This is the same Joseph Henry that is buried by his parents, Fernando Carpenter & Helen Cook, in the Hillside Cem., [with no stone] in  Plainwell, Allegan, MI.  Cora is not buried there with him.

1910 U. S. Census, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo , MI, Vol. 43, Ed. 153,   # 151, Carpenter, Henry J. (Joseph), age 41, b. MI;  Cora B., age 30, b. MI;  md. 12 yrs.,  3 children and 3 living, Father b. MI, Mother b. NY; Harry L, son, b. MI, age 11; Helen L daughter, age 9, b. MI; Stanley, son age 3, b.MI.

Joseph was Henry of Kalamazoo in April 1919 in his brother's, Fred's,  obituary.

1920, We could not fine Henry or Cora on the Soundex for this census.

Joseph Henry (He went by Henry) was in Kalamazoo in 1947 according to the obituary of his sister Hattie Marie Carpenter Norton.

DEATH.  Allegan County Clerk, Allegan, MI,  Death Records: Book 11, page 216, Joseph Henry,  died 31 Dec 1948, 79y11m16d, in Plainwell, MI.  Born  15 Jan 1869, in Orangeville, MI; wife, Cora Carpenter, age 69, 614 John St., Kalamazoo, MI.  father: Fernando Carpenter, b. NY, mother: Helen Cook, b. Bath, NY. He died of Brochial Pneumonia.

Cem. Records of the Hillside Cem. from the Twp.  Office in Plainwell, Gun Plain Twp., Allegan, MI.   Fernando, his wife and mother, and some of his children are buried there.  Records were in the Twp. office and a visit was made to the Cem. in 1992. (Dates are dates of burial).  Carpenter, Almira  14 Apr 1888; Fernando, 26 June 1899; Helen, 18 May 1930; Joseph Henry, 3 Jan 1949; (death recorded in Allegan  had 31 Dec 1948-Mother Helen Cook b. Bath, NY.   Joseph Henry was 79y11m16d); Frank A., 26 Aug 1954; Nellie, 17 Dec 1962; Hugh 17 Mar 1986.(Behind Joseph Henry Carpenter in the doctor or Coroner column, it reads:  "Transfered Sept 23rd 1950 to Frank A. Carpenter").

A visit to the Cem. was made.  Their lot is S-7 near the main gate and not far from the road.  Tombstones: Fernando Carpenter, Nov 10, 1835 - June 26, 1897.  Next to him is Helen Carpenter, his wife, 1846-1930. Then one stone with two names:  Carpenter, Nellie 1883-1962, and Frank A. 1882-1954. Behind Fernando's is his mother, "Almira , wife of N. W. Carpenter b. 5 Sept 1810, d. 14 Apr 1888."  Next to her is an empty lot and next to that is Joseph Henry, according to Twp.  Records, but there is no stone.  Next one over, behind Nellie and Frank A's is:  Hugh D. Carpenter, Pvt. U.S. Army, WWII 1910-1986.  This is Frank and Nellie's son. Nathaniel does not appear to be buried here with his wife. This would explain the empty space next to Almira.

There is a different, but related, Henry (1900 U. S. Census) b. Mar 1860, age 40, b. MI; Sarah, wife, Oct 1865, age 34, b. MI and Bertie, son Feb 1887, age 13, b. MI. And on the 1920, U.S.Census,  Plainwell, Allegan, MI, Vol 2, Ed. 16, Sheet 4, Line 48. Carpenter, Henry, age 61, wife (not named, but Sarah C.), age 59, b. MI; Burton (adopted) son, age 32, b. MI.  This Henry is William Riley Carpenter and Polly Cronkhite's son, a cousin to Joseph Henry, son of Fernando Carpenter. William Riley and Fernando were brothers and sons of Nathaniel Carpenter and Almira Lewis.  These two Henrys are easy to confuse.

Cora B. Putnam

In 1900 census, she said she had had 1 child and 1 was still living.

In 1910 census,, she said she had given birth to 3 children and 3 were still living.

35311. Harry C. Carpenter

1900 U.S.Census, Plainwell, Allegan, MI.  Harry was 1 yr. old, and with his parents, Joseph Henry and Cora B. Puttman.

29 Mar 1899, Plainwell Enterprise (Newspaper), Plainwell, Allegan, MI p. 4, col 3.  Alamo.  Mr. and Mrs. Henry Carpenter are the parents of a son born March 20.  It is said to be William Jennings Bryan Carpenter by name.  This may be a coincidence, but the month and year were the same as the Harry C. we have in our records.  Maybe they changed their idea about his name, or this might be a child of another Henry Carpenter.

35312. Helen L. Carpenter

1910, U. S. Census, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI. Helen was 9 yrs. old and in the home of her parents, Joseph Henry Carpenter and Cora B. Puttman.

Need to find birth records in Allegan or Kalamazoo Counties.

1910 U. S. Census, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI. Stanley was 3 yrs. old and in the home of his parents, Joseph Henry Carpenter and Cora B. Puttman.

Need to find birth records in Allegan or Kalamazoo Counties.

I found Stanley Carpenter on the Social Security Death Index. He was born 22 Aug 1906. His Social Security card was issued in Ohio. He died in October 1974 in Tempe, Maricopa, Arizona.

35314. 4 Carpenter

1900 U. S.Census, Plainwell, Allegan, MI. Vol 2, Ed. 11, Sheet 12, Line 93. Son age 20.  Difficult to read the first name.  Further research showed it to be Charles.  He was with his mother, Helen.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.  Plainwell Enterprise,  24 Jun 1903, p.1 col.  2  Invitations have been issued for the marriage of Miss Marie Whiting, daughter of Mrs. Anna Whiting to Charles Carpenter of Plainwell, Wednesday, July 1, at the residence of the bride's mother in Douglas.  Kalamazoo Telegraph.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.  Plainwell Enterprise, 8 July 1903, p.1, col. 4. Whiting-Carpenter. Many guests including a number from away witnessed the marriage Wednesday evening of Miss Marie Whiting, daughter of Mrs. Anna Whiting, to Charles Carpenter of Plainwell at the residence of the bride's mother on Staple Avenue.  At half past eight o'clock Miss Clara Smith rendered Mendelssohn's wedding march and the bridal party marched into the parlor where the ceremony was preformed by the Rev. J. B. Pickard. An artistic arch of white entwined with satin with a brackground of June lilies, ferns and palms formed a pretty arrangement for the party.. Miss Janie VanStream and Thomas Hindman were maid of honor and best man . . . She has been employed in the Kalamazoo Corset Company and is a member of Kalamazoo lodge No. 220 L. O. T. M. The groom is a carpenter and highly respected in his home town and in this city where he has resided for the past year.  Kalamazoo Telegraph.

1910 U. S. Census, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI. Vol. 42 Ed. 138,      # 195.  Whiting, Anna, 45, b. Can/Eng.  parents same.  4 children 4 living; Ester, dau, 20, single, b. MI;  George L., son, 18, b. MI; Carpenter, Charlie C. son-in-law, age 30. md. 6 yrs,. b. MI, parents b. NY; Mary, dau of Anna, 25, lst mg,. 6 yrs., l child, l living, Raymond, grandson (of Anna), 5 yrs.

Charles was of Kalamazoo in April 1919 in his brother's (Fred's) obituary.

1920 U. S. Census, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI. Vol. 45, Ed. 156, Sheet 6, Line 20, Charles C. Carpenter, 40; wife, Mary M (Is it Mary Marie?  See wedding announcement), 34, b. MI; Raymond, son, 15, b. MI;  Rosenburg, Ruth, 31, Si I, (sister-in-law to Charles), b. MI. (This could make Ruth and Mary sisters, or Ruth could be the wife of Mary's brother. It could be Charles' brother's wife, but we know the names of his brother's wives, so it is not his brother's wife. Mary's mother was Mrs. Whitting, but she could have remarried.  This leaves only two possibilities, Mary's sister, or Mary's brother's wife.  Since we will assume Mrs. Whiting had not remarried, it would be Mary's sister. Possibly the one child missing of the family of 4 named by Mrs. Whiting.) This is the same family we found in 1910.  Finding the newspaper articles proves this is our Charles.

HI John. I saw that you posted a thread on Ancestry.com back in 2005 regarding an offspring of Fernando Carpenter. I was poking around family tree stuff online and saw the thread and thought you might be interested in another branch of the family. My Mother, Sandra Rae Ackemann (Carpenter)'s father was Raymond Carpenter,...son of Charles C. Carpenter of Plainwell MI. Charles being the brother of Henry and Frank. All above are now sadly deceased. I do have a great parlor picture of the Plainwell HS football team from 1896. with presumably Charles. My grandfather Raymond moved from Plainwell with his Parents I believe sometime in the 30's to Aberdeen WA, and from there moved to the SF Bay Area then Aptos in the 40's and 50's. Ray was a Contractor and furniture maker...really an artist w/wood. Ray had two daughters my mom and a sister Mary Kay. Mary Kay lives with her husband in Oceanside CA. Mary Kay had three kids who all live in the SF Bay area. Hope you found this interesting. Sincerely, Scott P. Ackemann, Felton, CA

The mother, Helen, and sons, Frank and his wife Mary (Nellie), Fred and his wife Elsa are all in this household.  Their names were so poorly written on the census, and rewritten to the Soundex incorrectly, that this entry was almost missed!  Example:  Fred looked like Frul, and that was what was copied to the Soundex.  Others were equally bad.

Frank was of Waterville, Canada in Apr 1919 in his brother's (Fred's) obituary.

1920.  Could not find them on a census., some census were hard to read. See Helen's documentation for her 1920 data.

OBITUARY.  Otsego Union, Otsego, MI, Thursday, Mar 3, 1904.  MRS. CLAUDE CARPENTER.  Mary V. Smith was born at Dowagiac, Cass county, July 18, 1867, and moved with her parents to this place in 1883, where she has since resided.  She was married to Claude Carpenter July 4, 1884, at the age of 17.  She is survived by her husband and one child and a father, three sisters and three brothers and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss.  She has been a great sufferer for the past four years with locomoter axia which has slowly taken her away.     Mrs. Carpenter was a bright an cheery lady, always having a pleasant word for every one.  Her sudden death is a shock to many as she had seemed apparently better until five weeks ago, when she was taken to her bed for the last time.  She was a patient sufferer to the last.  She died Feb. 29, at her home on West Kalamazoo St. The funeral was held from her home Wednesday at 2:30, Rev. Chas. L. Owens officiating.  Interment was made to Mountain Home Cem.. Those present at the funeral from out of town were:  Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mayhart of Mishawaka, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Coney, Nellie, Lottie and Freddie Coney of Allegan.    There were many floral offerings from friends.  The Otsego Chair Company, Otsego Fire Department, G. For these and other kindnesses the family wish to express thanks.

Witnesses: Abram Burnside of Otsego, MI and Mrs. Ella Burnside of Otsego, MI. C. P. Bates, Clergyman.

In other words, brother and sister married brother and sister.)

Need to search the Soundex for 1900 now we know her married name is Daniels.

One of her descendants sent us the information about Harriett Bell Carpenter's daughter Arvilla Daniels, father Homer Daniels, and Arvilla's descendants.

26773. Havillah Nathaniel Carpenter

Delayed birth registration:  Havillah filed a delayed birth registration because he was listed as a female at birth.    It reads:  "#239, Nov. 5, 1871 Carpenter, Havillah N., Male child, #7 of 7 children. b. Martin Twp.; father: Albert Dinia Carpenter, b. Steuben , NY;  mother: Mary Elizabeth Myers b. Cahugh Falls, Ohio.  Filed in County of Muskegon 5th day of Aug. 1940 by the probate judge."  This was also recorded in Allegan  records, because this was the county of his birth. We have not found a death record for Allie Daniels Carpenter in Allegan, Kalamazoo or Barry, but she probably died about 1900, or there may have been a divorce.   (Havillah remarried in 1900.  See 1910 Census.  His second wife was named Florence and they said they had been md. 9 yrs. They also have a son, Albert D., age 7.)

1900, U. S. Census, Boyne Falls Twp., Boyne Falls Village, Charlevoix, MI. taken 4 Jun 1900. 7623  Roll 706, page 48, E.D. 11 ED 13.  Household 73/75 Carpenter, Havillah, male b. 1910 U. S .Census, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI. Vol 43, Ed 150, Household #181.  Carpenter, Havillah N., 38, b. MI, md. 2nd time, 9 yrs. this mg. b. MI, father: b. NY, mother: b. MI; Florence, wife, age 33, b. MI. 2nd mg. also, she said she had 3 children and 2 were living. (This is the children she had and they may or may not been Havillah's.)  The child mentioned on this census is, Havillah's, however.  Albert D. age 7, son, b. MI. NY was a prisoner.  There was some numbers, not sure what they  meant. 15-5-9-7or 8.  He was #7901 on the page. The warden or guard was Louis Carl Ruthmiller.

1920 U. S. Census we found two possibilities.  I believe it is the first one because he gives his birth place as Penn.  However, even though the census were taken days apart, it is possible they are the same family even though there are a few descrepancies. His age should only be 50 or 51 if birth month and year was correct on the 1900 census. Lansing City, Ingrahm Co., MI. Soundex R-360 Vol 38, Ed. 93, Page 1 Line 95. Census taken: 29 Jan.. (Soundex)  A.C. Ryder,  age 53, b. Penn  father: b. NY;  mother : b. NY  Addie, wife, age 48, b. MI, parents both b. NY.  William, son, age 15, b. MI;. father b. Penn, mother, MI.   A C Ryder's occupation was a plasterer.  (If he had recently gotten out of prison, he may not have wanted to use his name, and used initials instead--backwards.  Lansing is not far from Ionia  where the prison was located.)

Second one: !1920 U. S. Census,  Otsego City, Allegan, MI.  Vol. 2, Ed. 30, Sheet 32, Line 25. Census taken 31 Jan & 2 Feb. .  Ryder, Clifton age 52, b. MI. parents both b. MI.  He is a mason by trade.  Addie, wife, age 48 b. MI, both parents b. MI. William, son, 15, b. MI. parents b. MI.  (All b. MI?)

Both of these census could be looked at again to see if it gave an occupation for Addie.  We know she was a dressmaker in 1910.

Which one is it in 1920? Or are they both the same family, taken twice? Further research is needed.

Addie’s middle name was Amelia.  Her husband’s name was alternately Archie Clifton and Clifton Archie.  He was son of Henry Nelson Ryder and Emeline Foy.

She and Clifton Ryder had a difficult marriage.  I’ve found several newspaper pieces about his being a chronic alcoholic and not able to support his family.  I took special interest because of two historic movements: the strength of the WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) and the woman suffrage movement.  I’ll attach a zip file with the newspaper pieces that tell the story.

In addition, Addie filed for divorce in Allegan county on 29 Jul 1916; the suit was dismissed 19 Jan 1918.

And despite all that, they share a stone at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan, MI.  She’s # 61723085 and he’s # 61723117.

Private First Class Harold Lloyd Carpenter, 19 017 738, Air Corps, United States Army was assigned to 4th Chemical (Aviation) Company, Fifth Air Force when captured 7 May 1942. He was reported missing from 23 May 1944 and declared officially dead from 7 September 1944 on 22 April 1945. No remains were ever recovered. There's a memorial inscription on the Tablets of the Missing, American Battle Monuments Commission Manila Cemetery at Fort Bonafacio, Luzon, Philippines.

I have very little on the 4th Chemical (Aviation) Company and nothing on Fifth Air Force (?) being stationed at Salt Lake City at any time during - or after - the war (Fifth Air Force was constituted and organized in the Philippines).

You can request his deceased file. You'll find practical instructions at Message #2112.
