34720. Ernest William Carpenter

2b2f5. Ernest W. Carpenter, born c1912, married by c1940 to Thelma _?_, who was born c1914 in AR, with whom he was enumerated in Vicksburg, Warren Co. MS in 1940 with no children yet born to them -- he was annotated as an implement salesman with two years of college education ... Terry L. Carpenter

Ernest William Carpenter, Sr., born in Hamburg, AR. I don’t know who my grandfather's parents were, but had heard that they raised 13 kids together, and lived in Hamburg. My grandfather was killed by a drunk driver near Monroe, LA, while driving home from church in 1952. He graduated from Northeast Louisiana University with a degree in Agriculture, and had an International Harvester dealership. CWC
MORE:
My grandfather’s occupation/education: I believe it’s an error. He was stated to have owned and operated an International Harvester dealership, having brought in his brother(s) to the business. As for being identified as an implement salesman, I found a copy of the census record for his block in Vicksburg on the internet, and all his neighbors are doctors and lawyers. How many salesmen lived in neighborhoods like that during the Great Depression?
Chris W. Carpenter
Ft. Worth, TX

MORE: From TLC
The 1940 census shows Ernest's and Thelma's neighbors on either side as a grocer, a saleswoman, a salesman, and a dry cleaning checker in the two households preceding their entry, and a bookkeeper, a welder and a doctor's office attendant in the two following. Thelma is working as a retail dry goods saleswoman. There's one doctor and one lawyer on the same page. It seems to be a neighborhood of mixed trade and professional people. International Harvester was primarily an agricultural equipment manufacturer, which would include implements, so implement salesman may have been where he got his start, before he acquired the dealership.
