Lucy Sells Carpenter
Birth: Jul. 29, 1909
Johnson City
Washington County
Tennessee, USA
Death: Jul. 2, 2008, USA
Mrs. Carpenter, born July 29, 1909, in Johnson City, Tenn., went to be with her Lord Wednesday, July 2, 2008. She was a daughter of Congressman Sam R. Sells of Tennessee and Frances Rice Hayward, who preceded her in death.
She married Dr. J. Walter Carpenter, Jr. of Uniontown, Penn., in 1935. From this marriage they had four children, J. Walter Carpenter, III of Houston, Texas, Frances Welch of Little Mountain, Lucy Butler of Chapin and Charlotte Evans of Chapin.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Sam H. Sells of Johnson City, Tenn.; sister, Charlotte Coe of Alexandria, Va.; and brother, Rev. Frank Sells of Columbia.
Mrs. Carpenter is survived by her four children, thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Carpenter attended Columbia Bible College, now Columbia International University, but left shortly before graduation to care for her mother who was very ill at the time. After marriage and raising four children, she went back to school to obtain her degree from the University of Maryland. She taught in the Maryland district schools, grades 1 - 12, until her husband took a position at the newly formed Baptist College of Charleston. This time she taught Bible in the high schools there. She did this without pay, choosing to return the money to the college for the advancement of Christian work.
Mrs. Carpenter accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and began teaching Sunday School at the age of 16 and continued teaching well into her 90's. Known affectionately to her grandchildren as Memaw, and as Miss Lucy to others, she was a joy to all who knew and loved her. She loved to rise early in the morning for her quiet time with the Lord and Bible study before her family awoke.
Always loyal to CIU, Mrs. Carpenter contributed to the scholarship program for Christian students, setting up the Sells/Carpenter Scholarship Fund to help advance the cause of Christ through the many students she helped.
Her favorite Bible verse was, "My times are in thy hand..." Psalm 31:15. Her love of the Lord was evident from the way she lived her life and treated others. Even at the close of her life she continued to be a witness for Him and would ask aloud what the Lord had for her to do today.

Florida, USA
Death: Mar. 2, 2015
Irmo

South Carolina, USA
LITTLE MOUNTAIN - Memorial Service for Frankie Carpenter Welch will be at Chapin Presbyterian Church Saturday, March 14, at 1:00 p.m. with private interment in Sylva, North Carolina, at a later date. Visitation will follow the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
Frankie, born September 17, in Tampa, Florida, went to be with her Lord Monday, March 2, 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. J. Walter Carpenter and Lucy McGuire Sells of Columbia, SC. She had three children: John C. Lucas of Georgia, Sherwood M. Lucas of Selma, NC, and Charlotte R. Lucas of Dunn, NC. In 1989, Frankie married her best friend and the love of her life Edward Welch of Sylva, NC, and they moved to Little Mountain, SC.
Frankie is survived by her husband Ed; three children; three grandchildren Miranda Jenkins, Chance Jenkins, and Rosie Lucas of Dunn, NC; her brother Walter Carpenter of Houston, TX; and her two sisters Lucy Butler of Dolores, CO and Charlotte Evans of Chapin, SC.
Frankie graduated from Houghton Academy in New York and Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC. She was active in Scouting, volunteering at the ministry "Sharing God's Love" in Irmo, starting a thriving business "Sparkling Images" in Lexington, SC, and making jewelry for cancer survivors. Frankie accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and worked with her mother in teaching Sunbeams and Child Evangelism. Known affectionately to her grandchildren as Nana, she was a creative, giving person, a joy to all who knew her, and a prayer warrior for anyone who came to her. Frankie was known for her sense of doing everything to the best of her ability and then in passing on her creations to many people.
Frankie's favorite Bible verse was, Psalm 34:6, which she changed as noted: "This poor [woman] called, and the LORD heard [her]; He saved [her] out of all [her] troubles." Even toward the end of her earthly life, she knew this truth and would say, "I have nothing to complain about - only much to be grateful for."
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Chapin Presbyterian Church. Please send condolences to eandfwelch@msn.com. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfuneralhomedutchfork.com
