Carl Mitchell worked for the New York Central railroad in Athens, and they began housekeeping in the Village of Athens after his marriage. Around 1904 Carl and Nina moved out to his father's and grandfather's farm on V Drive South and began farming. In 1907 the family moved to another farm southeast of Athens. Around 1909 the family moved to Bendon, Benzie County, MI. Farming was difficult in Benzie County so the family moved to Owosso where Carl worked. He did not like this work so in 1919 he moved back to Bendon. In 1920 the family moved to a farm in Wakeshma Twp.. They then lived on two other farms in the Athens area until moving to the Village of Athens in 1953. In 1966 they moved into nursing homes. (This information was received in 1997 from Carl's daughter, Emma Ahlene Doubleday. We believe Ahlene's son, Carl, prepared the information.)

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. Nov. 1952 (probably from the Athens Times.) Golden Wedding. Carl Carpenters to Celebrate Their Golden Anniversary on Nov. 11. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter of this place will observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary by holding open house for friends and neighbors next Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11 from 2 to 5, in their home north of the village. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter were married in Athens on Nov. 13, 1901, by the Rev. S. L. Runkle, and have spent most of their lives in this vicinity. They have six children: C. Roy Carpenter of Saranac; Wm. E. Carpenter of Athens; Mrs. Duane (Ahlene) Doubleday of East Leroy; Mrs. Clinton (Margaret) Stringham of Battle Creek; Mrs. Charles (Alice) Gallagher of Bedford; and Mrs. Herman (Maxine) Beaver of Detroit. They also have fourteen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. Nov. 1952 (probably from the Athens Times). TV Set for Anniversary Gift. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter, whose golden wedding anniversary took place yesterday, held open house Sunday afternoon for their friends and relatives. The guest book shows 62 registrations. The event was in charge of their daughters and sons and their wives and husbands, the ladies serving ice cream, cake and coffee, while the men folks installed a TV set, a gift from the family to Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter. Besides this, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter received many flowers, plants, gifts and cards as well as several telephone calls from some who were unable to call in person.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter were the guests of honor at a dinner given Sunday afternoon in the VFW Hall by their children and grandchildren. The occasion marked their 55th wedding anniversary which was Nov. 13th. Thirty-eight members of the family sat down to a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The tables were centered with bouquets of mums, one of which was a gift from the New Idea Club and the Ladies Guild of the Congregational Church, of which Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are members. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Carpenter and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Carpenter and daughter of Saranac, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Stringham and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Herm Beaver and two children, Mr. and Mrs. John Doubleday and three children, Mr. and Mrs. David Rench and daughter, all of Battle Creek, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gallagher and daughter of Bedford, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Doubleday and son of East Leroy, Mr. and Mrs. William Carpenter and two children, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Smith and three children of Athens, two granddaughters and their husbands were unable to attend.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter were guests of honor at a dinner given them Sunday by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Carpenter of Saranac, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Stringham, Mr. and Mrs. Herm Beaver, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gallagher, all of Battle Creek, Mr. and Mrs. William Carpenter of Athens and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Doubleday of East Leroy, at whose home they gathered. The occasion marked the fifty-ninth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter. Besides their six children, the Carpenters have fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. The Athens Times, Thursday, November 16, 1961. Observed 60th Wedding Day. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter quietly observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary this week at their home on North Clark street. They were married in Athens on Nov. 13, 1901 and except for eleven years spent in Northern Michigan, have always lived in this area. Mr. Carpenter was a farmer until his retirement about ten years ago. They are members of the IOOF and Rebekah Lodges in Athens and both belong to the Congregational Church where Mrs. Carpenter was an active worker until ill health forced her to curtail outside activities. Their anniversary was celebrated last August when their six children, 14 grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren were together for a reunion.

Athens - Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter of Athens, married 60 years, were honored Sunday at a potluck dinner held at the Emmett Twp. Community Building. Carl Carpenter, 80, a retired farmer and Nina (Webb) Carpenter, 76, were married in November, 1901, at the home of the bride's parents. They have made their home in or near Athens all of their married life with the exception of 11 years when they lived in Benzie County. Among the 57 guests present were the couple's six children, Roy Carpenter of Saranac, William of Athens, Mrs. Duane (Allene) Doubleday of East Leroy, Mrs. Herman (Maxine) Beaver, Mrs. Clinton (Margaret) Stringham and Mrs. Charles (Alice) Gallagher, all of Battle Creek. Color slides were shown of California by Clare Birman. The table was decorated with a centerpiece of artificial fall flowers.

Athens - Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter of Athens will observe their 64th wedding anniversary at a small gathering of family and close friends at their home on Saturday. The former Miss Nina Webb and Mr. Carpenter were married Nov. 13, 1901, and have spent most of their married life in the Athens area. Mr. Carpenter is a retired farmer. Mrs. Carpenter is a life member and past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge and a past president of District 24, and her husband is a life member and past noble grand of IOOF. Mrs. Carpenter is also active in the First Congregational Church of Athens. They have two sons, Roy of Saranac and William of Athens, and four daughters, Mrs. Duane Doubleday of East Leroy and Mrs. Clinton Stringham, Mrs. Charles Gallagher and Mrs. Herman Beaver, all of Battle Creek. There are 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

OBITUARY, Battle Creek Enquirer, Wed., March 19, 1975. Athens - Mrs. Nina (Webb) Carpenter, 90, died today in Provincial House, Marshall, where she had been a patient six years. She was born in Athens and was a resident here until her illness. She was a member of Athens Rebekah Lodge 24 and was past district president. She was a member of Athens Congregational Church. She was the widow of Carl Carpenter. Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Duane (Ahlene) Doubleday of East Leroy, Mrs. Clinton (Margaret) Stringham of Florida and Mrs. Charles (Alice) Gallagher and Mrs. Herman (Maxine) Beaver, both of Battle Creek; sons, Roy Carpenter of Saranac and William of Athens; 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. WEDDING. The Athens Times, Thursday, March 3, 1927. Another Double Wedding Sunday. Miss Ahlene Carpenter and Duane Doubleday, and Miss Margaret E. Carpenter and Paul W. Davis, well known young people in this vicinity, were the particpants in a double wedding ceremony performed at the residence of the officiating minister, Rev. F. A. Stephens, in this village Sunday afternoon. The two couples were unattended. Following the service Mr. and Mrs. Doubleday and Mr. and Mrs. Davis went to the home of the parents of the two brides, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter, where a delightful two-course luncheon was served, with only the members of the immediate families in attendance. Mr. and Mrs. Doubleday, the latter a graduate of Athens High School, will reside for the time being with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Doubleday, while Mrs. Doubleday completes the school year as teacher in the Seeley district. Mr. and Mrs. Davis, the former a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Davis of Athens, will reside at 15 Clark street, in Battle Creek. Friends of these young people join in congratulations and wishes for a happy and prosperous future.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. The Athens Times, Thursday, March 24, 1927. Sister Brides Were Complimented. Friends to the number of 75 gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carpenter Saturday evening, the event being a miscellaneous shower honoring Mr. and Mrs. Duane Doubleday and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Davis. Guests were present from Fulton, Athens, Climax and Leroy. The evening was spent with games and visiting. After refreshments were served, two large baskets were brought out, which contained many useful gifts of silver and china for the young couples, who received many kind wishes from their friends.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. The Athens Times, Thursday, March 24, 1927. The girls of the DeWitt Sister's feather flower shop in Battle Creek entertained Mrs. Paul Davis, formerly Miss Margaret Carpenter of Athens, at the home of Mrs. George Trato, in Battle Creek, Monday evening, Mar. 14. The affair was a miscellaneous shower. The evening was spent playing games. About 9:30 a shower of rain drops was carried in a large umbrella by Miss Ruth Myers. Mrs. Davis was requested to open the raindrops, revealing many beautiful and useful gifts. Refreshments were served in keeping with St. Patrick's day, the color scheme being green and white.
OBITUARY. Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Thursday, April 8, 1982. Margaret J. (Carpenter) Stringham, 73 of Treasure Island, Fla., wife of a retired Kellogg executive, Clinton A. Stringham, died Tuesday in Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, Fla. She had been a patient nine weeks and had been ill the past 2 1/2 years. She was born in Athens and resided in Battle Creek until moving to Florida 13 years ago. She was employed at Kellogg for several years. She was a member of the Pasadena Country Club in Florida and a former member of the Battle Creek Country Club. She is survived by her husband, Clinton A. Stringham, who retired in 1969 as plant manager of the Kellogg Also surviving are step-daughters, Mrs. Willard K. (Marti) Hall of 11199 3 1/2-Mile Road, and Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Harris of Pontiac; brothers, Roy Carpenter of Saranac, and William Carpenter of Athens; sisters, Mrs. Herman (Maxine) Beaver, Mrs. Ahlene Doubleday, and Mrs. Charles (Alice) Gallagher, all of Battle Creek. Clinton A. Stringham had two daughters, Mrs. Willard K. (Martha [Marti]) Hall, of Battle Creek, and Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Harris of Pontiac, MI. Since they are not blood relatives of the Carpenter line, family group sheets are not made. Clinton's daughter, Martha K., b. 12 Oct. 1941, was very young when Margaret and Clinton were married. Margaret raised Martha. Martha married first Edward Harvey in June 1961. They had two children, Jeffrey Clinton Harvey, born 11 Oct 1967 and Karin Kay Harvey, born 8 May 1970. Martha married second Willard Hall in April 1978.
OBITUARY. Battle Creek Enquirer, Sunday, July 31, 1994. Clinton A. Stringham, 90, of Battle Creek, a former general manager of Kellogg Co's. Battle Creek plant, died Saturday, July 30, 1994, in Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall after a brief ilness. He had been hospitalized since Thursday. He was born April 9, 1904, in Marshall to Charles C. and Mary I. (Thorpe) Stringham and came to Battle Creek from Marshall in the early 1920s. He entered the U.S. Army at the age of 16 in September 1920 and served until January 1921. Mr. Stringham joined Kellogg Co. in 1929, working in construction and then unloading, before becoming a foreman in 1937. In 1938, he became Shipping Division supervisor and was named Food Division Superintendent in 1949. Mr. Stringham was promoted to plant manager in 1955 and became general manager in 1966. He retired in 1969 after 40 years with the company. Mr. Stringham wintered several years in Florida before becoming a permanent resident of Treasure Island, Fla. in 1971. He returned to Battle Creek on June 1 to make his home with a daughter. He had been a professional skater with Tozer-Stringham & Walker at the Pastime Rink at Goguac Lake. His first marriage to Gracia Clark ended in divorce. He then married Mildred Beronja, who died in 1942, and Margaret Carpenter, who died in 1982. Surviving are daughters, Barbara Ann Harris of Detour Village and Martha K. Hall of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Ogden. Born in Athens, he moved to the Union City area in 1908 and was a Branch County farmer all his adult life. He moved from his farm to Union City in 1955. His wife, the former Hazel Huss, died in 1964. Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Victor (Nathalie) Allwardt and Mrs. Derwerd (Bernadine) Adolph of Union City; sons, Edwin L. and Robert J. of Union City; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Neva Parlin of Athens. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Spencer Funeral Home, Athens.

Funeral services were held at Spencer Funeral Home in Athens, Sunday for Edwin Carpenter Sr., 91, of 117 Calhoun Street, who died Thursday, December 20, at the Coldwater Community Health Center after a short illness. Rev. Walter Rothfuss was pastor in charge and burial took place in Burr Oak Cem.. Mr. Carpenter was born in Athens on March 12, 1882, the son of Thomas and Emma (Mitchell) Carpenter. He was married in July of 1907 to Hazel Huss. She preceded him in death on January 15, 1964. Moving from Athens to Union City in 1908, Mr. Carpenter farmed his entire life in Union Twp.. Eighteen years ago he moved to the village of Union City. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Victor (Nathalie) Allwardt and Mrs. Derward (Bernadine) Adolph, both of Union City; two sons, Edwin Jr. and Robert J., also of Union City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Neva Parlin of Athens. !Visit to Burr Oak Cem., Athens. A descendant, Robert Carpenter, was killed while serving in the Continental Army. His son, Robert, served in the War of 1812. This Robert's son, Calvin, brought his wife and fourteen children to Michigan from Middlesex, New York, settling on 40 acres west of Athens in 1859. Edwin C. Carpenter was born March 1882 in a log cabin on his grandfather's farm. In 1908 he brought his wife, Hazel, and baby daughter, Nathalie, from Athens to Union Twp. where he engaged in farming. Later he 'hired out' to Alfred Armstrong and moved his family to their tenant house where his second daughter, Bernadine, was born. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Armstrong sold the farm to John Nesbit, an employee of the Union City National Bank. Continuing to work the farm on a share basis for the new owner, Mr. Carpenter moved his family into the farm house and here his two sons, Edwin and Robert, were born. There was little farming equipment and livestock in those early years. As with most farmers then, nearly all food for the family table was produced on the farm. Mr. Carpenter acquired a good team of horses and supplemented the family income by logging for others in the winter and drawing gravel for the Twp. roads, which in those days were litte more than well-worn trails, often impassible during rainy weather. Over the years the small chicken flock increased to several hundred birds. Carloads of lambs and steers were brought from western ranges, pastured in summer, fed and fattened during the winter with grain grown on the farm, then sold in the early spring. Hog raising was added also. New buildings were erected and old ones were remodeled while more land was acquired. In 1928 a good herd of guernsey dairy cows was purchased in Wisconsin. Selling Grade A milk to the Michigan Milk Producers Association carried the farm through the depression years. At various times Mr. Carpenter served on the local rural schoolboard (Lincoln), Twp. board, and was a Justice of the Peace. Both he and Mrs. Carpenter were members of the Union Township Grange. The children attended the Lincoln School and graduated from the Union City High School. Nathalie taught her first three years at the Lincoln School with her two brothers among the students. In August 1954, a disastrous fire at the farm destroyed all but one barn and the house. Rebuilding with modern ideas, the first 'milking parlor' was installed in Union Twp.. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter left the farm for a new home they had built in Union City. Robert and his family moved to the farm house where they still reside. Mrs. Carpenter died in January 1964. When Mr. Carpenter's health began to fail, the farm was taken over by the sons. Later dairying and the raising of livestock was discontinued. Today the entire farm is under grain cultivation. Mr. Carpenter died in December 1973, at the age of 91 years. Nathalie married Victor Allwardt. They have a daughter, Elaine, and three grandsons. Bernadine also became a teacher. She married Derwerd Adolph. They have a daughter, Rebecca, deceased, and a son, Mark. Edwin graduated from Michigan State University and now owns a construction and gravel business. He married Kay Wilson. Robert continued farming with his father. He married Virginia Lily. They have two sons, Gail and Thomas, and a daughter, Judith. There are four grandchildren. Carpenter, 74, of 117 Calhoun St., Union City, died Wednesday evening at the Community Health Center in Coldwater where she had been a patient since Saturday. She had beein in poor health for several months. She was born in Saginaw, a daughter of Ambert and Ida (Scott) Huss. In 1907 she and Ed C. Carpenter were married in Athens. The couple have lived in the Union City area for 57 years, residing on a farm southwest of the city until moving into town about five years ago. Mrs. Carpenter is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Victor (Nathalie) Allwardt of Burlington Twp. and Mrs. Durward (Bernadine) Adolph of Union City; two sons, Edwin of Burlington Twp. and Robert of Union Twp. and six grandchildren.

For several years Mrs. Kline gave music lessons and she also worked for the R. M. Kellogg in Three Rivers. She was a member of the Community Church in Leonidas. She had been a lifelong resident of Athens and had been in ill health one year. She was the widow of Elon D. Parlin. Also surviving are another son, Dr. Merle Parlin of Kankakee, IL; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Spencer Funeral Home.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. The Athens Times, Thursday, January 1922. Thinks Gun was Tampered With. Elon Parlin Loses Finger When it Discharged. Elon D. Parlin, living two miles north of town, was the victim of an accidental shooting accident last Thursday forenoon in which he lost the little finger on his left hand and had the third finger somewhat mangled. Mr. Parlin had gone into his well house to get a can of lubricating oil for his automobile. Noticing that his double-barreled shotgun was lying flat on the floor, he picked it up with his finger over the barrels, being satisfied that it was not loaded, and as he set it down again in the corner the gun discharged, practically blowing off one finger, the balance of the load going into the roof, cutting one rafter nearly half in two. The strange part of the affair was that Mr. Parlin had broken the gun open a few days before and examined both barrels to see if it was loaded, before having placed it in the well house, but there were no shells in it. A box of shells stood on a shelf above the gun and it is evident that someone placed a shell in the weapon after it had been placed in the well house. It was indeed fortunate that the accident, although bad enough, was no worse, and Mr. Parlin shudders when he thinks of what might have happened had the gun been pointed toward him or had his little boy touched it. He effectively settled any future trouble with the shotgun, however, by giving it away the same day.
OBITUARY. Elon D. Parlin, 69, prominent farmer and lifelong resident of this community, died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 7, 1952, in the Three Rivers hospital, where he had been a patient for about two weeks. He was born May 6, 1883, in Athens, a twin son of C. A. and Clara (Jones) Parlin. He was married to Neva Carpenter on Nov. 28, 1910, who survives. He was a member of the Athens IOOF and of the Farm Bureau. Surviving in addition to the widow are two sons, Aaron of Fulton, and Dr. Merle Parlin, now serving with the army medical corps in France; three sisters, Mrs. Burr M. Converse of Athens, Mrs. Gertie Tuttle of Ceresco, and Mrs. Clark (Nellie) Burgett of Fairview, Ill., and two brothers, Dewitt and Fred, both of Athens. His twin brother, Everett I. Parlin, passed away a few years ago. Funeral services were held at the Spencer Funeral home Tuesday afternoon.

Chichester, of East Leroy, died at 4 a.m. today in Nichols Hospital, death resulting from a cerebral hemorrhage she suffered Wednesday evening in Athens where she had gone with her husband on a business trip. Mrs. Chichester had been in good health until the sudden illness which brought on her death. Born Dec. 30, 1874, in Athens Twp., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Carpenter, she was married 38 years ago to Mr. Chichester and had lived with him since that time on his East Leroy farm. She was a member of the Athens Hive of Maccabees. Surviving besides the husband are five sons, Raymond of Athens; Roland, Lee and Lyle of Battle Creek, and Roy at home; four daughters, Mrs. Roe Mitchell of East Leroy; Mrs. Wesley Harris of Wolcottville, Ind.; Mrs. Edwin Henker of Ceresco, and Mrs. Herbert Lucas, at home; one brother, L. OBITUARY. The Athens Times, Thursday, Sept. 17, 1959. Albert E. Chichester, 85, the father of Calhoun County Deputy Sheriff, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at his home at Pine Creek. He had been ill for one month. Mr. Chichester was born Feb. 2, 1874, in Kalamazoo County, a son of David and Hannah (Bishop) Chichester and had spent his life in the East Leroy area. He had lived on the same farm for over 50 years. He was a retired railroad car repairman for the Grand Trunk Railroad and had been farming here for a number of years. His wife, the former Minnie Carpenter, preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1938. Mr. Chichester was the last living member of the Athens Maccabee Lodge, which was formed around the turn of the century, and disbanded about 1938. He also was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Oddfellows Lodge at Athens. He is survived by five sons; Raymond of Athens, Calhoun County Deputy, Roy at home, Rolland of Marshall, Lee of Alma and Lyle of Battle Creek; four daughters: Mrs. Wesley (Marta) Harris of Wolcottville, Ind., Mrs. Roe (Opal) Mitchell of East Leroy, Mrs. Edwin (Thela) Henker of Athens R-1 and Mrs. William (Margaret) Schragg of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Scranlin of Indianapolis, Ind. and Mrs. Lena Cole of Woodlake, Calif. WEDDING. The Athens Times, Thursday, November 29, 1923. Miss Marta Chichester Weds Battle Creek Man. Wesley Harris, of Battle Creek, and Miss Marta Chichester, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Chichester of Pine Creek, were principals in a pretty wedding which took place at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home of the officiating minister, Rev. Wm. S. Potter. They were attended by Harold W. Martin and Miss Rose Buckner, both of Battle Creek. The bride wore a becoming gown of brown Canton crepe and her attendant blue crepe. Both carried pink carnations. The groom is employed by the Sherman Manufacturing Company and the newly married couple will begin housekeeping at once in Battle Creek.

(Chichester) Harris of Wolcottville, Indiana, she was born Oct. 21, 1900 to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Chichester of Athens Township. She is survived by three sisters and five brothers, Opel Mitchell and Thela Henker of East Leroy, Margaret Schragg of Burlington, Raymond of Athens, Roland of Marshall, Roy of East Leroy, Lee of Alma, Lyle of Battle Creek; also several nieces and nephews and cousins. She married Wesley Harris in November 1923 and moved to Wolcottville early in 1924. He passed away November 11, 1960. Funeral and burial took place on Sunday in Wolcottville at the Williams Funeral Home with Rev. Beaver officiating. Interment Wolcottville.

He had been ill nine years. He was born in Athens and lived in the Pine Creek area until coming to Battle Creek in 1979. He was employed by H.B. Sherman Manufacturing 23 years, retiring in 1966. Surviving are a brother, Lyle Chichester of Battle Creek; and sisters, Opal Mitchell and Thela Henker, both of East Leroy, and Margaret MacDonald of Union City. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at North Athens Baptist Church. Memorial donations may go to the American Cancer Society or Good Samaritan Hospice Care. Arrangements are by Royal Funeral Home.

OBITUARY. The Athens Times, Thursday, 30 Apr 1959. Mrs. Della E. Bauer, 78, widow of Charles Bauer, passed away at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in a Battle Creek hospital where she had been a patient for 11 days. Mrs. Bauer was born Dec. 3, 1880, in Athens Twp., the daughter of Abner and Agnes (Henry) Carpenter. She and Mr. Bauer were married on January 17, 1900, and they lived on a farm until his death May 20, 1957. Following his death, Mrs. Bauer moved to Battle Creek, living with Mrs. Maruice (Ruth) Sager of 90 E. Columbia Ave. She is survived by two sons, Earl of Emmett Twp. and C. Leo of Flint, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Spencer Funeral Home on Friday afternoon with Rev. E. A. Price officiating. Interment Burr Oak Cem., Athens.

Charles Clayton Bauer was 80 yrs. old when he died. In the same lot in the Burr Oak Cemetery, Athens, MI with his parents, Stephen A. Bauer and Katherine M. Reimer, the following were buried: Bauer, Howard A., 17 Jun 1913-26 Apr 1974, Cpl. U.S.A., and Christina A. 1885-1936, and Allan L. 1874-1936. In the same Cem. was also Bauer, Lester E., MD, 1903-1972 and Margaret W. 1903-19__. Another lot had: Percy A. Bauer and Grace E., no dates.

He was born Oct. 28, 1876, the son ofStephen A. and Catherine (Reimer) Bauer, and was married Jan. 17,1900, to Della Carpenter of Athens. He was the last of seven children. Surviving are the wife; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Sager of Battle Creek; two sons, Earl of Battle Creek and Leo of Flint; twelve grandchildren and six great-grancdhildren. Services were held on Sunday from the Spencer Funeral Home with Rev. James Moore of the Athens Methodist Church officiating. Interment in Burr Oak Cem..

OBITUARY. Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Monday, Mar 28, 1949. Athens - Mrs. Loraine Martin, 65, widow of Bert Martin, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday at Leila Hospital in Battle Creek, following a stroke. She was born March 31, 1884, in Athens Twp., a daughter of Abner and Agnes (Henry) Carpenter, and resided on a farm one mile southwest of East Leroy at the time of her death. The husband, Bert, died Aug. 8, 1948. Surviving are two sons, Olen of East Leroy and Lester of Battle Creek, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Bauer of Athens. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Spencer Funeral Home in Athens with the Rev. Don DeCoursey of Battle Creek officiating. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cem., Athens.
Census records showed Lillie Loraine was born in 1883. Her obituary said she was born in 1884.

OBITUARY. Athens Times, Thursday, January 25, 1962. Edward F. Lafler, 79, a farmer living on Route 1, Fulton, passed away Sunday afternoon at his home after an illness of two years. He had been seriously ill for three months. Mr. Lafler was born in Fulton, son of Frank and Lucinda (Burch) Lafler, and lived in the Fulton vicinity all his life. He was married Dec. 5, 1906, in Factoryville to Jennie Carpenter. She died January 15, 1944. Mr. Lafler was a member of the First Pilgrim Holiness Church of Battle Creek. Some information on this family sent to this typist, March 1994 from Phyllis Griffis Dembrouski, of Irons, Mich 49644. We have also received a letter from Thelma, daughter, age 85, living in Casco, Wis. We hope to receive more information on this line from her.
Thelma, daughter of William T. Griffis sent (in 1994) his birthday as 9 June 1879 so we will use this in this record rather than the Sep 1877/1878 that we had previously. The death date was also different. 2 Dec 1966 is what we had previously, but she gave 30 Aug 1966 which will be used in this record. As his daughter, she probably knows more accurately the exact dates.

William T. Griffis was probably named after his father and paternal grandfather--if so, his full name was William Thomas Griffis.
Buried in LOT 129 in the addition. Edna A. 1884-1948 OSSW= (On same stone with) William T. 1878-1966. OSSW= (On same stone with) William T. in the North Weare Cem. Weare Twp. Oceana, Mich. Their graves are at the back on the left side. Personal visit Apr 1994.
Her father's name was given as Charles at her wedding. Thema, her daughter gave her father as Marion N. Green which will be used in this record.
