Hebron Journal - 1898:
Martha Chapin died of blood poisoning and consumption. Third member of family to die. Father F. D. Chapin died last week.
An article at the Thayer Co. Historical Society, written by M. S. Carpenter, says:
My mother, Mary Louella (Mamie) Archer, married Frederick Dwight Chapin on March 29, 1887 and they had four children---George, born 1888; William Calvin, born 1890; Grace Louella, born 1892 and Martha, born 1894. This made up a warm and happy family until 1897, when the diphtheria epidemic struck and Mary lost her husband, Frederick, and two children, namely George and Martha, to the dreaded disease.
December 1897 newspaper article:
Mr. F. D. Chapin was taken sick last Saturday with the same disease that his little boy died with; little Gracie was taken sick the day before. Miss Sadie Archer came from Beatrice after Georgie's death and she was taken sick with the same disease....Last Thursday evening at eight o'clock, Mr. F. D. Chapin fell victim of that dread disease, diphtheria, which had taken his little Georgie two weeks before. As the old year was taking its last leave of earth, we lay all that was mortal at rest in Pleasant Plain Cemetery.
Newspaper article dated February 1898:
The memorial services of the deaths of Mr. Chapin and two children, Martha and George, will be at Pleasant Plain Church, Feb. 27.

He was born to Carl Carson and Madge Elizabeth Richardson Carpenter in Perrysville, Indiana.
He married June M. Andre on Aug. 30, 1942. She survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Lee (Kristin) Carpenter of Dayton, Ohio and Thomas Carpenter of LaGrange; two daughters, Kathie (Bob) Bookwalter of Danville and Cheryl (Ron) Jones of Brea, California.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Alice Lett of Fort Myers, Florida.
He was preceded by his parents; a brother, Carl Richard Carpenter and a sister, Elizabeth Faucett.
He served with the U.S. Marines.
