The death of Willie L. Bridwell on 4 January 1997 occasioned a surprise.
Willie had appeared nearly destitute in his old age, living in a delapidated
old house, getting his sustenance from "Meals on Wheels" and having his
property taxes paid by a kindly neighbor. Money was found- a lot of money-
nearly 60 thousand in cash- stashed away in various places in his house. An
effort was made to locate his next-of-kin. He seemed to have none! A niece,
Mary Jo (Bridwell) McCrosky, was finally discovered in Ravenswood, West
Virginia. She readily accepted the windfall but declared that she had honestly
never even heard of the man.
