Oceana , a teacher.   Married 15 Feb 1902 at Riverton, Oceana, Mich., Her parents were Erastus Griffis and Julie Daggett, his were P.U. Squire, and E. M. Sibley.   Witnesses:  Mattie Squire and Hugh Squire of Squireville, Mich.  Md. by S. W. Woodhull MG.  First mg. for both.

Newspaper Article, "There was a wedding at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Erastus Griffis, Feb. 15, 1902, where their daughter Belle was united in marriage to Arthur P. Squire, both of Riverton.  The bridal couple, accompanied by Miss Marie Squire as bride's maid and Hugh Squire as best man . . Mrs. D. H. Morton, musician. . .

Her name has also been called Beth.

Obituary: " Mrs. Laura Belle Squire, 72, a resident of Mason  most of her life, died today at Oceana Hospital, Hart, failing to rally after undergoing major surgery Sunday.  She was born in Riverton Twp., Mason  Sept 13, 1882, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Erastus Griffis, pioneer residents. . .later marrying Arthur P. Squire.  The couple resided at Bucks Corner on the Mason-Oceana county line before moving to Pentwater 40 years ago. The Squire family -father, mother and children--were well known throughout this area for many years for their musical ability, the Squire orchestra furnishing music for dances and many other social gatherings.  . . . leaves five sons,  Lester, Leslie and Jesse of Pentwater, Arthur P. of Flint and Arnold of Detroit; three daughters, Mrs. Leonard Lyons and Mrs. Clyde Snyder of Muskegon and Mrs. Glenn Heaster of Pentwater; two brothers; Earl Griffis of Muskegon and Orlo Griffis of Pentwater; 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild." In The Pentwater News, kFriday Oct. 16, 1902, "Arthur Squire of Mt. Pleasant is visiting his parents." (P. U. & Emma Squire).

He would have been 75 years old next week on Aug 24. . . .married Laura Belle Griffis Feb 15, 1902. . .and admirer of music, Mr. Squire played the violin and with his wife and children organized a family orchestra which enlivened many local dances. . .leaves his wife and 5 sons and 3 daughters. . ."

Death was believed to be in Muskegon, Muskegon, Mich. but this has not been validated.

Lauretta's (Lauraetta's) parents were George Fry and Clara Choell/Cloell (Clara Dodson was her name). Witnesses were:  Orlo Griffis (Roy's brother) of Riverton and Blondeau Hunse of Weare, MI.   Md. by: James Goudy, Clergy.  lst mg. for each.

Roy was in Real Estate, attended Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Durham Morton and lived all her life in this area.  Married to Orlo Griffis Oct 20, 1918, he preceded her in death Feb. 13, 1974.  Surviving are three sons, Morton & Roy Griffis of Pentwater and Donald Griffis of Muskegon.  A daughter Etta Lentz of Pentwater, 18 Grandchildren, 26 Great-grandchildren and one sister, Gladys Cutler of Pentwater.

Census Clay Center, Clay, Kansas, age 5; 1885 State Census, Athelstane, Clay, Kansas age 10; 1895 State Census, Clay , Kansas, age 20.  Birth certificate on file with Kansas State Board of Health, Div. of Vital Stastics, Topeka, Kansas.  Information from Julie Kohfeld, Logan, Utah. She mentions that Brewster is on the Thomas & Sherman County line.  Perhaps this is the burial site.

Joseph Robert was listed as "Joe of Brewster" in his mother's obituary of Dec. 1926.  He is listed as Joe Carpenter of Brewster in his sister, Carrie's, obituary in June 1958.

OBITUARY, Colby Free Press, Dec 25, 1961, "Joe Robert Carpenter, son of G.W. and Olivia Latimer Carpenter, was born Sept. 26, 1874, in Clay county and was taken by death at his home in Brewster on Dec. 18 at the age of 87 years, two months and 18 days.  In 1905 he moved with his family to Sherman county, not far from Brewster.  On Oct 20, 1909, Joe was united in marriage to Nora A. Jones at Beloit and to this union was born one son, Wayne, who was killed in Germany in 1945.  The Carpenters farmed near Brewster for years before retiring and moving to Brewster.  Joe was a member of the Cooperative of Brewster, a respected citizen and greatly appreciated by his realtives and friends.  Through the last 18 months of his life he was worn out in spirit due to accidents in breaking both limbs and with increasing weakness and a heart disturbance, gave up to death.  Surviving are his wife, Nora of Brewster, three brothers, L. N. of Colby, W. B and George of Denver, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.  Funeral services were held at the Brewster Methodist church Dec. 21 with interment in the Brewster Cem..  The minister of the church, Miss Marien Holbert, officiated."


Nora Alma Jones

OBITUARY:  Prairie Drummer. " Nora Alma Carpenter, 90, a resident of the Brewster community the past 65 years, died at her home Monday evening, Nov. 11.  She was born on Aug 20, 1884 at Beloit, the daughter of Felix and Margaret Jones, and was educated and graduated from Mitchell County Schools.   On Oct. 20, 1909 she married Joseph Robert Carpenter at Beloit.  He died Dec 18, 1961 at Brewster.  Their only child Wayne was killed in Holland during World War II. Mrs. Carpenter was quite active in community affairs, and is remembered for her good spirits and inspiration and voted in the last election.  She was a member of the Brewster United Methodist Church, was an honorary member of the Brewster VFW Auxiliary and also belonged to the Gold Star Mothers.  She is survived by a sister C. P. Pardue, Loving, NM, several nieces and nephews, and by her close friends who took care of her the past few years.  Mr. & Mrs. Marion Crumrine and family.  Six brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.  Services were held Wednesday afternoon from the United Methodist Church at Brewster with Rev. Lawn Sauer officiating.  Pall bearers were:  Larry Roulier, Everett Allen, Wayne Goetsch, Ron Lewallen, Jerald Wolfe, Mason Crumrine.  Singers were Mrs. William Selby and Mrs. Lawn Sauer, organist was Mrs. Kenneth Eieher."


Tombstone dates are 1884-1974, and are slightly different from what we had previously been given.

Burial was in Norton Cem., and Obit in The Norton Daily Telegram.  Information from Julie Kohfeld, Logan, Utah.

A note from Elma Carpenter of Battle Creek, MI, after a trip to Kansas, said, "Carrie was married in Emporia."
We had been given a different place, Manchester, Dickinson, Kansas.  Emporia may be more correct.

Carrie was listed as Carrie Kohfeld of Norton, (Kansas) in her mother's obituary in Dec. 1926.

OBITUARY:  " Carrie Kohfeld Dies Following Lengthy Illness    Funeral Services to be Conducted Here Thursday.   Mrs. Carrie A. Kohfeld, 81, mother of H. C. Kohfeld of Norton, died at 2:15 this morning, June 9, at the Andbe Home.  She had been in failing health for many years and was under care at the Andbe Home for seven years.    Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m.  Thursday at The Scott-Brantley Funeral Home, Rev. S. E. Staley will officiate.  Burial will be at the Norton Cem..    Carrie Carpenter was born Oct. 7, 1876 at Industry, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Carpenter.  She was raised at Industry and married Frank Kohfeld at Manchester.  Following their marriage, the Kohfelds lived at Emporia.   Mr. Kohfeld died in 1920 and Mrs. Kohfeld moved to Lincoln, Nebr., where she lived for many years.  The Kohfelds raised three children, two of who survive their parents.  The surviving children are H. C. Kohfeld of Norton and Mrs. J. C. Cellar of Omaha.  One daughter predeceased her mother, Mrs. Leona McCormack.   Mrs. Kohfeld was amember of the Presbyterian church.  In addition to her children, she is survived by five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four brothers.  The brothers are Joe Carpenter of Brewster, George of Denver, Louis and William of Colby.

OBITUARY.  Chase County Leader, Cottonwood Falls, Chase , KS, 30 Aug 1920.  Frank Kohfeld who died at his home in Strong City last week was one of the best known employees on the Santa Fe and was one of the best liked men among the Santa Fe workers.  He was a native of Russia, having been born in Rudnerweide, South Russia on February 7th, 1866.  When a small boy of only ten years of age he came to the United States with his parents and located in Lehigh, Marion County, Kansas.  He took out his first naturalization papers in 1892 and was later made a citizen of the United States.  He was united in marriage to Carrie A. Carpenter, April 1, 1896 at Manchester, Kansas.  To this union, three children were born, one son and two daughters.  His sudden death came as a severe shock to his many friends and relatives as his illness was of only a few hours duration.  His condition was not considered critical until a few minutes before death came.  He had not been feeling well for several days and was preparing to go to the Sante Fe hospital at Topeka when he became worse and died a few minutes after the doctor arrived.  Heart trouble caused from disorders of the stomach was said to have caused his death.  At the time of his death, Mr. Kohfeld had been in the employ of the A.T. & S.F. railway here for 26 years and was one of the oldest engineers on this division.  Mr. Kohfeld was a kind and loving husband and father, congenial, honest, industrious and honored and respected by all who knew him and will be greatly missed by his friends and neighbors.   He leaves to mourn his death his wife, son, Harold, and daughters, Grace and Leona, five brothers and two sisters.  Funeral services were held at home Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. H. B. Mayo of this city, and interment was made in the Strong City Cem..  Those from out of town who attended the funeral were:  Mr. and Mrs. August Kohfeld, Hillsboro; Mrs. M. O. Carpenter, Brewster, Kansas; Mr. George Carpenter, Colby, Kansas; Mr. Earl Carpenter, Brewster, Kansas; Mr. J. A. Collar, Barnard, Kansas; Mrs. Frank Murphy, Barnard, Kansas; and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Judd of Emporia.

Louis was listed as "Lewis of Brewster in his mother's obituary in 1926.   He is listed as Louis of Colby in his sister's, Carrie's, obituary of June, 1958)   Louis Napoleon was listed as one of " three brothers,  L. N. of Colby," (Kansas) in his brother Joe Robert Carpenter's obituary in Dec 1961.

Birth place; Industry, Clay, Kansas.   On the  1895 State Census, Clay , Kansas, he was age 1.  Marriage license #5493, State of Kansas, Vit. Stastics. Buried in Howe-Chapel Hill Memorial Chap.  This information was from Julie Kohfeld, Logan, Utah.

1910 U. S. Census, Sherman , Union Twp., Kansas, taken 27 Apr,  ED 194, Sheet 4, Line 25, George is in his brother Louis' (Lewis on census) home.  George is age 16.  Their mother is there too listed as a widow, age 58.

1920 U. S. Census, Thomas County, Kansas. Vol 62. ED 225, Sheet 7, Line 99.  Carpenter, George, age 25, b. Kansas; Edna A., wife, 24, b. Kansas, and George E., son,  4 3/12, b. Kansas; Frances L., daughter, 2 2/12 ab. Kansas.  Dewey, Loy D. H. M (hired man?), 20, b. Minnesota.

George was listed as living in Colby in his mother's obituary in Dec. 1926.  He is listed as George of Denver in his sister's, Carrie's, obituary in June 1958.    George Wesley Carpenter was listed as "one of three brothers . . .George of Denver. . ." in his brother's (Joseph Robert's) obituary in Dec 1961.


26873. Edgar E. Barnes

As a youngster, he would have migrated with the family to Rockford, Illinois about 1872, on to Rockwell, Iowa, about 1785, before settling in Clay Center, Kansas, about 1878.  Edgar is listed in the 1880 Census for Clay Center as a 13 year old living in the home of his parents.  Seven years later, 1887, he married Nettie Parker who was born about 1866in Clay Center.  According to Bonnie Porter, they had two children, However, the name of only one, Leah is known.  Edgar died on 30 Aug 1890, a few days after his 24th birthday in Broughton, Clay Co., KS.  This would have been about four years after the death of his father and two years after his mother remarried.  His wife, Nettie, died in 1910.
