Hi John,
Here's the GEDCOM, starting a couple of generations later than James Burnham Carpenter.
Let me know if you find anything about Nathaniel's ancestry.  I suspect his parents were Nathaniel Carpenter and Elizabeth Butterworth of Coventry Rhode Island, but that's based only on circumstantial evidence.
In the GEDCOM, the Carpenter and Walcott lines are pretty thoroughly researched, but some of the other lines are a little more tenuous.
I don't know of any male Carpenter descendants in this line.  I have been in contact, via Genforum, Robert T. Santos and Jeffrey A. Watson.  Both of them are descended from Nathaniel and Anna (Nancy) Walcott, but are not Carpenters.
Good luck.

John's father was Nathaniel Carpenter, b. abt 1756, m Anna Walcott on 12 Feb 1779 in Woodstock VT.  Nathaniel d. 5 Mar 1796 in Pomfret, VT, and is buried there in Burns Cemetery (ae 40).

Henry, b. 28 Dec 1779
George, b. 11 Oct 1781
Elizabeth, b. 1784
Anna, b. 1 Dec 1786

John, b. abt 1793

Anna "Nancy" Wolcott

Nathaniel Carpenter (d. 5 Mar 1796) married an Anna Walcott (daughter of William Walcott and Ester Foster  - Family ) on 12 Feb 1779 in Pomfrit Twp,, Windham, Vermont.   Anna Walcott was born 11 Jan 1761 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.

See Notes for her son, John.
"On April 28, 1800, when John would have been eight and his sister Nancy 13, their mother married James Thwing in Pomfret.  James's wife Hannah had died on January 1, 1796, just two months before Nathaniel Carpenter died.  James had 10 children when his wife died, but the two oldest, Prisca and Susannah were 19 and 18, and so they would have been old enough to look after their younger brothers and sisters.  After James and Nancy were married, they moved to nearby Barre, taking young John and possibly his older sister Nancy with them."
