Thanks for the quick comeback. The other Abner I eliminated due to location.
As an added coincidence, he died the same year as "my Abner",
but in MA, while my Abner is well documented in Dryden, NY.  His wife (2?) is
a Hughes and is also well documented. Their first recorded child is my
ancestor Laura, who was b. 1800, as the new family was leaving Washington
Co... NY (VT) for the Syracuse area and then to Dryden in ca. 1802.  My
Grandfather in his memoirs said Abner was b. Hebron.  I chased Hebron, NY,
but it wasn't established at the time of his birth. Hebron CT was there,
however, and Coventry broke away from the larger town of Hebron and Abner
(son of Daniel) was b. there.  Church records of Coventry burned and what
remains is fragmentary. Recorded births of Abner (of Daniel) end in 1798 as
follows: Known Children of Abner Carpenter [s/o Daniel of CT]
Abner, b. 1790 Coventry, Ct, res. Bellevue, MI; d. by 1847
William, b. 1792 Coventry, Ct, res. Bellevue, MI
Polly, b 1794 Coventry, Ct, res. Bellevue, MI; m. George W. Fish
Sophia, b. 1796 Coventry, Ct, res. Bellevue, MI
Seymour, b. 1798 Coventry, Ct, a Dr. in NYC in 1847
From the library in Hebron, I find many people left the Coventry area ca.
1800, some without taking their families! All heading north and west. I can't
find Abner (of Daniel)'s wife's name and so far have not been able to track
the offspring, but have some feelers out in MI.
My Grandfather was very sensitive to things like Rev. War Vets and in the
Cortland, NY public park is a monument with Vet's names.  I have a Nathan
Walker and an Asa Parker.  No mention of Abner. I looked in Dutchess Co. for
a Quaker Abner, who may have not served.  So far, plenty of Carpenters, but
no Abner.
Anyway, if anything crosses your mind, let me know.  I am typing the
Carpenter Family Reunion Minutes from 1909 - 1973, and would like closure on
the patriarch.  Thanks again...... Dave Fouts.
MORE: 25 Aug 2000
John:  Thank you for your information on Seymour Carpenter.  His father in your
document is
one and the same as my ancestor Abner Carpenter, m. Abigail Hughes ca. 1800,
settling in
Camillus and later Dryden NY as you have described.  I am descended from two of
Abner's 8
offspring from this second marriage, namely Laura (m. William Tillotson) and
Henry (m. Isabel
Sloan).  I had speculated that Abner may have been the same as was the parent
of Seymour
and the others, children of the first wife (Mary?), and a great deal is known
of his offspring of
the second marriage (Abigail Hughes), but nothing of the children of the first.
Are you
descended from Abner, and do you have any information on other early siblings
of Seymour,
namely: Abner, William, Polly and Sophia?....  "Amos B. Carpenter" says some of
them
Reside Bellevue, Mich.  I have been unable to trace in a cursory attempt.
If this identification holds up, it will solve a mystery that has haunted the
Abner Carpenter
family for many years, as it was well known that Abner kept his earlier life
(before Abigail) to
himself (at least none of it leaked to his descendents).  The later family has
held a family
reunion since 1909, and it still continues today. I have the minutes of the
1909 - 1973 reunion,
and am in contact with the present generation of Carpenters in the Dryden area.
Any further
confirming identification of the link between Abner (father of Seymour) and
Abner (d. in Dryden, NY) would be greatly appreciated.

1983. Daniel Carpenter

Revised notes by Gene Zubrinsky - April 2007.
Daniel's birth is recorded in Coventry Vital Records (see Susan Whitney Dimock, ed., _Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Death in Coventry, Connecticut_ [New York, 1897], 22). His death data is from his gravestone inscription ([If this is correct, cite published source.]).

The Carpenter Memorial confuses this Daniel Carpenter, son of Daniel6 (Jedediah5, Benjamin4, William3-1) and Elizabeth (Skinner) Carpenter, with a Woodstock, Conn., man of that name. It also misidentifies his wife and offspring (see below); his paternal uncles and aunts; and his paternal grandfather (right name, wrong man) (see Amos B. Carpenter, _A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America_ [Amherst, Mass., 1898], 65, 96-97, 177, 303). The revised ancestral data appears elsewhere herein.

The following notes were contributed by Winifred Sihon , 15 Jan 2007:

In his Revolutionary War pension application, dated April 13, 1820, at Vienna, Oneida Co. N.Y., Daniel says he is 65 and his wife 56, and that he joined the Continental Army at Coventry, Conn., in 1775 (Revolutionary War Pension File #--------).

The 1790 U.S. census has him at East Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn. (1-2-2). In the 1800 federal census for Stafford, Tolland Co., Conn., Daniel Jr. (30001-20110) and Daniel [Sr.] (00001-00002) are enumerated in immediate succession. It is almost certainly he and his family who are recorded at Pompey, Onondaga Co., N.Y., in 1810 (32201-11010). As above, Daniel was living in Vienna, Oneida Co., N.Y., in 1820. His pension application, dated in that year, indicates that he still had three dependent sons: Harvey, Asa, and Orson, born in 1804, 1805, and 1807, respectively. It also mentions a debt to [son-in-law] Chauncey Tuttle. Though not recorded as a householder in the 1820 or 1830 U.S. censuses, Daniel was presumably still living in Vienna, in the former year probably with daughter Theodosia [Mrs. Chauncey] Tuttle.) In February 1833, Daniel requested that his pension payments be sent to Huron Co., Ohio ([source citation]). The record of his final pension payment reports children Harvey, Orson, and Asa Carpenter, all of Ripley, Ohio; Eber Carpenter and Rosanna, wife of Ezra Chappel, of Fairfield, Ohio ([source citation]).

Old notes that include email and work ...

WARNING!  Number 1188 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 177 with Family on page 303 (#387)
identifies the wrong Daniel and wife. Second, Daniel's paternal uncles and aunts are identified on pages 96-97 as Amy, Rebecca, Caleb, and Patience (all born at Rehoboth, Mass.), when in fact they were Joel, Ruth, Nathan, Samuel, Dorcas, and Ezekiel (all baptized at Bolton, Conn.); Daniel Sr.'s birthplace is unknown but was certainly not Rehoboth. Third, the Jedediah Carpenter described on page 65 as Daniel Sr.'s father is the wrong one (my correction of this will appear on the CD in a separate file).Note from Gene Zubrinsky.

The Daniel Carpenter who married Judith Perry [Woodstock, 30 Oct. 1783] (see Carp. Mem., 177) is a different man, perhaps a descendant of John4 (William3-1) and Rebecca (Redway) Carpenter, who settled at Woodstock about 1692 and who, through son Eliphalet, had a grandson Daniel (b. 1735, however). Perhaps Judith Perry's husband is the Daniel Carpenter listed in the 1790 U.S. Census at South Brimfield, Mass., and in that of 1800 at adjacent Monson. Elijah Perry, the only one of that surname in the 1790 census for Woodstock, is presumably the man of that name listed as a Monson householder in 1800. Not to be confused with either of the above Daniel Carpenters is Dan Carpenter, listed at Woodstock in the 1790 and 1800 censuses; he was born at adjacent Ashford in 1750, son of Uriah and Sarah (Hayward) Carpenter.

My Eber Carpenter was a different man.  All I know for sure is that he was born in CT in 1799 or 1800, lived in Hanibel NY, and then Lima, NY before going to Michigan in 1832.  He went first to Dexter where he started a Baptist church, then bought land in Salem in Washtenaw Co. and started another church there and in Plymouth.  He died in 1856 and is buried in Oakland Co., Michigan and I have his will and the 1850 census which says he was born in CT.  Some of his children claimed that this Eber's father was Daniel Carpenter and a Revolutionary soldier.  I now have the pension papers for a Daniel Carpenter who came to Huron Co., OH from Oneida Co., NY.  This Daniel's census indicates older sons but does not name them.  I know all about Eber the NH doctor and Eber the Connecticut pastor and assumed that someplace down the line they were in the same Rehobath Carpenters so I have studied all the records, but this is the first possible ancestor I have found.  Thanks for responding to my posting.  Winnie Sihon

Huldah Leonard

The most significant evidence that this Daniel Carpenter is the man of that name who married Huldah Leonard is the recurrence of her forename and surname, both distinctive, among several of his children and grandchildren.] For more information on the Leonard family, see info supplied by Brad Leonard at:   .

It is evident from census data (see above) that Daniel had several children in addition to those identified below.
