Carolyn Janette "Nettie" Anderson, born January 5, 1863,on the Ballangrudeiet farm near Lunner, Norway. She died in Lebanon, Ks. on Sept. 20, 1952.Her parents were Christiania Johannesdtr and Anders Larsen(of Velo). They did not marry. On April 22, 1875 she left Norway bound for Monroe, Wisconsin with her grandparents; Karen and Johannes Christoffersen Ballangrud and her Uncle Jorgen (George). Nettie was 12 years old.
(I always heard growing up that Great Grandma Nettie came over on a ship from Norway and on the way over to America, a wave hit and if her Uncle Jorgen hadn't of grabbed her she would of went over.)
Her mother Christiania left Norway on May 21, 1879 from Stadum in Vestre Gran with her husband and settled in Norweigian Grove, MN.
On November 27, 1884 she was united in marriage to Mark Carpenter. To this union were born 9 children, 4 boys and 5 girls; John, Rosa, Martin, Nellie, Ernest, James Franklin, Pearl, Florence and Myra. Her husband and 3 children preceded her in death. Rosa, Martin and Ernest.There are 27 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
Nettie was confirmed April 30, 1876 at Wiota Lutheran Church
The Carpenters came to Smith County, Kansas in March 1894 ( in a covered wagon) and were residents of this place for 30 years. In 1924 they moved to Jefferson county, Ne., near Endicott.
After Mr. Carpenter's death, she made her home among her children.
The last few years of her failing health she was confined to the home of her daughter Mrs. Nellie Atwill, where she passed to the great beyond September 20, 1952 at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 15 days.

Nellie May Carpenter Atwill, fourth child of Nettie Anderson and Mark Carpenter was born Feb.1, 1890 at Gratiot, Wis. She died Jan. 23,1982 at Smith County Hospital in Smith Center, Ks. There were 9 children in the family, the first 6 were born in Wisconsin the last 3 were born in Kansas. Four boys and five girls; John, Rosa, Martin William, Nellie, Ernest Earl, James Franklin, Pearl, Florence and Myra.
When Nellie was 4 years old, the family moved to Lebanon, Ks., (by covered wagon) where she grew to adulthood. On March 1,1911 she was united in marriage to Arthur J. Atwill. To this union were born 11 children. Four boys and seven girls; Ralph, Marguerite, Evelyn, Ada, Eugene, Lucille, Arthur, Reida, Lona, Nellie Lois and Willard. Besides raising this big family she always kept busy with outside work, such as washing, sewing, anything to help with the finances.
She spent most of the remaining years of her life in Lebanon. In 1978 Nellie along with her daughter Marguerite moved to Smith Center, Ks..
Her husband Arthur (1950) and two children preceded her in death, Evelynand Ralph.
It was at her home where all the Atwill children would come back, usually during the Lebanon Celebration, and have huge family reunions.
This would usually consist of anywhere from 30 grandchildren to 9 children and their spouses. And numerous Aunts and Uncles. It was a house full of love.
Nellie was a great cook, home-made noodles, pies, lots of good cooking going on in her kitchen.
Outside the big kids and the little kids had a huge yard to play different activities in. Football and baseball games were a big favorite. Some horseshoes were thrown, along with some jump rope and climbing the numerous trees she had in the yard.

Arthur James Atwill was born to Ellen Adelia Webster and James Atwill on October 28, 1887, at Wichita, Kansas, and passed to his eternal rest December 7, 1950 at his home in Lebanon, Ks.
When but a small child he and his parents moved to Topeka, where he grew to manhood, then they moved to Jewell County.
It was here he met Nellie May Carpenter and they were united in marriage on March 1, 1911. To this union, eleven children were born.
He and his family moved to Smith county, living in the country near Lebanon until the winter 1931, when they moved to Lebanon.
In 1932 their hearts were made sad by the passing of their daughter Evelyn.
Art as he was known to his many friends, was a kind and industrious man, always working hard to provide the best for his family, of whom each one was very near and dear to him.
He and his wife were baptized and joined the U. B. Church at Independence while they lived on a farm in that neighborhood.
Although Art had been in failing health for some time he made no complaints. He took with patience what life had in store for him, even his last week in which he was in bed most of the time.Those who will miss him most are his loving wife, his three sons, Willard of the home. Eugene of Portland, Or., and Arthur of Smith Center; six daughters, Marguerite and Lois of Wichita, Mrs. Ada Spradlin, Orange Lake, Fl., Mrs. Lucille Shroeder, Superior, Ne., Mrs. Reida Holding, Bakersfield, Ca., and Lona Relihan of Lebanon; four grandsons and two granddaughters; also two sisters, Mrs. Ora Carpenter of Lebanon and Mrs. Claudie King of Kent, Wa. A brother, Eugene, and a sister, Mrs. Fanny Taylor, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Sunday December 10 at the Christian Church conducted by Rev. Loren Silsby, assisted by Rev. D.B. Tromler. Flower girls were members of the senior and junior high school classes and the pallbearers, all high school seniors were: Garth Renken, Jim Post, Gary Myers, Don McElfresh, Hugh Hendreickson and Carroll Beardslee.
Interment was in the Price Cemetery.

Mary Alsop Kenneth's mother was the daughter of another coloniser, William Alsop from Berriew, Montgomeryshire, Wales .
Kenneth and Florence did not have children, so there are others who will not know the history that lies in these names.

Funeral for Myra Lavada Buller will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Vancouver Funeral Chapel. She died Sunday in a Portland hospital. She was 82.
Mrs. Buller was born in Lebanon, Kan., and had lived in Vancouver since 1948. She was a homemaker.
Surviving Mrs. Buller are her husband, Herbert J. of Vancouver; son, Howard of Vancouver; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Darlington- John Carpenter, 73, Darlington, died yesterday afternoon at a hospital here following a brief illness.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Gratiot and farmed in Lamont township until he retired and moved to Darlington in 1940.
He leaves his wife Elsie; four daughters, Mrs. Frank Reichling, Darlington, Mrs. Lewis Coulthard, Mineral Point, Mrs. Milo Coulthard, Shullsburg, and Ann, at home; four sons, Floyd, Waukesha, Harold, Platteville, and Roy and James, both of Darlington; a brother, William, Gratiot and 35 grandchildren.
Services are pending at the Sharer funeral home.

Darlington- Mayor Frank Reichling, 52, who collapsed while conducting a City Council meeting Tuesday night, died Wednesday night in a Darlington hospital.
Reichling, who had apparently been in good health, collapsed suddenly during the council meeting, and was rushed to his home. He was taken to the hospital later.
The head of the Reichling Bros. garage here, Reichling was serving his second term as mayor. He was first elected in April, 1950, when he defeated incumbent Paul McGettigan by a 433 to 282 vote margin. In April of this year he was reelected to a second term, when he defeated Paul Peterson, first ward alderman, by 611 to 437. Reichling also was a former alderman from the second ward.
He is survived by his wife, Rella; two sons, Barney and Francis, both of Darlington; four daughters, Mrs. Robert Carl, Greenwood; Mrs. Harold Ayer, Wilton; Mrs. Arthur Seidel, Milwaukee, and Lois, at home; his father, John Reichling, Darlington; three brothers, Harold, Delbert, and Nick, all of Darlington; four sisters, Mrs. Frank McDonald, Darlington; Mrs. Catherine Cline, Cuba City; Mrs. William McDermott, Kendall and Mildred Reichling, Darlington.
The body was taken to the Scharer funeral hone here. City officials here said Jospeh Donahue, president of the Darlington City Council, probably would be named acting mayor until a successor to Mr. Reichling can be named.

Adelia J. Bolles Navrude, 81, 1804 W. Horne St., died Friday, July 12, 1991, at a Sioux City hospital after a short illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Rev. Peter Boe of the First Lutheran Church of Onawa officiating.
Burial will be in the Correctionville Cemetery.
Mrs. Navrude, nee Adelia J. Carpenter, was born March 25, 1911, in Gratiot, Wisconsin, and was raised by Frank and Rosetta Skimmerhorn.
On January 6, 1926, she married Clyde R. Bolles in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He died August 7, 1958, in Correctionville.
She then married Oscar Navrude March 11, 1962, in Sioux City. He died September 2, 1985, in Onawa.
Adelia had lived in Correctionville for 33 years, then in Sioux City for four years.
After marrying Oscar she lived in Soldier, Iowa, for nine years and Onawa for 15 years. She then returned to Sioux City and had lived here the past four years.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Onawa, and a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons, Clyde, Charles and Duane Bolles, all of Sioux City, two daughters, Mrs. George (Ada) Via of Sioux City and Mrs. LaVern (Ona Mae) Goettsch of Holstein, a stepson, Robert R. Bolles of Ida Grove, a brother, John Carpenter of Palmyra, Wisconsin, and a sister, Laura in Phoenix, Arizona, 20 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and a grandson, Lou Goettsch.

Robert Clyde Bolles, known to his friends as Clyde, was born April 21, 1895, in Lebanon, Missouri, to John and Rebecca Bolles. As a boy he came with his parents to Battle Creek, Iowa, at the age of 14 and then later moved to the Correctionville area. He served with the armed forces of our country during World War I in England and France.
On January 6, 1925, he was united in marriage to Adella Jane Carpenter at Fort Dodge, Iowa, and they moved to a farm near Correctionville. Six children were born to this union, four boys, Duane of Sioux City, Robert of Ida Grove, Clyde and Charles of Lawton, and two girls, Mrs. LaVerne (Ona Mae) Goettsch of Holstein and Mrs. George (Ada) Via of Sioux City.
He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Farmers Coop Oil Assn. four years ago he and his wife moved to Nebraska for a year and then returned and located on a farm near Lawton where he was living at the time of his death.
He passed away Thursday, August 7, 1958, at a Sioux City hospital after a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Archie.
Survivors include the widow, four sons, two daughters, three brothers, Clarence of Cherokee, Ray of San Diego and Ruben of Ontario, Oregon, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Mizer of Sioux City and 14 grandchildren. Services were held Sunday, August 10 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Correctionville with Rev. C.Q. Wallace officiating.
Interment was in the Correctionville Cemetery with military rites at graveside. Wilson-Hull Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
