William Carpenter was born ca 1804/05 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who he was named after, possibly after his Uncle William Davis.
William Carpenter is a proven son of Jacob Carpenter, as named in his Will of 1849.
William Carpenter married Elizabeth Wilson in 1831 in Burke (later Yancey) Co ,NC. See his own page for additional information on them. SEE:

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand nephew of William Carpenter.

William Carpenter was born ca 1804/05 in Burke County, NC in the Three Mile Creek area. This area became Yancey County in 1833, and Mitchell County in 1861, and finally, Avery County in 1911. William is a son of Jacob and Margaret Carpenter. William may have been named after his Uncle William Davis.

William was apparently home with his parents for the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census in Burke County.

William Carpenter married Elizabeth Wilson on 15 Nov 1831 in Burke (later Yancey) Co, NC. I'm not sure where I got this marriage date. I'm sure it was shared by another researcher, but I didn't document it for some reason. I don't know what proof there is that Elizabeth was a Wilson, but many researchers list her that way, and as a child of William Wilson and wife Elizabeth ---. I have not attempted to prove her parents. However, Jacob Carpenter reported the death of "Elizabeth Wilison" age 82 on Oct 20, 1842. He stated she was his grandmother, and "Wm Wilison" age 86 on July 30 1847 as his grandfather. He was but a small child when they died, and undoubtedly wrote this much later, but it seems likely he would have gotten their names right, and death dates right, though possibly not their ages.

Regarding the Wilson family, they were quite numerous in old Burke and Yancey County. In 1790, there was Edward, Ezekiel, George, Ginral (General?), Greenberry, 106-110, James, James, James, John, John, John, John Jr, Michal, Samuel, Thomas, and William. This is quite a few there early on. Though only one William Wilson was listed. This might be too early for this to be Elizabeth's father, assuming the information about her father being named William is correct.

In 1800 Burke, the Wilsons were just as numerous, including William Wilson (1774/84), with wife (1755/74), 2 daughters 10-15 (1784/90), and 1 son under 10 (1790/1800).

In 1810 Burke, there were still quite a few Wilson families (and "Willson") in Burke County, including one William Willson. This William was born ca 1765/84, and wife in the younger category (1784/94). He had three girls under 10, (1800/10), which could include daughter Elizabeth (c1803), if this is her family.

In 1820 Burke, there were again several Wilson families, including three Williams. The first, William (1794/1804) seem to be a newlywed, with a wife his same age, and no children. He did seem to be in the Three Mile Creek area. The next one, William (1775/94) had a large family, and seem to be in the area that later became McDowell County. He had one daughter, age 10-15 (1804/10), which doesn't quite fit for Elizabeth (c1803), but could be anyway. The last one was listed as William Wilson Esq (Esquire, probably meaning he was a Justice of the Peace, or a Constable). He was born 1775/94, and had no apparent wife, unless she was the oldest of three girls, one under 10 (1810/20), one 10-15 (1804/10) and one 16-25 (1794/1804). My belief, is that this oldest girl was our Elizabeth Wilson (c1803), and that this William's wife must have died between 1810 and 1820. This all depends on William actually being Elizabeth's father, for which I have no proof.

In 1830 Burke, there were numerous Wilson families still, including two Williams. The first one was born ca 1780/90, with wife, or mother (1760/70) with him. He had no other females in his household, so this doesn't seem to be ours. The other William, listed as William "Sr" was obviously the same one from 1820 who appeared to be widowed then. In 1830 he was age 60-69, born ca 1760/70, with one female age 15-19 (1810/15), and one male the same age.

The above shows that although this elder William Wilson (1760/70) did have a daughter, approximately Elizabeth's age (c1803), she was not still with him in 1830. Since she didn't marry William Carpenter until 1831, this is suspicious. Though at her age, she certainly could have been residing with a married sibling somewhere. Was she not the daughter of "William and Elizabeth Wilson" as other researchers show? "Uncle Jake" Carpenter stated in his Diary that Elizabeth Wilson died 1842, and she was his grandmother, and that William Wilson died in 1847 and was his grandfather. However, it has been difficult to reconcile this with census records. Though it certainly can be correct.

In 1840 Yancey, there were four William Wilson's listed, including William Sr age 50-59 (c1780/90) wife wife the same age, and a William (1800/10), and a William (1790/1800) and a William A. Wilson (1810/20). Of these, only William Sr even comes close in age to be the father of Elizabeth. Of course, Elizabeth was married by 1840, so no longer with her parents.

Checking all other Wilsons in 1830 Burke, I find only a couple with a girl Elizabeth's age. She would have still been single, presumably at home, and been approximately 27 years old, so in the 20-29 age group. James Wilson (c1760/70) had one apparent daughter this age. Robert Wilson (1780/90) had one apparent daughter this age. Thomas Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but it was probably his own wife instead. John Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. Robert Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. Joseph Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. Jesse Wilson Sr (1780/90) had an apparent daughter her age with him. Samuel Wilson (1800/10) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. James Wilson (1810/15) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse.

Disregarding other evidence, the 1830 census only shows James Wilson (1760/70), Robert Wilson (1780/90), and Jesse Wilson Sr (1780/90) as prime candidates to be Elizabeth's father. This ignores the fact that Elizabeth could easily have been away from home then.

Anyway, I'll leave Elizabeth as a child of William (d 1847) and Elizabeth (d 1842) until other evidence confirms, or refutes this. Now back to the Carpenter family study.

On 28 Dec 1836, William Carpenter received a State land grant for 50 acres in Yancey County on North East side of Doe Hill adjoining Jacob Carpenter (his father) and William C. Carpenter (himself? Or someone else?). (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 196 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).

William Carpenter was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County not too far from his brother David and not too far from his father Jacob.

William Carpenter was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 250 acres, valued at $125, and he had one white poll (himself), and his tax was $2.12 1/2. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8,  October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

William's 250 acres (as of 1840) is not all accounted for. I found a 50 acre land grant to him in 1836, but no other records (so far). That leaves 200 more acres yet unaccounted for.

William Carpenter was listed on the 1841 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Swan's Company. He was taxed for 250 acres (same as in 1840), valued at $150, and he had one white poll (himself). (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9,  November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

In the Spring 1848 term of Yancey County Court, the Valuations of Yancey County lands were all reduced  by 33 1/3 cent per acre. William Carpenter was listed in North Toe River District with his land of $300 reduced to $200. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 6,  August 1990, "Yancey County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes to Spring Term 1848" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

William was named as a son in his father Jacob's Will of 8 Sep 1849 in Yancey County.

For the 1850 census, William and family were listed just three houses from his parents, and near several siblings.

William Carpenter died in Mitchell County on 15 Nov 1881. His son Jacob wrote of his death in his "Anthology of Death":

"William Carpenter age 76 dide nov 15 1881. Wars fine honter, cil bare and wolves by 100 der by 100."

Elizabeth Wilson Carpenter died in Mitchell County on 21 Jul 1886. For some reason, her son Jacob didn't mention her death.

I'm not sure where William and Elizabeth are buried.

Levi Turner Carpenter was born ca 1839/40 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).

Levi was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census, and was with them in 1850 and 1860.

Levi served in Civil War for the Confederacy and was killed 5 Nov 1861. This death date was reported in the Civil War records, however, his brother Jacob recorded it as 10 Nov 1862:

Levi Carpenter married Catherine Dillinger  ca 1838 in Yancey Co ,NC. See his own page for additional information on them.

COMMENT:
Many genelogies has Elizabeth Keener (Kier) as a spouse also. And children have minimal name similarities and different birth years.  And unless Levi was into multiple big families, one is wrong. My guess is a merge issue with two Levi Carpenters. But, who is who is unknown. Need research and maybe Y-DNA testing to figure this out.  JRC

26079. Elizabeth Carpenter

http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-jacob-yancey.htm
Elizabeth Carpenter was born ca 1820/21 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I suspect she was named after her grandmother, Elizabeth Miller Carpenter.
Elizabeth was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census in Burke Co, NC.
Elizabeth Carpenter married Martin D. Wiseman ca 1838 in Yancey Co, NC. Martin was born ca 1818 in Burke County. Other researchers show him as a child of Bedford Wiseman (1799) and Mary Jennings. And Bedford as a child of William Wiseman (1739-1830) and Lydia Bedford.
Regarding the early Wiseman family, I found a Thomas and William Wiseman listed in Burke on the 1790 census.
In 1800 Burke, there were several Wisemans listed, including two William's and a Martin Wiseman (probably the namesake of our Martin D. Wiseman). Neither William seemed the same age as William (1739), but only one of the Williams had a son under 10 (born 1790/1800, which could be Bedford Wiseman (1799). Martin Wiseman had two sons that age.
In 1810 Burke, there were several Wiseman listings, including apparent widow Ann Wiseman, just three houses from Jacob Carpenter, and also William Sr (bef 1765) on the next page. He had one son age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800, so that must be Bedford (1799). There was another William Wiseman (1765/84) several pages away.
In 1820 Burke, Bedford Wiseman was listed, with 2 boys under 10, born ca 1810/20, one of which was son Martin D. Wiseman. Bedford's supposed father, William Wiseman was several pages away, but two houses from Jacob Carpenter. These were the only two Wiseman listings in Burke in 1820.
In 1830 Burke, Bedford Wiseman was listed in the Three Mile Creek area. A few houses away was Alexander Wiseman, a possible sibling of his. Bedford had two boys age 10-15, born ca 1815/20 with him, one of which was probably son Martin D. Wiseman. Bedford and Alexander were the only Wiseman's listed in 1830 Burke.
Yancey County was formed in 1833 from Burke, including where the Carpenter and Wiseman families lived.
Martin Wiseman was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC. They were next to Elizabeth's brother Samuel Carpenter. Other Wisemans listed in 1840 included Josiah, Alexander, William, Bedford (Martin's father, just a few houses from him) and "Center" Wiseman.

1 Female(s) 15-19      (1820-1825) Elizabeth CARPENTER Wiseman (1810/21) wife
On 8 Sep 1849, Elizabeth's father made his Will in Yancey County. He named her among his daughters as "Elizabeth Wiseman".
Martin and Elizabeth were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County. They weren't listed near any of Elizabeth's family, but probably not too far from them. There were numerous other Wisemans in 1850 Yancey County as well, including Martin's parents Bedford and Mary Wiseman. Their next door neighbors were Benjamin Gilbert <../gilbert/gilbert-wilson-yancey.htm> and Jesse Blalock. There were two laborers residing with the Wisemans, a James Taylor, 36, and William Gaddy, 30.

26080. Nancy Emaline Carpenter

http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-jacob-yancey.htm
Nancy E. Carpenter was born ca 1821/22 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who she might have been named after, if anyone.
Nancy was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census in Burke County.
Nancy married a Mr. Franklin per her father's Will (1849). I found two Nancy Franklin's in the 1850 census, one born ca 1827 married to James M. Franklin. They were listed next to David Carpenter, so at first I assumed this was Nancy Carpenter. However, other researchers tell me that Nancy Carpenter married John S. Franklin and not James M. Franklin, so this must be a different Nancy. However, I've not seen proof either way, but certain evidence (and other researchers) make Nancy, wife of John, seem the more likely one.
Nancy married John Sewell Franklin before 1839 in Yancey Co, NC. John was born ca 1818. I don't know who his parents were.
Concerning the Franklin family, I found a John Franklin Sr and Jr in 1790 Burke County.
In 1800 Burke, there was John Franklin (bef 1755), John (1755/74), Jonathan (1755/74) and Moses Franklin (1755/74).
In 1810 Burke, there was John (bef 1765), Jonathan (1765/84), John Sr (bef 1765) all next to each other, and near them was Moses Franklin (1765/84). Several pages away was another John (bef 1765), and a few more pages away was Samuel (1765/84).
In 1820 Burke, there were several still, including John (bef 1775) and Samuel (1775/94) near each other; both of whom each had 2 sons under 10, born ca 1810/20, which could be John Sewell Franklin (c1818). Several pages away was apparent widow Phebe Franklin (bef 1775); several more pages away was David Franklin (1794/1804), and on the next page was Lewis Franklin (bef 1775).
Of all those in 1820, only three had sons under 10 (born ca 1810/20), and they were John, Samuel and Lewis. One of those may be John Sewell Franklin's father.
In 1830 Burke, there were several Franklins again. I'll only list those that had a male child about John Sewell Franklins age. Samuel Franklin (1770/80) had one son age 10-15, or born ca 1815/20. John Franklin (1760/70) had two sons in that age group. David Franklin (1800/10) had one son that age.
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from Burke, including where the Carpenters and several of the Franklin families resided, though several Franklin families were still within Burke County for the 1840 census. I've ignored them for the time being.
In 1840 Yancey, there was John (Sewell) Franklin next door to his father-in-law Jacob Carpenter. Samuel Franklin (1770/80) was near by. That may make him the prime candidate for John's father. However, Samuel, in 1840, had an apparent son age 20-29 with him, and in 1830 only had one child in the corresponding age group (10-15), which if John, should be gone by 1840.
1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census <../reference/1840.htm>)
1840 Yancey County, NC pg 269 John Franklin 1000100000000-0000100000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29        (1810-1820) John S. FRANKLIN (1817/18)
1 Male(s) 0-4          (1835-1840) Gabriel FRANKLIN (1838/39) son
1 Female(s) 20-29      (1810-1820) Nancy E. CARPENTER Franklin (1821/22) wife
John Franklin was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 25 acres, valued at $12, and he had one white poll (himself), and his tax was $1.56. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8, October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
"Nancy Franklin" was named in Jacob Carpenter's 1849 Will as his daughter.
John and Nancy were in Watauga County for the 1850 census. Isaac Franklin, age 47 and Isaac Franklin age 45 were both 5 and 6 houses away. One could be John's brother.

26081. Mary Carpenter

http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-jacob-yancey.htm
Mary Carpenter was born 15 Feb 1826 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. She was probably named for her Aunt Mary Carpenter Roten .
Mary was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.
Mary married Joseph McKinley Cuthbertson sometime before 1846 in Yancey Co, NC.
Other researchers show that Joseph Cuthbertson was a son of Thomas (1776-1829) and Martha Cuthbertson. I don't know Martha's maiden name. Thomas was a son of William Cuthbertson (1740/50) and Rachel Montieth (1740/50).
Regarding the Cuthbertson family, I found none in Burke County in 1790, unless David "Culbertson" was actually a Cuthbertson. I have seen the name misspelled that way several times.
In 1800, there was a "William Culberson" in Burke. This is probably William Cuthbertson (1740/50), father of Thomas (1776). He had one male in Thomas' age group, age 16-25, or born ca 1774/84.
In 1810, there was "William Culberson" in Burke. This was William (1740/50). He had no one Thomas' age with him, but since Thomas was about 34 years old then, he may have been on his on somewhere else.
In 1820, William and son David were listed near each other in Burke, William Cuthbertson Jr (probably a son of William Sr?) was several pages away, and several more pages away was Thomas Cuthbertson. As best I can tell, all were in the section of Burke County that later became McDowell County. Thomas Cuthbertson had one son under 10, born ca 1810/20, which was probably Joseph M. Cuthbertson (1818).
In 1830 Burke, there was William Cuthbertson (1780/90), William Sr (1740/50), and widow Martha (1780/90), and David (1780/90). Martha was the widow of Thomas Cuthbertson. She had three sons, one under 5 (born ca 1825/30), one 5 to 9 (ca 1820/25) and one 15-19 (ca 1810/15). None of these are a perfect match for her son Joseph M. Cuthbertson (1818), but I suspect he was the age 15-19 one, just enumerated in the wrong column. Either that, or the researchers who have concluded that Joseph was a son of Thomas and Martha were incorrect about it. William (Jr) and David both, in 1830, had sons in Joseph's age group. Could one of them be his parents instead? All of these were in the part of Burke that later became McDowell County.
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from part of Burke, taking the area where the Carpenter family lived. However, the Cuthbertsons mostly remained in Burke (until McDowell was formed).
The 1840 census for Yancey shows only Nathaniel Cuthbertson (1810/20). The bulk of the family was in Burke still, including widow Martha Cuthbertson, who once again did not have anyone exactly Joseph's age with her. He would have been 21 or 22 in 1840, and she only had one male 10-14 (1825/30), and one 15-19 (born 1820/25). Unless this older one was Joseph, then he wasn't home. At his age, he could have been residing elsewhere as a laborer or something. Of the other Cuthbertson households in 1840, Nathan, (next door to Martha) had someone in their 20's living with them. Nathan had one male 20-29 (1810/20), and one male 40-49 (1790/1800), which was presumably Nathan himself. This could be Joseph residing with him. David Cuthbertson also had a male in his 20's with him.
So anyway, Joseph married Mary Carpenter prior to 1846, presumably in Yancey County, where she resided, though they probably went back to McDowell County right away.
"Mary Cuthbertson" was named in her father Jacob Carpenter's 1849 Will.
Joseph and Mary were in McDowell County for the 1850 census, just a few pages from her sister Sophia English.

26082. Frances Matilda "Matilda" Carpenter

http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-jacob-yancey.htm
Frances Matilda Carpenter was born 9 Dec 1828 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. She was probably named in part, after her Aunt Frances Carpenter Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-william.htm>.
Frances was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.
She married Leander Pyatte before 1848 in Yancey Co, NC.
Other researchers show Leander Pyatte to be a child of Joseph Pyatte Jr (1790-1864) and Jean Brooks. Joseph is a son of Joseph Sr (1755-1838) and Sarah Jane Still. "Pyatte" is often spelled "Pyatt", "Piett", etc in records.
Regarding the Pyatte family, I found none listed in Burke County, NC on the 1790 census, unless badly misspelled.
In 1800 Burke, Joseph Piett or Puett (1755) was listed.
In 1810 Burke, Joseph Pyett was listed, as were several named "Puitt".
In 1820 Burke, several were listed, including Joseph "Piett" and Joseph Jr. These two, and the others, all seem to be in the area of Burke that later became McDowell County.
In 1830 Burke, Joseph Pyett Jr was listed in the Three Mile Creek area near the Carpenter family. He had two sons under 5, born ca 1825/30, one of which must be son Leander Pyatte (c1826).
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from Burke, including where the Carpenter family resided, and some of the Pyattes. Most of the Pyatte family was in the section that remained Burke, until later becoming McDowell County.
In 1840 Yancey, Joseph Pyatte (Jr) was the only one listed, and he was just a few houses from Jacob Carpenter. Joseph had one son age 10-14, born ca 1825/30 which must be son Leander (c1826).
Leander Pyatte married Frances Matilda Carpenter before 1848 in Yancey County.
"Frances M. Pyatte" was named in the Will of her father Jacob Carpenter in 1849.
Leander and Frances were listed next to her parents on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC. Leander's parents were just two pages away.

Leander Pyatte was killed during the Civil War on 10 Feb 1863. His death was mentioned by his nephew Jacob Carpenter (1833) in his "Anthology of Death ":
"Lander Pyatte age 40 dide Feb 10 1863. Wars fine man. Dide in ware."
I don't yet have Frances' listing for the 1870 census.
On 15 Apr 1877, Frances Carpenter Pyatte married William Vance in Mitchell Co, NC. William was a son of John Vance and Elizabeth Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-william.htm>. Their marriage record gave them as "William Vance", parents left blank, and "Matilda Pyatt", parents blank, married by L. D. Vance, JP. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 4, June 1991, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1889" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)
I don't have the 1880 or 1900 census listings for them yet.

Avery County Heritage Biographies, Genealogies, and Church Histories, Vol
2, p 221:
Leander Pyatte, b 1826 or 1827, oldest son of Joseph, Jr., and granson of Joseph Pyatte, Sr., a Revolutionary war soldier, was reared on a farm near Spear, North Carolina, where Joseph, Jr. and his wife Jane lived and where they are buried in the Dick Wisean Cemetery on Pyatte's Creek. It
is interesting to note that Leander, about whom the least is known and whose grave has never been identified, is the one who gave the most fame to the name Pyatte. It was for him the settlement (town) of Pyatte, N.C. was named and a post office established. The community is still identirfied by that name. (See Pyatt family of Western North Carolina by
Martha Pyatte.)
--
Leander died in the Civil War; he was suffering from a fever.
p 222:
Many efforts have been made to locate the grave of Leander, but thus far without success. Stories handed down are at variance causing difficulty
in narrowing the search. Jane's children thought he was buried in Tennessee; another, Indiana; still others, Alabama or Georgia. It is not even agred which side he fought on. It is certain that he was taken against his will as he had been hiding out in Pyatte's laurels when he
slipped in one night to repair the children's shoes. Soldiers who were watching the house took him by force. He told Tilda that he would not live long as he was suffering from fever.
His homeplace marker was placed in remembrance June of 1978 before the Pyatte reunion.
