27907. Karl Carpenter

KARL Carpenter was born 26 July 1875 in West Milford, W. Va.  When he was about
two years old the family moved to a farm near Bridgeport. Karl left home at age
18 and worked for awhile as fireman on the B. & 0. Railroad.  Then after a
short time he went to work in the oil fields, hauling equipment.  On 22
September 1903 in Salem, West Virginia, Karl married Emrma Joanna Payne,
daughter of Genius and Amanda Catherine (Hammond) Payne.  Emma was born 18 May
1883 in Coburn's Fork, West Virginia. After their marriage Karl worked for
South Penn. Oil Company. He worked his way up to being driller and finally a
"fisherman".  This was one of the highest positions in the oil fields.
Fishermen were given the responsibility of extracting tools that became
disengaged and fell into the well.  Karl retired in 1935 and lived in Doddridge
County, West Virginia, where he ran his own dairy farm for awhile.
The dairy farm was located beside a winding road that later became Highway 50.
Karl and Emma woke up early to start their busy day at their dairy farm. Karl
loved Wheaties and ate them every morning. Karl and Emma would gather the cows
in the pasture . Then they used to stop traffic and drive the cows across the
road to the barn. After milking his cows Karl  used to run the milk through a
strainer. It was Class C milk. George Carpenter remembers helping his
grandfather amd grandma with this process and said the round cardboard milk cap
read Class C milk. After the milk was bottled it was put into the refrigerator.
Karl delivered milk to houses along his milk route. He also sold milk to A and
P Grocery Store and IGA. These stores were the last on his route. If the milk
at the stores had not sold he would bring it back home and give it to Emma.
Emma would put it into the church and make buttermilk and butter. Grandma Emma
used to have a sign that read "Buttermilk, butter and eggs for sale". People
used to stop in the yard to purchase these items. Grandma Emma would sell
buttermilk by the glass, quart or 1/2 gallon. For those that wanted to buy it
by the glass she would invite them to her cool, comfortable  porch to enjoy the
delicious buttermilk by the glass. There were some regular customers.  Emma
always had a big lunch ready when Karl returned from town.
Suzette remembers her Grandfather Karl as a man who was stern. In fact she
remembers being told that when the sons each got married that the new daughers
-in-laws would address he as Mr. Carpenter except Frances who married Harold.
She called him Dad immediately upon her marriage. Karl did have a conversation
with Frances when he realized that she went to the barn to smoke so as to not
smoke in their home. He told her that she should smoke in the farmhouse so as
to not burn his barn down. Grandpa used to write in his diary ( weather,
business transactions, and etc.)  each night and loved to look at an atlas. He
loved to study maps.
Karl carried on his father's  tradition of being a Mason. He  was a Mason for
62 years and received his 50 year service button in 1948,
On 5 Feb. 1960 Emma passed away in her sleep at their farmhouse  near Salem
after sharing their life together for 57 years.   Karl lived there for about a
year after Emma died and then made his home with various of his sons for the
next six years.  He was at the home of his son William when he died on 11 May
1967 in Haggerstown, Maryland at the age of 92.

Carpenter, via E-MAIL on 21 Sept. 2000.  SEE: LOGBOOK M0087 for the complete

Emma Joanna Payne

Suzette Carpenter Galloway recollects visiting her grandmother Emma and
Grandfather Karl at their farm in Salem."Grandma was an excellent seamstress
and used a trettle machine to make me and my doll. I remember hearing  that
when any of her 4 sons were naughty...she made them sit down and sew on the
machine. The boys of course would be terrible embarrased however, it was a
little know fact  that the boys could sew well...so I guess they did get  into
trouble like all little boys do.
Grandma was a very gentle person and loved music. I remember hearing her play
her favorite song "I'll take you home again Kathleen" on one of the two pianos
that sat in her parlor. When all the grandchildren arrived for visits she never
seemed to mind when they all wanted to play the pianos all at once.
Grandma prepared meals with many of the wonderful things that grew in her
garden beside the house. Corn on the cob and tomatoes have never tasted as good
as they did at her house. The meals often consisted of chicken, biscuits and
white gravy and vegetables and fruit.  I remember she would make cottage cheese
and would hang the  cheese cloth from the window over the sink where the
cottage cheese was rinsed.. One story I have to tell was about Grandma and her
chicken coop. Grandma used to ask me to gather the eggs. One summer morning  I
remember I was over anxious and tried to get the egg before the hen was ready
to get off the nest. The hen pecked me in the face and I ran out of the chicken
coop crying for Grandma. Grandma wiped my tears and checked to see that my eye
was not pecked and asked me to go to the hen house with her. She asked me to
show her which hen it was and I pointed to one that I thought was the one. She
took the hen out of the hen house and walked to the big tree by the farmhouse
and instantly twirled it around and  rang its neck. She than cut its head off
in preparating for getting it ready for our evening meal. The chicken ran around
the yard. It was then I learned that chickens nervous system reacts when they
are beheaded and that a chicken is capable of running around. We had the hen
for dinner that night. I was not very hungry because I thought I might that
pointed my  finger at  the wrong chicken.
There was a small creek that was behind the pasture and the farmhous . Across
the street from the  pasture and by Grandpa's barn  there was a small Baptist
church where the Carpenter's and neighbors  worshiped. The traveling preacher
used to baptize folks in the small bubbily creek . The pasture was always full
of fireflies and Grandma would give us a bottle to put them in after we caught
them.Being raised in a city and visiting Grandma and Grandpa at the farm each
summer was always such a treat.
I remember seeing Grandma and Grandpa still holding hands and sitting on the
screened porch of the farmhouse. They still seemed very much in love after over
50 years of marriage.
