tracing this line from Mass. to Maine to Minnesota yet. I have the copies
of the Censuses from Minnesota and Maine showing the family to Marshall P.
But nothing beyond.
Hope this gives you info and maybe you can open a new avenue for me.
Thank you, JohnDavid Hascup.

I have found the link for Seth Carpenter - Walter Prime Carpenter-Marshall
W. Carpenter. I will be going to Minneapolis in March and will complete the
research for the line from Maine to Minnesota. Since some of the line also
comes to Washington I will begin working here. Hope this adds to your
records.
Thank you for all your work,

resident of the city for over fifteen years, died yesterday noon, of
combined dropsy and heart disease. The deceased was 83 years of age, and
was the father of Mrs. J. B. Bassett. His wife, at the age of 82 years,
survives him, together with his two children, Mrs. J. B. Bassett of this
city, and Mr. Marshall Carpenter of Orono. Mr. Carpenter was well known to
all old settlers, although he never engaged actively in business in this
State. He served in Vermont and New York regiments during the war of 1812,
and was a prominent politician in his native State - Massachusetts. The
remains will be deposited in a vault, awaiting interment in Layman's
cemetery. The time of the funeral services will be announced
hereafter.Source: Minneapolis  Tribune, March 23, 1875Note: There would
appear to be a conflict on Walter P's home state, but it should be noted
that Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820, when it separated from
that state. .

Carpenters in MinnesotaJohn,I can give a you a great deal of help. I am
another Seth Carpenter's greatgrandson. Walter P. Carpenter was Seth's
Uncle. Walter P. and his brotherJohn (Seth's father) are buried in
Minneapolis. Walter P. and John's fatherwas the Seth Carpenter from
Attleboro, Mass. He move to Maine in 1893 fromSutton, Mass. The Carpenters
in Maine were a very interesting family. Manymigrated to Minnesota in the
mid 1800's. A number of family members migratedto the Seattle area later in
the century. Three of my great grandfather'sdaughters eventually landed in
Seattle (Delia Carpenter, Cora Toby(Carpenter) and another whose name I
don't have close at hand. Cora Toby wasmarried to a fellow by the name of
Simeon Toby who own the Rainier StateBank in Seattle during the early part
of this century. I've been trying tofind some information of them, but
haven't found much yet. They lived on astreet named Seward Park. I don't
have the street number handy at themoment.I'd love to keep this exchange
going. Tell me more about your research. I'vebeen in contact with some of
the Carpenter's who are still back East.Reed Carpenter-----Original

RE: Carpenters in MinnesotaJohn,I should also mention that your wife and
her parent's are the firstCarpenters from Minnesota that I've found who are
closely related. From myoffice I look over Saint Anthony Falls in downtown
Minneapolis and can seethe spot where they all worked when they arrived
from Maine and I drive bywhat was the family farm (by marriage of Walter
P's daughter to JoelBassett) every morning. It is now the Federal Reserve
Bank of Minneapolis. My Great Grandmother is buried with the Bassetts at
Lakewood Cemetery inMinneapolis, where many other family members are
buried. As I mentioned inmy earlier message, Walter P. and John are buried
in the Carpenter familyplot in Minneapolis at Pioneers and Soldiers
Cemetery at Lake Street andCedar Avenue.I get more excited with each
reading of your message. You have opened awhole new line of research for
me. Thank you for that. My phone home numberis (763)783-2178. I can be
reached there in the evenings if you wish tocall.Reed Carpenter.

2419. John Carpenter

Number 1463 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 210.
No family listed in CM.   EXTENSIVE NOTES BELOW, Thanks to Paul N. Carpenter.
John represented Patten in the State of Maine Legislature.  He was residing in
Lincoln, ME in 1820.  Latter he moved to Minnieapolis, MN.
Paul N. Carpenter of ME (1990) provided details on John Carpenter's descendants.

BOOKLET: One Branch of the Carpenter Family - A Brief History by Paul N.
Carpenter 1990.   John Carpenter was born Sept. 20, 1793 in Paris, Maine.
Amos Carpenter's history lists John as born in Patten. This is not
possible since Patten did not have its first settlers until after 1620. The
history also says that he lived in Lincoln, Maine, in 1820, and that he
later moved to Minneapolis, Minn.] # 1463 John married Joannah Ford (B.
1795 ) of Sumner, Maine, July 14, 1815. Amos Carpenter's history does
not follow the family beyond this point. Later data is based an the
History of Paris, Maine by William Lapham and Silas Maxim; the Maine
Archives records of Paris, Patten, and Linneus, Maine; and other
historical documents noted in the list of references.
The Penobscot Registry of Deeds shows' that John Carpenter bought
from Amos Patten " 167 acres on the Aroostook Road, Township 4 Range 6
(Patten), west of the East line lot # 30 Sept. 9, 1836 ". A house was
built and stood on this land until about 1985 when it was burned by an
arsonist. This lot is about one mile north of the Patten cemetery on
the west side of the road. This land is presently owned (1990) by Irene
Bradford of Patten. Irene has provided much historical information of
Patten, as well as a photograph of John Carpenter, which was probably
taken about 1850.
(con.)
It is recorded that Amos Patten, a coastwise shipper of Bangor,
Maine, bought the township of Patten in 1820. He hired Ira Fish to go
to the area to start a settlement. Fish went there by way of the
Penobscot and Mattawamkeag rivers to Mattawamkeag Lake, thence to what
is now Island Falls, up Fish Stream to Patten. Later, a trail was
blazed through the woods from Mattawamkeag village probably through
Molunkus, Benedicta, Sherman, and Stacyville to Patten.
Presumably John and his family followed this route. It is
recorded that this was the second family to settle in Patten and that
they arrived prior to 1838. The Patten census of 1850 showed the
household of John Carpenter, age 56, farmer, to consist of:

1.John Carpenter was living in Patten in 1870. His wife Joanna
had died Dec. 7, 1867 and apparantly Seth and his family was
living with him. I suggest that John died at a date unknown
to us and was buried beside his wife Joanna, and no one saw
to having a stone placed there.
2.Lafayette, listed in the household of John in 1850, was
obviously too young to be the son of John and Joanna. He is
listed in both 1860 and 1870 in the household of Albion,
thus should be listed as the son of Albion.
3. Chloe, whose Patten cemetery marker lists "Chloe C. -
Daughter of John and Joanna Carpenter Died April 25,
1876 age 10 years 5 months 15 days " is listed in the 1870
census as daughter of Seth, age 13. Since numbers on the
stone are nearly illegible, probably the age should read
Age 18 years 5 months 15 days.
(con.)
Simeon, born Oct. 5, 1831, lived in Patten throughout his life.
The 1870 Census listed his occupation as lumberman. Simeon married
Emeline Scribner, sister to Daniel Scribner and aunt to Caleb Scribner,
founder of the Lumbermans Museum in Patten, trustee of Patten Academy,
and school teacher.
The children of Simeon and Emeline and their spouses were:
Charles Arthur  Jan 25, 1863 Delia Hope Bubar
Ira Daniel      Dec 14, 1868 Ella Ruth
Mina                         Lewis Jacques
Amy                          Charles Darling
As previously shown, the 1870 Patten census listed Dora A. and Ida E.
in the Simeon Carpenter household. Simeon's daughters were known to
the family as Amy and Mina. Why they are listed as Dora and Ida on
the census is not known to us. Amy and Mina both lived in Auburn.
Neither had children. Both are buried in Auburn. Mina worked as a
seamstress and dressmaker at B. Peck's in Lewiston.
Ira lived in Patten. He became a dealer in horses, supplying
horses for woods work, for which there was great demand. He was a
somewhat " boom or bust " individual. Much of his life he was
financially well to do. Occasionally he had very little. Ira also had
contrasting personalities. He spent much of his time in his office in
his horse barn - a barn big enough to hold about a hundred horses.
His office had an attached room equipped with a large round table
ideal for card playing. These games were not played for pleasure, and
were quite continuous.
Ira was not noted for his church attendance, but the ministers
were not surprised to sometimes find a barrel of flour, sugar, or meat
left at their door. It was commonly known where the provisions came
from, but never admitted to by Ira.
Ira married Ella Ruth in Linneus, Maine. They had one child,
Annie born Oct 8, 1882. Annie married Manson Brown, a dentist and
later an undertaker. They had one child, Ruth, who married Floyd
Hewitt.

CHARLES ARTHUR CARPENTER AND DESCENDANTS
Charles Arthur Carpenter was born Jan. 25, 1863. He married Delia
Hope Bubar Mar. 13, 1890, in Linneus, Maine. Delia was the daughter of
Frederick Hammond Bubar, a Baptist-minister. Charles, as did his
brothers and sisters, attended Patten Academy. Since school at that
time was a somewhat irregular affair, it is difficult to determine how
far a student progressed. He and Ira were stage drivers out of Bar
Harbor for a time. He worked in Linneus in a mill processing hemlock
bark for dying processes. This is probably where he met Delia.
Their children and spouses were:
Ella Vallie     10/27/90 -    10/10/81       Frank Hamilton
Amy Mable        9/11/92 -     7/23/89   Ora Gilpatrick
Frances Willard  5/28/94 -    10/19/80  Dr. Loren Carter
Fred Hammond     9/28/96 -     8/20/59   M. Phillipa Joscelyn
Roland Joy       2/13/99 -    1/11/89   Izetta E. Lidstone
Lewis Jacques    4/ 5/05 -     3/28/87   Charlotte Augustinus
Paul Nathaniel   6/ 9/10 -         Elaine E. Shaw
Ella, Amy, Frances and Fred were born in Linneus. Roland, Lewis,
and Paul were born in Patten. Charles moved to Patten between 1894 and
1899. Deeds show that he bought property in Patten in 1901.
(con).
In Patten, Charles and Ira owned a farm on the Happy Corner road,
later called the Harrington farm (they sold to Joseph Harrington). At
the same time they sold that farm, Ira went into town and Charles
bought a farm at the corner of Happy Corner and Frenchville roads,
where he lived until his death in 1921. The farm was sold by Delia in
the fall of 1921.
Charles worked as a farmer. During the winter months the horses
were used for work in the woods. Usually one team was rented for woods
work or with a teamster for the winter. The other team stayed on the
farm and Charles would contract to deliver supplies for woods
operators, preferably not more than 112 days travel into the woods.
This allowed him to be home at night.
It was an one of these trips into the woods that he developed a
strangulated hernia, which was not readily reduced. He was brought
from the woods, went by train to Bangor where surgery was performed.
Gangrene developed, and there being no anti-biotics at that time, he
died at age 58. Delia died Sept 22, 1926.
At the time of his death, Charles left his wife Delia, seven
children, and seven grandchildren. In the years since then, the
number of his descendants has grown substantially. At the time of
this writing, they include:
7 children
20 grandchildren
63 great grandchildren
78 great great grandchildren
(con.)

HISTORY OF THE Town of Pittsford, Vermont
WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES AND FAMILY RECORDS
BY A. M. GAVERLY, M. D. - RUTLAND: TUTTLE & CO., PRINTERS.
1872.
The following sketch of his life is taken from the History of
the Town of Pittsford, VT, printed in 1872: -

While in Rehoboth, and after serving in the army, Abraham
"commenced studying for the Ministry.  After his marriage he
went to reside in Killingly,,CT  From here they moved to
Plainfield, NH in 1774.  He was there ordained and installed
over the Congregational Church, and was the first minister in
that town.  From Plainfield he removed to Whipple Hollow, VT
About  the year 1790 the people of Orange Parish employed Rev.
Abraham Carpenter of Plainfield, NH as their minister.  The
services on the occasion of his installation were held at the
house of Asa Stevens, it being before the meeting house was
finished.  Mr. Carpenter was a very devoted Christian, and a
faithful pastor;  under his ministry the church prospered.  Few
pastors have secured a stronger hold upon the affections of his
people.  He died after a short illness, and his remains were
interred in the parish burying ground."

In the history of Windham ,,CT, page 95, is the
following: "In 1768, Abraham Carpenter was ordained into the
office of Deacon by the laying on of hands, and dismissed after
five years service to become the pastor of the church of
Plainfield, N. H."

A brief account of his labors in Plainfield, N. H. is found on
page 47, of The New Hampshire Churches, by Rev. Robert F.
Lawrence, published in 1856, as follows: "In 1773 or 1774, Rev.
Abraham Carpenter, a 'strict Congregationalist,' was settled
according to the rules of the denomination in Plainfield,
without any action of the town. In March, 1779, the town voted
to accept Mr. Carpenter as the minister of the town. He received
the right of land, consisting of 360 acres. He continued to
preach in town eight or ten years longer, In his own kitchen and
in other private houses in the winter, and in the open air or in
a Meeting-house having neither doors or windows, in the summer.
In 1782 there was more than usual attention to religion, and
several neighboring ministers came and assisted him. After a few
years he was dismissed by his own congregation, and became
pastor of a church in Rutland, VT where he died and where his
grave is. He was considered a decided Christian, loving God and
rejoicing to be the servant of his people in preaching the
Gospel and teaching the youth. In a quiet and sober manner he
finished his ministry and went, we believe, to receive the
reward of one who had been 'faithful in a few things.'"

Extract of a letter written to E. H. Carpenter, Manchester, N.
H., by Rev. C. C. Mclntire, D. D., dated Nov.14, 1889: "After a
little search I found the grave or at least the Stone, of Rev.
Abraham Carpenter. The ground was in a beautiful, picturesque
spot, but is not very well cared for. The stone is a large-sized
slab standing upright and firm and is in a very good state of
preservation. On the stone is engraved an oval band, and running
around it are these words

This,,sleeping dust again shall rise
When Gabriel's trump shall shake the skies."

Within the oval is the inscription :-"To the pious memory of the
Rev. Abraham Carpenter, who we trust fell asleep in Jesus Aug.
21st, 1797, in the 58th year of his age." Below the oval and
near the base

"With mildest accents from his tongue
He often taught the listening throng
In silent notes still hear him say

Prepare for death and come away."

During the next ten years, the agitation occasioned by the
war having subsided, the population of the town went on grad
ually increasing, while new openings were continually made in
the forest, a greater breadth of soil was brought under the
influence of husbandry, and the machinery of civil government
was moving gracefully along. This prosperous state of things,
combined with the natural fertility of soil, made the township
a desirable one for enterprising young men, who wished to
make pleasant homes for themselves in some promising region.
Among the number who located here in 1790, we find
Abraham Drury, John Woodward, Samuel Copley, Phineas
Hammond, Abraham Carpenter, Adget Lathrop and Nathan
B. Graham.

Abraham Carpenter was born in Rehoboth, Mass., Sep
tember 23, 1739, and in the French war he enlisted in the
army and was sent through the wilderness to Crown Point
Fort, where he remained through one summer, acting, the most
of that time, as one of the guard at that fortress. How long
he remained in the army we are not informed, but when his
term of service had expired, he returned to Rehoboth and
commenced studying for the ministry. He married Elizabeth
Bliss, also of Rehoboth, who was born April 5, 1738, and after
their marriage they went to reside in Killingly, Conn., from
which town they removed to Plainfield, N. H., in 1774. He
was there ordained and settled over a Congregational Church,
the first in the township. From Plainfield he removed to
"Whipple Hollow, and of his labors there we shall have some
thing to say hereafter.

DEACONS.
There were no regularly appointed deacons of the Baptist
Church till September 30, 1786, when Caleb Hendee,* Abel
Stevensf and Colburn Preston were elected to this office. The
other deacons have been :
Samuel Hendee and Ezra Spencer, elected October 16, 1841.
Roswell Woodcock and James R. Smith,}: elected February
11, 1843.
Samuel Hendee and Roswell Woodcock are the present
acting deacons.
In the year 1788, an effort was made by some individuals
living in that part of Pittsford known as Whipple Hollow,
together with persons living in that vicinity, in the north part
of Rutland, to form a religious society, and they petitioned the
Legislature for an act of incorporation. The prayer of the
petitioners was not granted, but they formed an association and
took the name of " Orange Parish." They held religious meet
ings, and occasionally had preaching by ministers living in the
vicinity. About the year 1790, they employed Rev. Abraham
Carpenter, from Plainfield, N. H., as their preacher. We have

already given some account of the early life of Mr. Carpenter.
Soon after he came to Pittsford a church was organized, and he
was installed as its pastor. The services on this occasion were
held at the house of Asa Stevens,* and Rev. Lemuel Haynes,
of Rutland, and Rev. Ithamar Hibbard, of Poultney, assisted
in the exercises.
Mr. Carpenter was a very devoted Christian, and a faithful
pastor, and under his ministry the church prospered. Few
pastors have secured a stronger hold upon the affections of his
people. He died, after a short illness, August 21, 1797, and
his remains were interred in the parish burying ground. His
wife, Elizabeth, died March 30, 1830, aged 92 years.f
After the death of Mr. Carpenter, the parish secured the
services of Rev, Mr. Norton, who was a man of some talent,
but wanting in characteristics so essential to success. Under
his ministry the religious interest in the society gradually
abated, dissensions sprung up among the members, the minister
soon left, and the meetings were discontinued.

Re: ANALYSIS for Ephraim Bliss 3rd New Patriot Application AIR

Dear Ms. Teyssier,

In response to your letter of 9 September 2019 requesting documentation to confirm dates and places of death for Ephraim Bliss 3rd and Hannah Carpenter in Generation 7, as well as information distinguishing which Hannah Carpenter of all likely candidates of this name born in Rehoboth was the one who married Ephraim Bliss 3rd.  I will address the latter issue first.

Hannah Carpenter was probably born in Rehoboth 16 Mar 1757 to Peter Carpenter and Rachall Blanding/Blanden, based on information above. According to MA Town & Vital Records, Hannah died in Savoy Berkshire Co MA on 18 Aug 1798

I posit that Ephraim Bliss 3rd died in Savoy Berkshire Co MA on or about 8 May 1822, based on Genealogy of the Bliss Family from about the year 1550 to 1880 (pub. 1881), Land Records, and U.S. Federal Censuses for 1810 and 1820

Hannah Carpenter, Wife of Ephraim Bliss 3rd

Vital Records of Rehoboth lists numerous Hannah Carpenters born in Rehoboth Bristol Co MA who could have feasibly been the Hannah Carpenter who married Ephraim Bliss on 23 Dec 1779, when he was aged 26. Possibilities include the following, born between 1746 and 1765, aged 7 years older to 12 years younger than Ephraim:

Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth 9 May 1746 to Daniell Carpenter and Susannah
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth 1 Jan 1751 to Eliphalett Carpenter and Freelove
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth 14 Jul 1755 to Jonathan Carpenter and Abigail Walker
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth 26 Jan 1756 to Jedediah Carpenter and Hannah Allen/Allyn
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth 16 Mar 1757 to Peter Carpenter and Rachall Blanding/Blanden
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth 17 Mar 1764 to Elisha Carpenter & Esther Greenwood
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth 20 May 1765 to Eliphalet(t) Carpenter and Freelove Chaffe(e was the second Hannah in this family, probably named for her deceased sister above in (2)Vital Records of Rehoboth

The wife of Ephraim Bliss 3rd had eight children: Vital Records of Rehoboth

Child Birth Date Birthplace
Mary 18 Oct 1780 Rehoboth
Ephraim (4th) 17 Aug 1782 Rehoboth
Christopher 15 Feb 1785 Rehoboth
Shubael 1 Mar 1787 Rehoboth
Hannah (1st, died young) 10 Mar 1789 Rehoboth
Laruna (or Laranna), son 10 Jun 1792 Rehoboth
Hannah (2nd) 21 Jun 1794 Rehoboth
Ira 26 Mar 1797 Rehoboth

She died 18 Aug 1798 in Savoy Berkshire Co MA, where her husband remarried in 1800, had two more children by Rebecca Smith in 1800 and 1802, and where he died after 1820. US Fed Census 1820 The question is, which Hannah Carpenter of those born in Rehoboth was the Hannah Carpenter who married Ephraim Bliss 3rd, born in 1753.

Reviewing names of siblings and children that might suggest a family connection from Vital Records of Rehoboth, I found some correlation. I graded each candidate’s eligibility as follows, correlating to numbers above:

Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth in 1746: Eliminated from consideration
Died at age 17; could not have had eight children, as Ephraim’s wife Hannah did
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth in 1751: Eliminated from consideration
Died before 1765, when sister Hannah was born (see #7 below)
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth in 1755: Eliminated from consideration, ~24 years at marriage
Had a brother named Ephraim, though the son of Ephraim Bliss 3rd was likely named after his father. Hannah Carpenter born July 14, 1755, married Amaziah Peck in 1779, had no children named Ephraim, and died 3 Jan 1840 as Hannah Peck.Find A Grave Mem #123370279
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth in 1756: Less likely candidate, ~23 years at marriage.
No names of this Hannah match those of her siblings or those of Ephraim Bliss
Perhaps married Calvin Jacobs in 1776RI Vital Extracts, 1636-1899 If so, she could not have married Ephraim in 1779. Jacobs died in 1810Find A Grave Mem #82813043. According to his Will, his children’s names were Hannah, Lucy, Olive, Polly, Clairanne, Nancy, and son Loranze, though spelling was difficult to decipher.
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth in 1757: Most likely candidate, ~22 years at marriage
Mary, 1st child of Ephraim and Hannah, is likely named after Hannah’s closest sister Mary, who also had an aunt and grandmother named Mary. Ephraim (4th), first son of Ephraim and Hannah, was likely named to continue three generations of the Ephraim Bliss name, implying a stronger connection than the brother in (3)
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth in 1764: Eliminated from consideration, aged ~15 years at Ephraim’s date of marriage and died after Ephraim’s date of remarriage. No names of siblings match those of Ephraim Bliss’s. Perhaps married Howland Kimball
Hannah Carpenter born in Rehoboth in 1765: Eliminated from consideration, aged ~14 years at marriage
Had a brother named Ephraim but inconclusive; likely named after her older sister Hannah, born 1751 and died young; perhaps married Isaac Barnes, Attleboro

Extensive research revealed no other clues for a variety of reasons:

Ephraim Bliss 3rd would not have included his first wife in his Will, since he remarried in 1800, and died 8 May 1822 at age 68, after first wife Hannah died in 1798
Birth records from the 1700s show no birth date, maternal grandparents, or maiden name of the mother
Marriage records from the 1700s show no birth dates or parents of the wife to confirm identity
Neither Marriage or Census records from early 1800s show relevant information to establish identity of mother through records of her children
Death records from the 1700s show only the wife’s married last name and no birth record information
Find A Grave shows no relevant information to identify Hannah Carpenter, wife of Ephraim Bliss
Family records on Ancestry or Family Search purporting to identify wife’s parents are not substantiated
Census records from the 1700s show no name, birth place, birth date, or parents of any wife
Genealogy of the Bliss Family from about the year 1550 to 18803 shows birth, marriage, and death dates, spouse, and children that concur with Genealogy of the Bliss Family4, as cited in my original DAR Supplement, but neither source cite primary records to prove whether the Hannah Carpenter born in 1756 or 1757 is the wife of Ephraim Bliss

After extensive hours of research, I was unable to definitively prove the lineage of the wife of Ephraim Bliss, other than her maiden name was Hannah Carpenter, born in Rehoboth, probably in 1756 or 1757. The birth date of 1757 concords with Genealogy of the Bliss Family from about the year 1550 to 1880, whose compiler might have had access to accurate unpublished information on Bliss family members since he was born just 42 years later. I am hoping you find this an acceptably accurate proof for someone born in the 1700s, given the above limitations of the records available. Moreover, my lineage to the Patriot goes through her husband.

Nonetheless, enclosed please find record MA Town & Vital Records, 1620-1988 confirming the date and place of death for Hannah (Carpenter) Bliss, wife of Ephraim Bliss 3rd, before his remarriage 19 months later on 13 Mar 1800.

Ephraim Bliss 3rd

Research on Ephraim Bliss 3rd was complicated by the number of Ephraim Blisses found in colonial America, both in Rehoboth and Berkshire County, in my own line and others. My extensive search for death records found no grave, death certificate or record for an Ephraim Bliss born in 1753, who died about 1822.  Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriotsp. 90 lists a grave marker for Ephraim Bliss 3rd in Rehoboth, MA, where he was born. But I posit this is merely a memorial marker set by Rehoboth to claim Ephraim 3rd as a patriot son.  I believe he was actually buried in Berkshire County in western Massachusetts, for these reasons:

Birth records of his children indicate he moved from Rehoboth, where his children were born, to Berkshire County, where his first wife died and where he married second wife Rebecca SmithMA Town & Vital Records, 1620-1988
Census records for 1810 and 1820 U.S. Federal Census Collection show he was in Savoy Berkshire County MA at age 57 and 67
Genealogy of the Bliss Family from about the year 1550 to 1880 p. 205 shows a death date of 8 May 1822, which is in accordance with the Census records showing him living near his sons in Savoy in 1810 and 1820.  He was perhaps buried on his own land, explaining why the researched gravesites in Berkshire County show no record of a marker with his name

Indeed, I searched every site listed on the Berkshire County Cemetery Project, which reported no stone found for Ephraim Bliss 3rd, even in the “Bowen-Bliss-Smith Cemetery” in Cheshire, which is adjacent to Savoy, his home identified on the Censuses. Cemeteries were identified by town, church, family name, or individual stones, especially older ones or those for babies.  This description from a graveyard in Cheshire suggests what could have happened to the gravestone of Ephraim Bliss 3rd:

This cemetery has long been forgotten and buried on rural farmland. In order to access it, you must go through the backyard of a family living on Wells Rd. The path to the cemetery is guarded by a Rotweiler, and although the owners say he is friendly, I recommend calling them ahead of time if you plan on visiting. They do like visitors to the cemetery. Once you sneak past "pooch" (not his real name) you climb up a hill and through some brush, you walk into the cemetery. If you visit it in the fall or the early spring it seems very stark and forgotten. Visiting the cemetery in May, I was shocked by how beautiful the yellow wildflowers made the cemetery. A great wish of mine would be to clean up the cemetery. 10 years ago, Peter White visited the cemetery after the town of Cheshire had done their cleanup for the 200-year celebration. He took a pole and began to prod the ground. He found two stones buried in the earth. Ricky Leab, a Berkshire Athenaeum librarian, checked a recording of this cemetery done in the early 1900s. They never recorded Thomas's stone. Thomas's stone had been buried for over 75 years.
[From Jenks Cemetery posting, Berkshire Co Gen Web Project]

Other county cemeteries cite stones missing altogether or sunk underground. In the adjacent town of Florida in Berkshire County, the Rice Burial Ground report cites this:

There is one gravestone, that of Lieut. Luke Rice, and one unmarked fieldstone in this lot. It is located about 7/10ths of a mile north on Church Road, off of Route 2, the Mohawk Trail. The plot is on the right (east) side of the road and is easily seen and accessible, surrounded by a rock wall. The area is moss covered and there are mounds and sunken indentations that indicate there could be several other unmarked burials here.

Numerous old cemeteries are listed in Savoy and Cheshire, many with only a few graves, suggesting that the deceased were initially buried on private lands owned by the local family or families, such as the Tomb, Tower, and Turner Cemeteries in Savoy to name a few. Additionally, dozens of gravestones listed in the Main Street Cemetery in nearby Dalton and Saint Bridgets Cemetery, also in Berkshire County, are missing dozens of last names and dates, perhaps because lichen and age have rendered many stones illegible.

Census records of 1810 and 1820 list “Ephraim Bliss” in Savoy Berkshire Co MA.  Although these early Census records do not list names of family members to more definitively prove identity, the following suggests he was living in Savoy on a farm at his death, sometime after 1820:

1810 U.S. Federal Census:

Children of Ephraim 3rd would be the following ages:
Mary, aged 30
Ephraim 4th, aged 28
Christopher, aged 25
Shubael, aged 23
Laurena (son), aged 18
Hannah, aged 16
Ira, aged 13
Rebeckah, aged 8 (by 2nd wife Rebeckah)

These ages and genders do not quite concord with Ephraim 3rd or 4th nor with the handwritten Census, which is truncated, but the separate listings for Ephraim (aged 57) and Ephraim Jr (aged 22) indicate they maintained separate households, as the second wife of Ephraim 3rd was alive until 1817. Ephraim 4th married Olive Ingraham in 1806. Genealogy of the Bliss Family p. 377 indicates their son William was aged 4 and daughter Lydia was aged 2 in 1810. They may have also housed the youngest children of Ephraim 3rd, Ira aged 13 and/or Rebeckah aged 8, as well as non-family members.

1820 U.S. Federal Census:

Sons of Ephraim 3rd are listed as living in the same town of Savoy in 1820:
Ephraim, aged 38
Shubael, aged 33
Laurena, aged 28

N.B. Ephraim “Jr” was probably Ephraim 4th at the time of the both the 1810 and 1820 Census, was married and head of household, and presumably has his father Ephraim 3rd living with him by 1820, along with 6 persons under age 16, mostly women, no slaves, but three engaged in agriculture, implying a busy household. So, if his father allegedly died two years later in 1822, they might well have buried him on their own farmland. He was widowed by then, after his 2nd wife Rebecca died in 1817. I found a U.S. War Bounty Land Warrant, dated 1820, for “E. Bliss,” assigned to “heirs of E. Bliss,” but no definitive proof this was for “Ephraim Bliss 3rd”.

Land Records provide an additional clue that Ephraim Bliss 3rd died about 1822. The deed transfers Lot 157 in Savoy Berkshire County Massachusetts within the family:

Deed Dated Grantee Grantor Location   Alleg’d Grantor Death Date
May 1794 Ephraim Bliss Nathan Shearman Lot 157              Orig purchase by EB Jr
Nov 1805 Ephraim Bliss et al Ephraim Bliss Jr Lot 157 EB Jr died July 1804
May 1823 Heirs of Ephraim Bliss et al Shubael Bliss Lot 157 EB 3rd died~May 1822
Dec 1824 Heirs of Ephraim Bliss et al Christopher Bliss Lot 157 EB 3rd died~May 1822 Oct 1828 Christopher Bliss Ephraim Bliss (4th?) Lot 157 EB 3rd died~May 1822

With four generations using the name ‘Ephraim Bliss,” it is difficult to know for sure which Ephraim is which. However, Shubael and Christopher were the second and third oldest sons of Ephraim 3rd.  Ephraim Bliss Jr, father of Ephraim Bliss 3rd died in July 1804. Upon his death his farm passed down to “heirs of Ephraim Bliss et al,” which may have included his oldest son, Ephraim Bliss 3rd and his three other sons Benjamin, Obadiah, and Charles. My guess is, his oldest son Ephraim 3rd ran the farm. Regardless, the 1824 deed to Christopher Bliss after the death of his father, Ephraim 3rd,  allegedly in 1822, specifies land “being one fourth part of the farm that my father Ephraim Bliss late of Savoy…possessed of, known by Lot No 157.” Additional research attempted to establish exact distribution without definitive or relevant answers. Without getting lost in the details, this Deed signed 24 April 1824 establishes that Ephraim Bliss 3rd died before that date.

I thought finding probate papers might further prove a date and/or place of death for Ephraim 3rd. When I initially found none, I thought perhaps Berkshire County was too far west to have up-to-date legal services during his lifetime.  He moved to Berkshire County only three years after it was incorporated in 1797. According to Wikipedia,
Savoy began its existence within the Massachusetts Colony  as part of "Northern Berkshire Township #6"…The town was officially incorporated in 1797…
The earliest related writing found is entitled History of the Town of Savoy by I. E. Miller, published by H. E. Millek, West Cummington, Mass., dated 1879:
Some of the older families in the south part of the town,
are Ingrahams, Bowkers, Biteses, Blisses, and Sturtevants… [History of Savoy, p. 10]

Given its fledgling status, Savoy had few lawyers, even by the latter 1800s:
Savoy cannot boast of the number of her sons in the le-
gal profession, but what may be wanting in quantity is am-
ply made up in quality. … [History of Savoy, p. 23]

That said, massmayflower.org provided an index to probate records from Berkshire County that included an 1822 reference to Ephraim Bliss, but the procured documents, which I enclose, were not related to Ephraim Bliss 3rd (likely to his brother Charles’s children).  This database claims to hold probate file papers from 1761-1917 for Berkshire County, MA, supplied by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Archives, and managed online by New England Historic Genealogical Society, so I have little hope that a trip to Massachusetts would uncover any probate papers that would produce a more definitive date or place for Ephraim Bliss 3rd.

Conclusion

Please accept the above information and enclosed documents as sufficient proof to admit Ephraim Bliss 3rd as a bonafide Patriot in the DAR database. His service should not go unrecognized because records of the 1700s or early 1800s failed to include decisive information on the precise identity of Hannah Carpenter, other than that he did indeed marry a Hannah Carpenter of Rehoboth who bore him eight children. While Genealogy of the Bliss Family from about the year 1550 to 1880 does not cite primary written records, it offers information that might well have been handed down from only two generations removed.

My connection to this Patriot is through Christopher Bliss to Ephraim Bliss 3rd, not through Hannah Carpenter’s line. As much as Hannah’s line might offer another possible Patriot to research, my direct lineage to Ephraim Bliss 3rd is not dependent on identifying which Hannah Carpenter was his wife.

Ephraim Bliss’s grave has not yet been located and is likely buried somewhere by itself on the former family farmland. His exact place and date of death remains unknown, but can be estimated by land transfers and the 1881 genealogy until a grave is found.  I hope this elusive detail will not prevent his inclusion in the DAR database, as it will further delay recognition of his service, along with that of his father and grandfather – an impressive three-generation trio of Patriots.

For clarity in the DAR records, please use “3rd” for this Patriot, rather than “Jr.,” because I hope to prove that his father and grandfather were also Patriots, to be designated “Ephraim Bliss Jr.” and “Ephraim Bliss Sr.” to clarify their identities, unless you suggest otherwise. These Ephraims have definitive dates and places of birth, marriage, and death, already researched. Generations of Ephraim Blisses promise to confuse future researchers, as elder Ephraims die and Ephraims Jr’s drop the “Jr” designation and become senior heads of households, but the designations of “Sr,” “Jr,” and “3rd” should suffice for clarifying these three generations of Patriots for our purposes.

Thank you for your consideration and efforts on reviewing this deserving Patriot. After extensive research I am at a loss as to where else to search for more definitive answers. I hope my explanations suffice until new evidence becomes available. For now, please advise if I have left any stone unturned.

Very truly yours,

Hope C. Bliss
