves, should they elect to do so, and at the end of the six month period the city would remove all the bodies, placing them in the new Woodlawn Cemetery. On September 20th, the report was accepted.

There were 227 headstones with legible inscriptions, 96 for them being for persons between one and ten years of age; 21 between ten and twenty years; 110 over twenty years of age. There were seventeen graves with low stones with no inscriptions, and 23 that appeared sunken into the ground, either because the bodies had been removed, or were so decayed that nothing but dust remained to support the upper earth.

The task of removing the remains was entrusted to John Jones, an ex-slave who had found friends in Elmira during his flight from Virginia prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1844, he returned from Canada to make his home in the city, and from 1847 until 1890, served as the sexton of the First Baptist Church. He began as a grave digger soon after settling in his new home, and prepared the graves of hundreds of persons in the Wisner, Second Street, and Woodlawn Cemeteries.  During the Civil War, when the Federal government maintained a prison camp just west of Elmira for Confederate soldiers, he buried all the southerners who died while confined behind the walls.

In 1877, all the remains still in the Wisner Burial Ground were removed, under the direction of John Jones. Prior to that, on October 9, 1858, he removed the body of Colonel John Hendy, considered by many to be the first settler in what was to become Elmira. He had died in 1840 and had been buried on a raw March day.

Speaking of the removal of the Revolutionary War veteran’s remains, in later years, John Jones said: “ I found the skeleton all complete and the hair was long and beautiful, white and wavy – remarkable. I took it up and hung it in my hands like a perfect wig. The men that watched me said it was wonderful.”

Jones then carefully placed the hair at the head of the skeleton and it was forever sealed from sight in the new coffin that had been provided. Jones then reburied the coffin in Woodlawn.

Before all the headstones were removed, Ausburn Towner, a local historian, newspaperman, and writer, copied the inscriptions the best he could, and the data was published in the local newspapers.

The following is that list, with some added data enclosed in brackets. This information does not appear on the gravestones, but is added for interest. Stones marked with * indicate markers which were found on August 27, 1973, at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, New York, by Doris Boyd. Without a doubt, there are many others scattered about the site.

I found a death notice for James Mathews. Alas, it indicates he died in Elmira, but there is not date. I created a memorial page for him and he is linked to his daughter Catharine. I also created one for his wife. I don’t have the time at the moment to research her to know if she died somewhere other than Elmira. Perhaps her husband James came to Elmira to live after her death.
Actually, I just took a quick look and James Mathews and James Mathews Jr (perhaps one in the same) appear on the 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803 assessment lists of Newtown so I would suspect they lived here and that Hannah died in Elmira. Do you know where the birth and death dates for her were obtained to know if they are accurate?

Burial: Ithaca City Cemetery, Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York, USA

Bio: (The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa.  Sunday, January 8, 1871, page 1.)

Death of Rev. Dr. Wisner.
        Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jan. 7
The venerable Rev. William Wisner, D.D., formerly of Ithaca, N.Y., one of the most eminent and successful ministers of the Presbyterian church, died at the residence of his son in this city, this morning, at the advanced age of 89 years.
----------------------
From Find A Grave member # 4886444

Rev. Wisner was a Presbyterian minister. He practiced law beginning in 1805. He studied theology with a Rev. Simeon R. Jones. He was pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Athens, Pennsylvania (1811-1815), after which he served the church in Ithaca, New York (1816-1831 and again 1838-1849). He was the pastor in Rochester, New York (1831-1835, and in St. Louis, Missouri (1836-1837). In 1840, he was the Moderator of the New School Assembly.* In 1870 he moved to the Presbytery of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (The content of this paragraph was taken from The Presbyterian Church in Iowa 1837-1900 by Rev. Dr. Joseph W. Hubbard, page 258.)
(*To explain; briefly, the Old-New Schools split in the Presbyterian denomination began in 1837. The Old School was the more conservative, whereas the New School was less so. The core of it was over the level of strictness one should adhere to the teachings of theologian John Calvin. The issue of slavery eventually exacerbated the division. The New Schoolers opposed slavery. The two sides began to stitch themselves together again over the years 1865-1870, after which they were again seamlessly together.)

Always taking a great interest in public affairs, he kept up an intelligent observation of current events even up to the last years of his advanced age. He was a strong republican and a good citizen, a man greatly esteemed by a wide circle of friends." Zayde Eliza Carpenter daughter of Daniel and Zayde Carpenter Born Thursday 11 May 1820 Died Feb 27th 1891 Note from the bible's current owner: This is one of three family bibles I received after my father's sister, Amanda Frances Haviland McCaw, died. She had been living in her father's house in Millville, NJ and he (Virgil Haviland) had apparently inherited all of them from his father, Girard P. Haviland. Daniel Carpenter is my 3 great grandfather. According to the History of Dutchess Co by J. H. Smith, p 442 and the Commemorative Biographical Record, p 21 his grandfather, Daniel Carpenter, for whom he apparently was named, came to Dutchess Co. from Long Island in 1752. He and his wife, Sarah Hall, lived in Crum Elbow, Hyde Park until his death in 1777. They had 6 children, one of whom, Benjamin, b. 11 July 1749, d. 17 Jan 1837, was the father of the owner of this bible. Benjamin lived in Crum Elbow on land given him by his father. He later purchased land in Stanford, where he died in 1837. He was a Patriot and was persecuted by the Tories for raising a company for the Colonial army. His home was robbed 3 times and on other occasions he was saved by his "immense greyhound". He married, 9 September 1773, Mary Pugsley, daughter of Samuel Pugsley of Westchester. They had 8 children. Their son, Daniel, owner of this family bible, resided in Amenia. He and his wife, Zayde PerLee Carpenter are buried in the Smithfield Burying Ground. Their son, Benjamin, and Tamma E. Huntting, had a daughter, Amanda Carpenter. Amanda married my great grandfather, Girard P. Haviland. See Girard P. Haviland family bible.   Ann Haviland Amadori

1710. Judge Morgan Carpenter

Number 981 on page 160 in the CARPENTER MEMORIAL.
Family on page 282 and 283 (# 339)  More info in book.
Ref:  Carpenter Chronicles, Vol. 23, 1995, page 9 BB Topp.  information taken
from The History of Dutchess County New York.
Morgan Carpenter was appointed by Governor Seward in 1841 "one of the County
Judges for Duchess Co." served one term of 4 years and declined a
re-appointment.  In 1852 he removed from Stanford (note there is a difference
in spelling of Stanford, Sanford for an earlier time?) where  he  had  lived
thus far, to the city of Poughkeepsie, In which he resided until his death.  As
a large landed proprietor he was energetic and enterprising in business
affairs.   His sterling integrity and high regard for principle  always
commanded respect.  His unusually sound judgment made him a most trusted
counselor, while a tender and sympathetic heart rendered him a kind friend a
revered parent.  A firm believer in the truths of revelation he exemplified
it's precepts in the uprightness of his life, and was ever a reverent attendant
upon the worship of the church and a Liberal contributor to it's support.
Thoroughly devoted to his country, in all questions of a public nature he took
a warm interest and on all such questions, whether pertaining to City, County,
State  or  Nation,  he  was always found advocating an honest and liberal
policy.  While as a member of the Whig and Republican parties, he was earnest
in the advocacy of political positions and on one or two occasions declined
nominations tendered him for important offices.  His ambition was not to hold
office, but to do his duty to  his
country and neighborhood to the best of his ability, and so through a long life
he acquired and retained the respect and esteem of all who knew him.
