Top of Form 1 Obit: Don CARPENTER, 97 / Annapolis MD / 24Dec2001
Posted by: Terry Date: December 31, 2001 at 19:01:05
Obituaries published December 27, 2001, "The Capital", Annapolis, Md. -- Don Carpenter, veteran outdoors writer, dies at 97. Donald Newcomb "Don" Carpenter, outdoors columnist for The Capital for more than 40 years, died Dec. 24 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness. He was 97 and lived in Annapolis. An avid fisherman since childhood, Mr. Carpenter, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, began his career as the first Scripps-Howard outdoors columnist in March 1927 at the former Washington Daily News, being hired by the late Ernie Pyle. He also wrote columns for the former Evening Star newspaper in Washington and The Washington Post before moving to Annapolis in 1955 to write "Rod and Gun" for The Evening Capital. Over the years he published many articles in Field and Stream magazine and other national outdoor magazines. Though no longer able to go fishing himself in his 90s, he still reported on fishing conditions around the Chesapeake Bay through his network of friends. Born on Aug. 3, 1904, in Staten Island, N.Y., he was a son of Navy Capt. Dudley N. Carpenter, a physician and later head of the medical department at the Naval Academy, and grandson of a Civil War veteran, Rear Adm. Charles Carroll Carpenter, who was commander-in-chief of the Asiatic Squadron in 1895. He joined the Marine Corps in 1922 and was a drill sergeant at Parris Island, S.C., and served at a naval base in Sitka, Alaska. He was commissioned in the reserve and called to active duty in World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the military in 1962. Following his initial military service in 1925, he worked as an insurance agent for Aetna Life Insurance Co. in Washington until the 1940s. During this time he was twice elected president of the Chevy Chase Citizens Association. He won several medals in the Washington Swimming Club and founded and was first president of the National Capital Casting Club. He also organized a fishing club for the Washington Daily News with several thousand members. For nearly 20 years he was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 52. With more than 100 members, the troop was the country's largest and was known for going camping every week of the year. He was a Coast Guard-licensed charter boat captain on the Chesapeake Bay and New Jersey coastal waters for nearly 40 years. He also was a member of the Annapolis Stamp Club for more than 30 years. He was formerly married to the late Marian Roberts Carpenter. His second wife, Alice T. "Peggy" Carpenter, died in 1994. Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Ann Freitag of Ozark, Ark.; two sons, Thomas Roberts Carpenter of Annapolis, Md., and Donald Newcomb Carpenter Jr. of Bethesda, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., Annapolis, where a memorial service will be at noon. Private burial will be held later in the spring at the Naval Academy Cemetery.
