26683. John Edgar Carpenter

Information was obtained from:  "FAMILY RECORD of the Carpenter Family " published in 1947.  Correspondence from grandchildren stated that he helped put the above document together.  Genealogical Society in Marshall, Clark, IL, verified John's marriage and also his burial place as Ohio Cem., and it was verified.  Prairie Directory of Clark , IL states,  "John E. Carpenter and Florence Kincaid settled in Melrose Twp., Sec. 4 . . .owned 230 acres in 1876." Death records and his and others' obituaries were also used.   John Edgar Carpenter had a very large family and he lived to be 99 yrs. old.  He lived in Marshall, Clark, IL according to other obituaries in 1950 and 1952.

Florence Effie Kincaid

Settled in Melrose Twp. Sec. 4, owned 230 acres in 1876. (See husband's notes).   Florence's father spelled his name Kinkead. She was almost 68.  Death and burial records were verified in the Genealogical Society Records in Marshall, Clark, IL.  Her tombstone in the cemetery says "Flora".

35151. Oscar Orion Carpenter

Never Married.  He was 76 when he died.  He was listed as "of Marshall" in 1972.

35156. Truman Daniel Carpenter

Verified birth in Clark  records it said he was born 2 Apr 1909.   His tombstone said, Freeman Daniel and b. 1 May 1909, but relatives said it was Truman Daniel, b. 2 May 1909.  In 1992, the tombstone was unreadable.  He died in infancy.

35159. Donald Forest Carpenter

No children.  Prarie Farmer Directory of Clark  IL gave the names of the 2nd and 3rd wives.

26684. James Armstrong Carpenter

Birth date also recorded as 3 Feb 1868.  James was 39 at death, and had 6 children. His son, Ben, gave information about him in a personal interview in Marshall, IL in 1981.  Genealogical Library in Marshall, IL, had the record for father and mother and Alta May.  It said, "3 graves with identical flowers and no markers."  These would have been Hilda Faye, Alta Mae and Hester Ethel, three of James's children.

His son, Ben, may have been instrumental in seeing that a tombstone was erected for John McNair Carpenter and Phebe Ellen Griffing, parents of James. When he was interviewed in 1981, he was told no tombstone could be found for John or Phebe, and a few years later a large new stone is in the Cem. close to James'.

Flora Alice Beauchamp

Fora Alice was 37y 6m 28d when she died.  Verified in Clark  records. Two death dates have been recorded. one said 7 as the day the other said 17 Jan 1920.  We have a picture of Flora Alice with her daughters Hilda, Alta and Ruth.

35160. Benjamin Franklin Carpenter

Ben had no children of his own.  Ben was interviewed in 1981 in Marshall, Clark, IL  and was helpful in giving information about the family. When he was told there was no headstone for John McNair Carpenter and Phebe Ellen Griffing in the Ohio Cem., he said, "I know they were buried there, I was there."  Soon there was a very nice tombstone, and maybe he put it there.  Ben was 83 when he died, which was a few months after the interview.

Ben F. Carpenter:  Marshall, [Illinois] Nov. 18, 1981. Ben F. Carpenter, 83, died Wednesday Morning at the Paris Community Hospital.   Funersl services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Marrs-Snyder Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Volkers officiating.  Burial will follow in Marshall Cem..  . .Mr. Carpenter was born Nov. 3, 1898, in Clark County.  Surviving are his wife, Mary, a step-son Morris Crumrin of Terre Haute, Indiana, and a sister Ruth Ellis of Ridge Farm.

35162. Alta Mae Carpenter

Single d. age 19y 8d  It was Christmas day when she died.  County record said she was b. 1903, which would make her a twin to Hilda Faye, but she could not have been 19 at death if this was the case.  It is believed that Ben was thinking of Hilda Faye's birth year when he gave the death information. Although the names rhyme, it is not believe they were twins.  Genealogical Society Records in Marshal, Clark, IL, had Cem. records for father and mother and Alta Mae.

35163. Hilda Faye Carpenter

Single d. in 1919, she was 15y 1m 3d when she died.  Validated in the Clark  records. One record gave birth as 18 Dec, the other the 17th. Death dates also varied, one the 20 of Jan, the other the 25 of Jan.

35164. Hester Ethel Carpenter

Age at death 1y 3m 23d.  Verified birth record in Clark  records.

26687. Mary Ellen Carpenter

Orville Morecroft Brewster was a foster son.  Mary Ellen's sister, Eunice, gave Mary's birth place in a letter. Mary was 89.  Obituaries of others place her in Marshall, Clark, IL in 1950 & 1952.

Cyrus S. Brewster

"FAMILY RECORD of the Carpenter Family" pub. in 1947.  Eliza Jane Brewster, mother to Cyrus, married , Zackary Chambers whose son, Silas Silvester Chambers married Lucy Ethel Carpenter, daughter of John Edgar Carpenter and Florence Effie Kincaid.

Tombstone of Cyrus says 1866-1952.  There are other Brewster's in the Ohio Cem., but at this time we know only Cyrus' mother, she was Eliza Jane Brewster.  He was about 6 years old when Eliza Jane married Zackariah Taylor Chambers.

1900 U.S.Census of Clark , IL, Cyrus and Mary are listed.  It gave birth month and place for Cyrus.

35166. Orville Morecroft Brewster

Foster son to Mary and Cyrus Brewster.

26688. Leroy Freemont Carpenter

1900 U. S. Census, Watson Twp., Effingham , IL. ED92, Sheet 8, Line 57 Film 1243044. Census taken 13 June 1900, Carpenter, Leroy F. Carpenter, b. Oct 1878 age 21, b. IL enumerated with Joseph L. MO.  He was the only LeRoy in IL in 1920 with the approximate age, however the birth places of his parents do not match known facts.  This should be researched further.   One other LeRoy Carpenter in the state  was only 32.  Our LeRoy F. Carpenter would be at least 41 or 42 by this time.  The census taker could have written that age wrong.

LeRoy F. lived in Chrisman, IL for years. He was in a rest home in Marshall, IL at the time of his death. He has three step-daughters he raised, Myra, Thelma and Gertie Bryant, besides his own two sons and two daughters.  Gertie Bryant Saults, his step-daughter, confirmed that Minnie Flowers was his first wife.  She said they had a small infant that died. (This should be verified, as we found a daughter on the census and have a picture of a girl who evidently grew up.) There were no children by second wife, and his third wife was Roda and she had a daughter Sarah, she thought that was the daughter's name.  She said Roda and Sarah were both dead now (1980).  At one time the name Maude was given so her name could have been Sarah Maude, or Maude Sarah.   Nellie Mae BLAKENEY (Bryant) was LeRoy Freemont Carpenter's fourth wife.

Obituary:  LeRoy F. Carpenter, Chrisman, Illinois.  Leroy Freemont Carpenter, 85, a resident of Chrisman, died at the Burnsides Home, Marshall, at 5:22 p.m.  Tuesdy.  Mr. Carpenter had been a resident at the home for four months, and had lived in Chrisman for 20 years.     Mr. Carpenter was born Oct. 24, 1878, at Marshall, the son of John and Phoebe Griffin [Griffing] Carpenter.  He was married to the former Nellie May Blackney who preceded him in death Nov. 4, 1963.     Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Saults of Dana, Indiana; Mrs. Myra Sheldon of Bloomington, Illinois, Mrs. Luellen Newman of Fithian; Mrs. Gladys Sydes of Congersville, IL; and Mrs. Thelma Bryant of Santa Monica, Calif., two sons, Lyman Carpenter of Bemont, Tex., and Leroy Carpenter of Saloam, Ark; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Brewster, also a resident of the Burnsides Home; and Mrs. Eunice Jackson of Marshall; and a brother, John Carpenter of Marshall.  The body has been taken to the Scott Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m Friday with Rev. Garnett Mitchell of the Chrisman Nazarene Church officiating.  Burial will be in Woodland Cem..

It is because the pamphlet "FAMILY RECORD of the Carpenter Family" was, in 1948, given to Donna Ione Harris Carpenter and LeRoy Cephas Carpenter for their two daughters Terilee and Carol Lynn Carpenter, that this search for the origin of the Carpenter family began (Donna later was Donna Hellewell).  Mrs. LeRoy Freemont Carpenter (Nellie Mae) gave the pamphlet to her son and his family.   Great effort has been made to perserve and expand this record for descendants now and for generations yet to come.

Minnie Flowers

1900 U.S. Cenus, Watson Twp., Effingham, IL, ED 92, Sheet 8, Line 87,  Carpenter, Leroy F. b. Oct 1878, age 21, md. l yr., b. IL, Mother b. IL, Father b. NY. farm laborer, Minnie, 17,  b. Sept 1882, b. IL, Father b. Ohio, Mother b. IN, Md. 1 yr.,: Edith, daughter, b. Apr 1900, age 1/12.

44, b. Missouri.  He was the only LeRoy in IL in 1920 with the
approximate age.  No children.

Rhoda

In a conversation with LeRoy F. Carpenter's step daughter, Gertie Saults, she mentioned a Maude.  It was not remembered whether this was his wife or daughter. She did say he had one child by a former marriage, (probably Edith b. 1900 who grew to adulthood), and maybe one other that had died as a baby.  A Son, James, was reported from another source, but we do not know who is the mother of James.

Nellie Mae Blakeney

Her first husband was Robert Lee Bryant, father of Myra, Thelma and Gertie. Personal interview in 1949.  This started the research on this record.  See her husband's notes.  Nellie Mae's birthdate was verified by actual records in Courthouse, Vermilion, IL #4 - #10630, Birth Certif (#1 on file courthouse #13/208.    Marriage license Robert Lee - Nellie May Blakeney-Bryant located courthouse Vermilion, IL, Book 6-55 #23510.    Records of parents, Harriet Elizabeth and Harvey Blakney, Book 2, page 5.

Death certificate  - Robert Lee Bryant filed at Vermilion County, IL. #9072.

When married, LeRoy Fremont was of Danville, Illinois and Nellie Mae (Blakeney) Bryant was of Westville, Illinois.  Married 2 May 1923.

26689. Eunice Jane Carpenter

There is a stillborn child listed in the Clark  Records but the date was incomplete, with only 3 numerals for the year.  Cem. records give Millard as 5 days old, but the record sent by Eunice, herself, gave Millard's birth and death date as the same day.  Her other children that died young lived longer. In June 1993, Eunice's daughter Mildred said Carol was the still born child.

In other's obituaries Eunice is listed as living in Marshall, IL in 1950 and in Casey, IL in 1952. Eunice had a large family.  As of 1993, her grandchildren's records are almost complete.  She sent her own record, by a letter, in the late 1960's.  She corresponded many times and was very gracious.

Obituary: .  Marshall, Illinois    Mrs. Eunice Jackson,  88y23d,  died 14 June 1970.    A lifelong resident of Clark county, died at 11:20 p.m. Sunday at the Burnsides Nursing Home.  She is survived by a son, Leon, of Marshall, and five daughters, Mrs. Mary Davison, Martinsville, Mrs. Mabel McNair, Akron Ohio, and Mrs. Delpha Nicol, Mrs. Louis Clem, and Mrs. Mildred Williams, all of Marshall.  There are 20 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.    Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Marshall Missionary Baptist Church, . . .burial will be in Ohio Cem..

Perry E. Jackson

In Clark , IL death records,Perry E. Jackson's mother's,(Elizabeth's), death was recorded as, b. 9 Nov 1842 in IN d. 22 Jan 1920 in Anderson Twp., and is buried in Ohio Cem., Melrose Twp., Clark, IL.  It states she is the wife of Willis, and gives her parents as Wm. Amos and Polly A Tren/m or Atrem/n. (A recent record we saw [Feb. 2000] said her name was Polly A. Tree.)   Elizabeth was 72y 2 m 13d at death.

There is also a record for the death of Willis Jackson, listed as b. Shelby  IN, b. 26 Jan 1840 d. Anderson Twp., buried Ohio Cem., Melrose Twp., Clark, IL. 70y 5m 16d.  His father was William Jackson, Shelby , IN and mother Elizabeth Annex ("nn" not too clear), the informant for the information was Austin Jackson of West Union.  A death date was not copied, so none may have been given. Tombstone at Ohio Cem. gives 10 June 1910, 70y 4m 14d.  There is also a Robert Jackson a little ways away in the same Cem..

35175. Millard Jackson

In Ohio Cem. records it lists this child as 5 days old at death.  It also lists the year as 1900.  His sister, Mildred, said his death was the 28th of Feb. 1906, thus he would have been  5 days old as the Cem. record stated, but the year is 1906, not 1900.  He is listed as infant.

35178. Herschel Glenn Jackson

1y 5m 16d.

35179. Carol Jackson

Stillborn infant according to his sister, Mildred.

26691. Mary Lillian McNair

1860 U. S. Census Jasper, IL, there is a Mary age 1 with John H. McNair and Hannah Carpenter. so her birth year is 1859, as these are her parents. She was 74 when she died.  (See notes for her husband Henry Griffin Carpenter as to their prior relationship.) This is the same family in this record as Henry Griffin Carpenter.

Mary's father is listed as being born in Omer, IN, probably St. Omer, Decatur, IN.  The McNair's and Abner Carpenter family (John McNair Carpenter's father) lived in St. Omer, Decatur, IN. in the 1830's.

The Thomas McNair family (father to John) who md. Hannah Carpenter, is on the 1850 U.S. Census of Newton, Jasper, IL. Roll 110, Copy 452, page 272.  Film 007683.  Newton is also the town in IL. from which two of Hannah's brothers volunteered for service in the Civil War, Robert (gave his birth place as St. Omer, Decatur, IN) and Abner Carpenter (gave his birth place as Valpariso, Porter, IN).  Robert was killed, Abner lost an arm during the Civil War.

1860 U. S. Census Jasper , IL, there is a Mary age 1 with John H. McNair and Hannah Carpenter. so her birth year is 1859, as these are her parents. She was 74 when she died.  (See notes for her husband Henry Griffin Carpenter as to their prior relationship.)

Mary's father is listed as being born in Omer, Ind., probably St. Omer, Decatur, Ind.  The McNair's and Abner Carpenter family (John McNair Carpenter's father) lived in St. Omer, Decatur, Ind. in the 1830's.

Mary was the daughter of first cousins and Henry and Mary were first cousins also.  See husband's notes for their prior relationship.

Henry Griffin Carpenter

"FAMILY RECORD of the Carpenter Family", pub. in 1947.  Correspondence from Eunice Jane Carpenter, Henry's sister, and Miss Cox, granddaughter to Jane Carpenter, Abner Carpenter's daughter and sister to Hannah.

Death records verified, which gave birth as IL.  Obituary said Henry was 92y 8d.  He moved with parents from IL to IN in 1863, then back to IL in 1876. This is the same family in this record as Mary Lillian McNair.

Henry's wife Mary was a daughter of first cousins, and Henry and Mary were first cousins also.  Rebecca McNair Carpenter (Henry's grandmother)  was a sister to Mary Lillian McNair's grandfather, Thomas McNair.  Henry's father, John McNair Carpenter, was a brother to Mary's mother Hannah Carpenter (who married John H. McNair).  Henry's grandmother, Rebecca McNair Carpenter's mother was Hannah Allen, who married John McNair Jr.  She was blind.  Her father was Thomas Allen, mother Rebekah Allen (related by ancestors).   The Allen branch, in the McNair line, had many members of a family who were blind.  They were known as the "Blind Allen's".  This was caused by diabetes, although history records it differently.

Three of the children of Henry Griffin Carpenter were blind, and four of the children never married, two died young. Cause of blindness was diabetes, possibly an inherited trait.  Letter from Eunice Carpenter Jackson, daughter of John McNair and Phebe Ellen Griffing Carpenter, confirmed the diabetes as she described their illness in a letter to Blanche Cox, a descendant of Jane Carpenter Balding.  Jane was Abner Carpenter's daughter.  She wrote on Jan 3, 1969, " . . .tell you about Uncle Henry's girls.  They are all in the hospital but Emma . . .her and John are at home alone and have been for over a week.  The say they are getting along fine, but I am afraid they will get a fire but hope not.  Rhoda hasn't been at home to stay only one day since March and now she has both legs off above her knees for the Diabetes . . . and Mary has an awful sore toe . . .and Bessie has had pneumonia and her heart. . ."           A granddaughter, in 1994, has confirmed the inherited disease.

Births of Bessie Catherine, Frank Sylvester, Emma Ila, and Charles Allen were verified in the Clark  Records.  Obituary of Bessie's lists Frank of Chicago, Emma of Casey, Mary of Lincoln, and Charles of Greenup. Mary, Emma, John, Bessie, and Rhoda are all buried by parents in Marshall Cem., in Marshall, IL.  "There were children who died in infancy."  We do not know whose children, but it was probably Stella who died at age 2, and Irene Alma, less than 1 yr old.  These two were their first and last children.  Henry's obituary lists 4 granddaughters and 4 grandsons.  This does not agree with the record, but one of his sons had two foster children.

26692. John Abner McNair

McNair families were in St. Omar, Decatur, IN in 1830, Porter  IN in 1840, and Jasper Co. IL in 1850.

Eliza may have a nephew Fred Eaton b. 17 Jul 1887 & Bertha Eaton b. 16 Jan 1888 d. 26 Oct 1925.
