NOTES: SAMUEL Carpenter, number 1518 in the Carpenter Memorial
was born about 1780 in Norton, MA.  He married Tiley Burt of Sutton, MA
on October 6, 1806 and they had 10 children. Samuel died October 1,
1826 in Northbridge and Tiley died October 27, 1828 in Northbridge.
Both are buried in Lackey Cemetery. The children were:
Betsey, born May 12, 1808 in Northbridge and died July 4, 1839 in Northbridge.
She never married and is also buried in Lackey Cemetery.
Jonathan Carpenter, born November 17, 1809 in Northbridge, MA. He married a
Candice Peirce on October 9, 1832 in Northbridge, and he
died August 15, 1837 in Northbridge. He is also buried in Lackey Cemetery.

2506. Daniel Carpenter

Number 1521 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 216.
A veteran of the War of 1812. He moved to Ohio around 1830.
He and his wife settled in Seneca, Ontario, NY and raised several sons on their
farm.  They both died in Hinkley and were burided in Litchfield, Medina county,
Ohio.

DEATH:  Father and his son, Daniel, died the same day?  27 Mar 1839.  The will below indicates that this Daniel's death was between Feb. 1839 (addenda date) and May 27, 1839 (probate date). This fits with the death date given.

WILL OF DANIEL CARPENTER
To his beloved wife Hannah $1500, plus house, household goods, horse & carriage.
To his son James H.  $1000 to be paid when he reaches 21.  Hannah to be guardian with expenses for his maintenance and education provided from interest on the account.  After debts are paid, the rest of his estate is to
be divided equally among his children:  Daniel, Nancy Southerland, George, Abdul B. and James H.
The executors are to be his sons Daniel and George.  Signed by Daniel Carpenter of Hopewell, Medina Co., OH July 13, 1833 and witnessed by John Price and John Spangle of Hopewell.
A later addendum gives to his son James by deed, half of the farm situated in Litchfield, Medina Co and specifies that the children of Nancy are to be given her share upon her death.    dated Feb. 1839
The will was filed for probate May 27, 1839 (FHL film 423849 v. B 1832-1842  p. 157-160.
The Estate disposition was made May 30, 1839 with an accounting of property and money owned and owed.  One mortgage was held from a William Kelly in Greece, Monroe Co., NY perhaps the place from which they had come. (FHL film  423850 v. C 1839-1848 p. 379-381.)

A book at Seattle Public Library:  Newspaper Abstracts Huron Co., Ohio 1822-1835 by Henry Timman, 1974
lists the marriage of Daniel Carpenter to Julia Washburn, Oct. 8, 1835.  in Fitchville.  I assume this is the Daniel Jr. listed in the will.

Just a quick follow up to the Cyril date of death (1854). We spent some time in the early to mid 1980s searching for lost and/or abandoned cemeteries in the Greenfield Township PA area looking for evidence of Carpenters and associated families. During one of these forays we discovered a small Carpenter family cemetery that was lost to overgrowth and in danger of sinking into swamp land that had been created by damming a bordering pond. We photographed and documented as many of the headstones as we could. One of the headstones belonged to Cyril (my Great x 4 Grandfather); others belonged to his wife and other family members. I have visited the cemetery occasionally over the years including as recently as last summer (I think I still have the bramble bush scars). The names and dates are still readable on the headstones. The inscription on the headstone reads “In memory of CYRIL CARPENTER, WHO DIED Oct. 19, 1854. AE. 88y'rs 1 mo. & 5 days. Now we feel that each is blessed inheriting their eternal rest.” I think the 1854 date of death for this Cyril is accurate.

Carpenter, Cyril: 1 male 20-30; 1 male 60-70; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 60-70.
Carpenter, Cyril Jr: 1 male 20-30; 2 females under 5; 1 female 20-30.
Carpenter, Joseph: 1 male 5-10; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 2 females 5-10; 2 females 30-40.
Carpenter, Tilghman: 1 male under 5; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 30-40; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 30-40.

Given that Mary is buried in Greenfield and that she died in 1834, it seems fairly safe to assume that Cyril and his family had moved to Greenfield prior to 1834.  He apparently bought land in 1808.  Was this when he purchased the Greenfield lot?

The Sickler's Pond Cemetery can be difficult to find. The easiest way to get there is as follows: 1) exit at the Tompkinsville Exit on Route 81, 2) when you exit the Tompkinsville Exit (exit 202 onto Route 107) you immediately go West, 3) Very shortly (maybe a half mile or less) you will turn right so that you are heading North going parallel to Route 81, 4) after going north about 1.5 miles you will hit an intersection. At this intersection will be the Worth Baptist Church, 5) at this intersection you go east, which will take you over Route 81, 6) shortly after you cross over Route 81 (maybe a quarter mile at most), you will see an old cemetery on the left of the road, 7) Shortly past this cemetery the road will take a dogleg type turn to the left.  In the middle of this turn you will be able to turn right onto two compacted dirt and gravel roads.  This doglegged paved road which intersects with two dirt roads sometimes appears as a normal four-way intersection on some maps.  You will also note that just prior to this "intersection", on the right side of the road is another Carpenter cemetery.  8) At this intersection, you will turn right, and then will immediately be faced with the two dirt roads, 9) you take the dirt road on the left. 10) after about a half mile you will go across a very small bridge.  If you stop on this bridge you will see Sickler's pond on your left, and a smaller pond on your right, which is the downstream side. 11) As soon as you cross the bridge, the Carpenter cemetery will be on your right, along the side of the pond, about 200 feet from the bridge.  The easiest way to get to the cemetery is to continue going until you reach the first developed property.  On this property there is a house trailer.  If you tresspass along the side of this property , you will be able to see a field stone wall in the right rear of the property.  If you go over the fieldstone wall and head toward the pond, you will almost certainly hit the cemetery.  If you choose to not trespass, be prepared for an almost impassable and hellacious trip either through very thick overgrowth, or along an extremely marshy swamp.

Dan/6 Carpenter, born on 14 Jun 1768 at Attleboro, MA [ABC] died on
Saturday, 4 Oct 1806 at Camden, Kershaw Co. SC [K&K, SCH&GM].  He was a
descendant of the Rehoboth branch of the English Carpenters as follows:
Dan/6< Cyril/5< Josiah/4< Obadiah/3< William/2< William/1 Carpenter).
He was a merchant and a pioneer Methodist.  He married in 1789 to Lydia
Thornton, migrated to Camden, Kershaw Co. SC before 1793 [K&K, BHC1].
Dan/6 Carpenter was a brother of Timothy/6 Carpenter of Tennessee.
Seven children [SCH&GM]:

SC (South Carolina) was involved in trade with New England and several New England Carpenters established merchant or mariner outposts in the southern port cities.
The Oliver mentioned in the SC archives was a mariner, possibly ABC #208.
The Richard was a merchant from Rhode Island who traveled throughout the southeast -- you can read more about him in my article "Richard Carpenter, Pioneer Merchant of British West Florida and the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida," in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 72, No. 1 (March 1984), pp. 51-62.  He is ABC #621.
**** The Dan Carpenter in Camden SC is ABC #1525, pp. 216, 370.  (His brother Timothy #1527 was an itinerant Methodist preacher who settled in Tennessee.)  ****
Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter, widow of Phanuel Carpenter ABC #2028, also lived in Camden SC.  The Abiah Carpenter may be ABC #719, who is unaccounted for in ABC.  Margaret and husband George Carpenter lived near Abiah and were probably related, but again, not enough evidence to prove anything.  The later Carpenters in the piedmont counties were from PA, VA, and NC lines.  Lots of interesting possibilities in the South!

I can help with Archibald Smith.
Three male Carpenters (Lydia's brothers) are not listed with families.  One died young.

If the John Carpenter b. 1823 (age 27 in the 1850 Census) was living with his grandfather Archibald Smith - this means one of his daughters married, probably, Samuel or James Carpenter.

Tree 4th of 12 children.  Timothy Jr, Consider, Lucy, Deborah, John, Dan,
Cyril and Nancy. The first four born in MA. Some records show them in Rowe,
Franklin, MA but family tradition says they lived near Salem, MA. "Our Family
Tree", p.9-10.
"...Timothy Carpenter, a burly, aggressive pioneer, of Scotch descent...He was
a Yankee, raised to young manhood in the State of Connecticut, but drifting up
to Boston Mass. he married Hannah Brown, of that city. (He) was an Itinerant,
or travelling Methodist Preacher.  They lived in Salem for quite a few years,
as my grandfather, Consider Carpenter, the second son, was six years of age
when visiting great grandmothers family in Boston, a farewell visit on the way
to TN became lost seeing the sights of the city, holding up the expedition for
a couple of days.  They travelled overland all the way, by Ox team, reaching
the southern part of Kentucky, they stopped for a short time, coming a little
later to TN where there was a small settlement at the Three Forks of Wolf
River.  The first settler of the valley was a hunter and pioneer of VA by the
name of Coonrod Pyle,  (Ancestor of #1084, mother of SGT. Alvin York) who
discovered it on a hunting and pioneering expedition in company with Daniel
Boone.  Tim bought a farm on a small stream, called Cove Creek, a tributary of
the Wolf River, and near the original Settlement which he farmed with the help
of his five sons until they reached manhood or were of age.  Grandfather
himself was preaching, travelling a circuit extending over the southern part
of Kentucky, and the counties of Fentress, Morgan and portions of Scott,
Cumberland and Overton Counties making the rounds of his circuit once a month,
preaching in the homes of the sparsely settled inhabitants, in groves of trees
or in brush covered Arbors.  Settlers travelled for miles to attend
preaching services.  Tim (eventually) sold the Wolf River Farm to his second
son Consider and took up a 1000 acre grant of Government land....built a house
...on White Oak Creek (with) a flowing stream of delightfully cold water,
where they kept their Dairy Products, and cooled their watermelons in the
Summertime..nearby he constructed a Lumber and Gris(t) Mill for grinding corn,
building a dam across the stream for power. The Dam was made of split pine
logs, held to the Frameing by means of wooden pins, there was not a nail in
the building the same being true of his dwelling, which consisted of two pens
or houses, with a ten foot porch between (Dog Trot House). That place was
known as the Carpenter Mills, and was probably the only mill within a 20-mile
radius.  The farmer would place a bushel and a half bag of corn across the
back of a horse, straddle it himself, and spend a full day going to the mill
and back.  But time meant very little to those people, the principal thing was
to get some bread in the house, a couple of weeks supply generally being in
that bag."

BURIAL: C.M. Ward in Mayflower Quarterly, Feb.1995 says, "Timothy
Carpenter's tombstone inscription reads, 'Father gone home'.  Hannah
Carpenter's tombstone inscription reads 'Mother at rest'.  Timothy and Hannah
Carpenter are buried next to their sons, Cyril and Dan Carpenter, and
their wives."

NOTES: Timothy Carpenter was born on 1 Mar 1773 in Connecticut. He died on 7
Feb 1853. He was buried in Tranquility United Methodist
Church Cemetery, County Road 220, McMinn County, TN. He was a Methodist
minister. Timothy Carpenter was a Yankee born in Connecticut.
Rumor has it that some of his people left money in Ireland. As a young man,
Timothy moved to Massachusetts and Married Hannah Brown. Early
in life he became a Methodist minister, and his brother Samuel Carpenter was a
missionary Baptist preacher. Reverend Timothy Carpenter and
his wife came from Massachusetts to Kentucky. After traveling for a few years
in Kentucky, he came to Tennessee and purchased a good farm
on Wolf River.
Our forefathers came to McMinn County in 1853. They settled in three areas -
the Charlie Russell Place, the place where James Hyde lived, and
what was known as the "Sliger Place", which later belonged to Chris
Wattenbarger and was owned by John Carpenter until he died in 1966. The
Carpenters were of English descent. Parents: Cyril Carpenter and Lucy Lane.
He was married to Hannah Brown on 25 Aug 1795 in Boston, MA. Children were:
Timothy Carpenter , Consider Carpenter, Lucy Carpenter ,
Deborah Carpenter, Dan Carpenter , Nancy Carpenter, John Carpenter , Cyril

Hannah Brown is listed as the daughter of Noah Brown who is descended from John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley from the Mayflower. Also she descends from John and Joan Tilley of the MayFlower. Hannah’s brother, Elisha Brown married Timothy Carpenter’s sister Hannah Carpenter (born 1790, lived in Rowe MA and later in Michigan) Hannah Carpenter Brown and Timothy Carpenter are listed as children of Cyril Carpenter born Sept. 7, 1743 who is also found listed as (Deacon Cyril Carpenter a Revolutionary War Veteran ). He made the rounds of his circuit once per month, preaching in the homes of the sparsely settled farmers, and in the summertime in groves of trees, or in brush covered arbors. The settlers traveled for miles to attend preaching services. Great Grandfather’s family consisted of eight member—five boys and three girls. Boys were named Timothy Jr., Consider (my Grandfather), John, Dan, and Cyril. The girls were named Deborah, Lucy and Nancy. Timothy Carpenter Jr. Went to Texas at an early date in the history of that state. Of him I know nothing. · My Grandfather Sid Carpenter married Susan Guthrie. · John Carpenter married Rhoda Gurthie, sister by the name of Cissel. They moved to Sweet-Water Tennessee, in McMinn county, near Athens, Tennessee. They were both Methodist Preachers and were instrumental in establishing a Methodist Theological School at Athens, Tennessee. Many descendants of Dan and Cyril Carpenter live in the surrounding country at the present time. · Great Aunt Nancy Carpenter married William Powell, going to Illinois, where he became quite wealthy in farming and stock raising. · Great Aunt Lucy Carpenter married Middleton Halloway and moved to Kentucky I visited Middleton Halloway at Whitley City, Kentucky, in 1895. He was Postmaster at that place. He had no family by my great aunt Lucy, and at her death had married again. · Great Aunt Deborah (Debby) Carpenter married Corneilius Mitchel Frogge. He was known by either name—“Mitch” or “Neil” Frogge. He owned a farm, in the Wolf River Valley Settlement, which is still in the possession of his grandchildren. He moved out to Morgan County with his Father-in-law, great Grandfather Carpenter, settling a farm on White Oak Creek, a short distance from his Father-in-law’s place, (The farm now owned by Wash Mathews). He lived there about six years, then moved back to his Wolf River farms, growing a large pond of Frogges, as we will take up a little later. Returning now to Great Grandfather Rev. Timothy Carpenter. He sold his Wolf River farm to his son Consider (my Grandfather), and took up a Government Grant of land of 1,000 acres, lying on White Oak Creek, now known as the Schenck Place, and within a short distance of his son-in-law Frogges farm, as we have just stated, whose farm was a part of my Great Grandfathers 1,000 acre tract. Great Grandfather built a house under or just at the edge of a cliff on White Oak Creek. Under this cliff, and further back from the dwelling, there was a flowing spring of delightfully cold water, where they kept their dairy products and cooled their watermelons in the summer time. Directly across the road that ran in front of the house, and not more than a hundred feet from his dwelling, he constructed a Lumber and Grist Mill for grinding corn. He built a dam across the stream for power. The dam was built of split pine logs, fastened to the framing by means of wooden pins. There was not an iron nail in the building. The same being true of his dwelling house, which consisted of two log pens or houses, with a ten foot porch between. I cannot remember any windows, though there may have been. Great Grandfather (Rev. Timothy Carpenter) lived there until he was quite feeble, when he moved back to my Grandfather Sid Carpenter’s house in Popular Cove. He died soon after thus ending the life of a true Pioneer, as well as a Missionary to the scattered settlers of southern Kentucky, and eastern Tennessee, where he was widely known and highly respected. Grandfather Sid Carpenter then moved to the place on White Oak Creek and lived there until he died. That place was known as the “Carpenter Mills”, and was probably the only mill within a radius of twenty five miles around. A farmer would place a two bushel bag of corn across the back of a horse, straddle it himself, and spend a full day going to the mill and back. But time meant very little to the people of those days. The principle thing was the get some bread in the house. A couple of weeks supply being in that bag. I wish I might be able to describe a Water Power Saw Mill like that my Grandfather installed with his grist mill, there on White Oak Creek. It was what was known as a “sash Saw”, something like a Cross-cut saw, standing on it’s end, held in a frame, the lower end of which was attached to a strong wooden wheel, which in turn was operated by means of a wooden gear causing it to rotate in a circular direction, and each time this wheel made a revolution the saw above was brought down, making a stroke through the log which was held in place, on a moveable carriage, operated by a cable attached to a round log pulley, so arranged that each revolution of the wheel to which the saw was affixed, would push it along, just so far, about a quarter inch distance, cutting a line through the log, which meant one board about every ten to fifteen minutes. A slow way, you will say, to get lumber, but it was better than to saw the boards by hand power, by one man standing in a pit in the ground, another above, literally sawing off a slice of a log that was fastened between them, with a cross-cut saw, as you would cut a stick of wood into today. Well, it indeed was a slow process of getting lumber, and in consequence there was very little of it used. Many floors were made of hewed slabs of pine, the farmer using what was called a broadaxe, with which an experienced “Axe” man could hew a surface pretty nearly smooth as if it was planned. And now to get back to our story, and take up my Great Uncle Neil Frogge’s history, who we have stated, was married to Great Aunt Debbie Carpenter, sister to my Grandfather Sid Carpenter. Their family was prolific, plentiful and numerous, consisting of fifteen children—six boys and nine girls, however six of them died in infancy, only two boys and seven girls reached maturity. The boys were named Timothy and John W. Frogge. The girls were Hannah Browne, Elizabeth Turley, Lucy Lane, Cynthia Anne, Deborah Jane, Rebecky Bosley, and Mary Baskett Frogge, respectively. They married as follows: Hannah Browne Frogge married Harrison Williams Elizabeth Turley Frogge married Simon Shelley Lucy Lane Frogge married James Crouch Cynthia Anne married Reverend A.B. Wright Deborah Jane married Louis Shelley Rebecka Bosley married Timothy Peters (Brother to Tobias, Clark, and Henry Peters) with who our family are so well acquainted Mary Baskett married J.R. McGinnis The boys married as follows—John W. married Nancy Wright, sister of his brother-in-law, Reverend A.B. Wright and Timothy Carpenter Frogge married Harriet Wilson. I have mentioned all of these names in full to show you how all of them were named for relatives of our antecedents, “Hannah Browne” name of wife of great grandfather Tim, and Lucy Lane going back to an aunt living in England (my correction Lucy Lane is Timothy Carpenter’s mother) before the family came to America. Also the names of these Aunts and Uncles were given to generations coming after them. John W. Frogge of Wolf River, being my Mother’s cousin, would make his son Steve, Dan, and Cyril Frogge, living in Jamestown, Tennessee, second cousins to myself. Tim Peters and Louis Shelley marrying Neil Frogges daughters would also be my mother’s first cousin. They were both Methodist Preachers. Louis Shelley was pastor of a church in Louisville, Kentucky when I lived in that city in 1905, and by way of finishing up our relationship with the Frogges will say that A.B. Wright, marrying Cynthia A. Frogge, my mother’s first cousin, would make his children Mary J, James, Will D., and Asbury Wright second cousins to myself. But now to get back to the Carpenter Family. Great Uncle Tim, John, Dan, Cyril we have already disposed of, as well as the families of my great aunts Debby, Lucy, and Nancy, leaving my Grandfather Sid Carpenter yet to be taken care of. My Grandfather Consider Carpenter’s family consisted of three boys and five girls and their history is as follows: Itmothy, Mother’s oldest brother, enlisted in the army of the war between the States and Mexico. Wounded in action he was returned by boat to Memphis, Tennessee, where he died. Mary A., oldest daughter, married my Father, Hannah B., second daughter, married L.P. Galloway, my father’s brother Rhoda, third daughter, married Amos York, Nancy married Leander Peters, who enlisted in the Union Army of the Civil War, and was killed in the Battle of Stone Rive at Murphreysboro, Tennessee. George Y., second son, enlisted in the Union Army, along with his brother-in-law, Peters, was killed by Guerillas (home guards so called) while visiting his home on furlough John, the youngest son, married Nancy Wright, sister of his brother George Carpenter’s wife, Eliza Wright Jane, youngest sister of my mother’s, married Jasper Campbell, who enlisted in the Rebel Army and fought through several engagements without getting wounded. John Carpenter later also enlisted in the Rebel Army thereby dividing the family equally in the war of the Rebellion, one brother and one brother-in-law fighting with the forces of the north, and one with the Southern Forces. Uncle John Carpenter’s wife, Nancy, died at the birth of their daughter, who was also named Nancy, and who was raised by her Aunt Freely Wright, and her bachelor uncle, James Wright. John Carpenter, with his brother-in-law Campbell, after the Civil War settled in Russellville, Kentucky. My uncle John married again, bought a farm and raised a family. Some of the members living there until the present time. Aunt Nancy Carpenter, fourth daughter of my Grandfather, married Leander Peters, who as we have already stated was killed in the battle of Stone River. They had one son named Wesley Peters, who on growing up, married Sophronia York. They were both first cousins to myself, but not related to each other, being on opposite sides of our family tree. Aunt Nancy, after the death of her husband Peters, married A.R. Lewallen. To whom were born six boys and three girls, their names were John, Horace, Orlando, Kingsley, Hollie, and Herman. The girls were named Linnie, Anna, and Lurie. I do not know who the boys married, as they married mostly outside of the community. Linnie married Worcester Peters, Annie married John B. York, another first cousin but unrelated to each other, and Lurie married Will Davis. All these fellows were boys of the neighborhood. There are numerous cousins, grandchildren of my Aunt Nancy, but I will not try to carry the relationship further than first cousins, as I would be unable to name very many of them. My mother’s youngest sister Jane Carpenter, as we stated earlier, married and lived in Russellville, Kentucky. Had four children, three boys and one girl, the names were Alonza, Marion, Sam and Cordelia, but I know very little of their families. Family names of Hannah and Timothy are common in my family. My Aunt Hannah Galloway had the full name of her Grandmother “Hannah Browne” of Boston, wife of the pioneer Grandfather “Tim”, born around the year 1775. Also every generation following had a Timothy—great Grandfather being Timothy the first His eldest son, brother of my grandfather Sid Carpenter, was Timothy the second. My mother’s oldest brother, who died in the Mexican War with the United States, was Timothy the third, and my oldest brother would make Timothy the 4th, and my nephews Timothy Young and Timothy Hall would be Timothy the fifth, from my great grandfather Timothy Carpenter of Salem, Massachusetts.

called a "circuit rider" and covered parts of Tennessee and Virginia using a
sheepskin for a saddle. According to 1850 Census of McMinn
County, TN birthplace was South Carolina. Parents: Timothy Carpenter and Hannah

(per the CM) indicates that Samuel died in 1861 and not in 1844 as recorded
