2286. Ezra Carpenter

Jeffery (Jeff) Jay Carpenter of Binghamton, NY submitted this Carpenter
Descendancy line in October 1998.

NOTE: The following submitted by Robin Oneill 29 Jul 13  rrhx@yahoo.com
...
Ezra Carpenter (1770-1821) and his wife Mary Follett (1770-1846) are my 4th great-grandparents. Their daughter Tryphena (29 July 1800-24 August 1887) and her husband Thomas Comstock (c1796-21 November 1863) are my weak links in my Mayflower Society application and several D. A. R. ancestor supplemental applications. I am in the process of restoring Artemus Comstock’s journals (1848-1888) which established the date of his mother’s birth. Artemus died in South Dakota in 1882 and there is no mention of his mother’s parents in her obituary or death register.

The reviewer for my Mayflower application is asking for a stronger link or several links for Tryphena as the daughter of Ezra Carpenter besides the baptismal record already accepted for her sister Eliza (Carpenter) Westgate. Mary, Eliza, Rhoda, Tryphena and Ezra, Jr. were all baptized on 17 April 1803 as children of Ezra and Mary Carpenter.

Before submitting my application, I had the Mayflower Society reconfirm the acceptability of Eliza (Carpenter) Westgate’s lineage report.

I have found a letter of administration for Ezra’s estate, but no inventory was ever filed. Tryphena was 21 in 1821 and not listed on the guardianship papers filed for Daniel, Zenas, Shepard, Artemus and Tryphasa. I have not yet found any record of Mary (Follett) Carpenter’s will or probate in Susquehanna County. Ezra brother, John Carpenter died in 1838. I have just started working with local researchers to locate a marriage record for Tryphena and Thomas Comstock circa 1821.

I have a local history from 1878 for Niagara County, NY. The Village of Pekin - Cambria Churches, page 233. "Thomas Comstock located on the Pekin road, one mile west of the railroad junction, in 1822, purchasing one hundred acres of the Holland Company. He moved from Susquehanna with an ox team. His son Artemus W. Comstock owns the original homestead. The Comstock cheese factory was established on the farm as a private enterprise, in 1848. It has been and continues popular for the best quality of cheese manufactured, meeting a ready sale."

Subject: Carpenter Family

Hello John,

My name is Carolyn Gibson Langon, we have ancestors on my fathers paternal side that are Carpenters. I live in Pennsylvania and my fathers family was from northeast Pennsylvania where a number of them are buried near our Gibson plot.  In general family research on ancestry (have not pursued this due to time commitment) it appears they link into a long chain of Carpenters.

From my grandmothers information the closest Carpenter name I have is Eliza or Elizabeth Carpenter born 9/14/1797 died 12/30/1880 she married a Westgate which my grandfather was given as his middle name. Milton Westgate Gibson born 11/26/1907 died 5/25/1963 there were a number of Carpenter cousins in the small town they lived in Union Dale, PA. Do not know of any left with the Carpenter name there now.

From a little research I’ve done they came from Rhode Island area. My daughter lives near Providence so we went to the cemetery to see the tombstones many are hard to read. Daniel Carpenter father of Ezra Carpenter who was Eliza/Elizabeth Carpenter father is buried there.

I found this web page with Carpenter information upon a web search after watching Jeopardy last week and the Carpenter name came up.

Interested in the connections and how we fit in to all of this.  I do have photos of tombstones if that is anything someone might be looking for.

Any information you can share would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Carolyn Gibson Langon

Hello John,

Thank you so much for sharing this! I will read through these articles to see the connections.  Both my husband & I find this very fascinating but we do not currently have time to dig to deep with all the different branches. Something we hope to do once retired. Below was from my grandmothers bible records and I have been taking photos of tombstones.

So our line is the Rehoboth, MA line, but is the Daniel Carpenter buried at the Newman Cemetery part of our line? That part I got from Ancestry so wanted to confirm if that is still the Rehoboth line.

Here are our names & dates going backwards from me. If spouses are documented I can send that info.

Carolyn Margaret Gibson Langon 9/7/1959 born Limestone, ME

Father: Roger Alison Gibson 7/20/38 born Union Dale, PA

Grandfather: Milton Westgate Gibson born 11/26/1907 died 5/25/1963 Union Dale, PA Union Dale Cemetery

Great Grandfather: Daniel Barton Gibson born 10/29/1876 died 2/3/1954 Union Dale, PA Dale Cemetery Mausoleum

Great Great Grandfather: (discrepancy on which is the first & which is middle name) William Emmett Gibson born: 3/27/1842 died: 4/28/1927 Wife is Emmeretta Westgate born 9/22/1849 died: 5/7/1901

Great Great Great Grandfather: Sylvenus Westgate born October 1822 died: 2/16/1875  WIFE: Hilda Crandell born 8/2/1822 died: 4/4/1908

Great Great Great Great Grandfather: John Westgate born 6/3/1794 Rhode Island died: 6/2/1872 died Clifford, PA —Wife: Eliza Carpenter Westgate born 9/14/1797  died 12/30/1880

This is from my grandparents records —family bibles-- I no longer have access to them

When I put this into ancestry it gave me Eliza’s parents as Ezra Carpenter & Mary Follett Carpenter which took me to Daniel Carpenter buried in Providence, RI Is that correct?

I’ll send photos in a separate email. If quality does not come through well I can text them to a cell phone if you’d rather. There is one gravestone I need to find out who the care taker is to see if they know who is buried there it only says Carpenter and my grandmother always took care of putting flowers on it but we never asked who it was. Why didn’t we ask?? I don’t know.

Thank you!
Carolyn

Harford, Pa.-Although the discovery of account books of early settlers in Pennsylvania is not unusual, the recent finding of such a book kept by one of the Nine Partners who founded this town in 1790, has greatly stimulated interest in the Harford Sesqui-Centennial celebration to be held her July 3 and 4………….
