Evie 1st wife of Joseph "Joe" Wheeler Phillips. Three infants buried this cemetery with no dates that were their children with Daisy & Ossie Mae. Total of five children by Evie & Joe. We always thought grandmother Evie looked a lot like "Drew Barrymore" when she and grandpa were married and she was so young and was so beautful. Though she died before I was even "thought" of I have loved her and remember her with so many memories my mother and her sisters shared. Evie and Essie grampa Joe's second wife were cousins.

Took off from Mokerang Airfield on Los Negros on a weather reconnaissance flight and intended to return to Mokerang. The weather was overcast and stormy forcing it to fly to the New Guinea mainland. Low on fuel, the crew decided to bail out.
At 2:30am, the B-24's last reported position was between Long Island and the northern coast of New Guinea. The first two to bail out were the only two that survived. The fates of the other crew members are unknown.
Memorials
The crew was officially declared dead on February 26, 1946. All are memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.

SEE ALSO: Two survived the bail out and wrote a report.

NOTE: Location reported west of Long Island and on a heading toward the New Guinea coast.
This means the survivors who bailed out  over the the Vitiaz Strait which separates the Bismark Sea from the Solomon Sea. Both of these seas are part of the South Pacific Ocean. They were picked up about 3 miles off the Guinea coast about noon the next day. It is possible that the plane flew over the coast into the interior where dense jungle will hide the wreck. For an example: a one minute delay flying at a ground speed of 180 mph equals 3 miles.

Nell Ree Carpenter Goldman Birth:  1921
Death:  Apr. 23, 2010
Tennessee, USA
Nell Ree Carpenter Goldman, 89, a native of Yarbo, died April 23, 2010 in the home of her daughter in Memphis, Tenn. She was the eldest child of the late Bessie and Collie Carpenter.
Mrs. Goldman was a graduate of Washington County High School Class of '39, marrying the same year and moving to Millry where later as a young mother and wife was part owner in the Millry Gulf Station. Later, she was the support person in her husband's logging business and automobile parts and repair business.
Preceding her in death were her husband, George Goldman; son, Doyle Goldman; and brothers, Hershel, Herman and Charles.
Mrs. Goldman traveled the world visiting interesting places and meeting note-worthy people through the pages of innumerable books and magazines. Reading was a treasured therapeutic pastime. It was said she could churn butter, rock her baby and read all at the same time.
She grew a garden every season, canned and froze the vegetables as well as shared them with friends and family. Her biscuits made from scratch served with her homemade jam, jelly and preserves were worth a drive from most anywhere. Her vegetable garden was necessary, but her flower beds were her love. She spent hours working in her flowers, many of which started with a branch snipped from a sister or friend's yard.
She was a very important person in the life of her grandchildren. Her grandsons have very fond memories of fishing trips with Grandma.
Mrs. Goldman was also an accomplished seamstress for herself, but more so for her three daughters. Her later years were spent carefully constructing handmade quilts. At the age of 84, a broken leg complicated by Alzheimer's disease resulted in her admission to Washington County Nursing Home where she stayed until she was 89. She moved to Memphis and lived with her daughter the last six months of her life.
She is survived by her children, Don (Lavone) Goldman of Pennington, Gene (Carol) Goldman, Randy (Diane) Goldman and Penny (Dale) Chapman, all of Millry, Judy (Gary) Shaw of Memphis and Dinah (James) Haley of Bay Minette; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ester Blount of Citronelle, Vergie (L.A.) Walker of Leroy, Vear Jones and Carol (Sonny) Atchison, both of Millry, and Harlean (Billy) Nutt of Gulf Shores; and one brother, Cecil (Dottie) Carpenter of Many, La.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be Friday, April 30, 3 p.m., at Millry Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Jude's Children Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn, or the Alabama Children's Home. An online guestbook may be signed at www.lathanfuneralhomes. com.
Arrangements are by Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom.
