OBITUARY:  The Rooks County (Kansas) Record, August 30, 1917, p. 8  F. M Barnes, Fred M. Barnes, who has been ill for several weeks at the home of his brother, Frank Barnes, passed away Saturday.  Mr. Barnes was brought to Clay Center from his home in Nebraska during his illness in hopes that the change might be of benefit to his health and although he was better at the first of his stay, he gradually grew weaker, until death took him home to rest.  Fred Milton Barnes was born in Schuyler County, NY, October 19, 1869 and departed this life August 18, 1917, at Clay Center, Kansas.  At his demise he was 47 years and 10 months of age.  As a boy he migrated with his parents thru the Central states, eventually coming to Clay Center, where he grew to manhood.  On October 19, 1887, at St. George, Kan., he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Blood.  To this union were born five children; Mrs. Will Selbe of North Platte, Neb., three sons, Frank, Marion and Freddie, and a daughter, Dorcas.  He leaves to mourn his departure a devoted wife and five children, a loving mother, Mrs. R. E. Shadle of Green, Kan., and three brothers, Frank of Clay Center, John of Elmira and Bert of Syracuse, NY.   His was a life of labor wherein he saw and realized the rugged side of life.  His ideal of true manhood as he expressed it, was he of whom it might be said, "the wold was a better because he lived in it."  The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, August 20, at the Frank Barnes residence, conducted by Rev. R. D. Lowen of the Christian church.  Burial was made in the Greenwood Cem..

Clay Center Times.  We learn that F. M. Barnes, who went to North Platte, Nebr., some two or three years ago, died at the home of his brother in Clay Center, Kansas.  He was taken sick while on his farm with Bright's disease.  In two months after going to Clay Center he died very suddenly.  He leaves a wife, two sons, and two daughters.  The Barnes family resided in Rooks county fourteen years.  The deceased was very highly esteemed by a large circle of friends.  His age was 47--Rooks County Record.
