Civil War wounded treated in Rochester Hospitals
Transcribed by: Gary Welch
The following story about Civil War wounded who were treated in Rochester hospitals is from the Rochester Republican dated June 16, 1864. (Most of these men were probably from NY Regiments)
LOCAL MATTERS
WEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 8, 1864
The Wounded Men at the Hospitals
The sick and wounded soldiers who arrived here yesterday P.M. were all safely transferred to the Hospitals in the street cars and hacks. - The hackmen who were not engaged volunteered to convey the wounded, and the cartmen generally came forward to convey baggage free.
Of the 375 [note: there are a few less than 375 names in the list] who came in the train, about 60 went to City Hospital [now called Rochester General] and the balance to St. Mary's. The latter hospital will have in a few days still more room for the reception of patients and they will arrive as fast as there is room for them.

GRAVE:  images
Hannah Glover Carpenter
Birth: Dec 1808 Poland, Androscoggin County, Maine, USA
Death: 16 Nov 1903 (aged 94) Ryegate, Caledonia County, Vermont, USA
Burial: Groton Village Cemetery, Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont, USA
Plot: section 1, row 24
Memorial #: 109131729
Bio:
Hannah Glover was born December 1807 in Poland, Maine and died 16 Nov 1903 in Ryegate. She was the daughter of Samuel Glover and Rebecca Lane.

Hannah married Eliphalet Carpenter on 25 Oct 1827 in Fairlee, Vermont, as his second wife.

Hannah was the sister of prominent Groton resident Otis Glover, and great-aunt of Waldo F. Glover the author of the book Mr. Glover's Groton.

From the Argus and Patriot [Montpelier] November 25, 1903:

"Mrs. Hannah Carpenter, one of the oldest women in town, died at the home of Lafayette Carpenter, her son Monday of last week. She was 97 years old and has been in feeble health for the past six months but has not been confined to the bed but a few days. She was born in Groton and has lived in that town the greater part of her life. The near relatives living are, four sons, Lafayette of South Ryegate, John, George and Taylor, of Groton and two daughters, Mrs. Harry Thayer, of Boston, and Mrs. Victoria Heath of Lisbon, N.H. The funeral was held from the Methodist house in Groton last Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. A. J. Hough, pastor of that society, assisted by Rev. J. H. McArthur of South Ryegate."

Corrections to the above article: Hannah Glover was born in Maine; she and her husband Eliphalet Carpenter came to Groton in 1839; the reference to son "John" should have been "Jack" [Andrew Jackson Carpenter]; her daughter in Boston was Mrs. Frank Thayer.

MYSTERY: How can a person be buried in two places?
We have the following death record with death 4 Feb 1869 in Saint Albans. We even have a grave and a spouse buried next to his stone in Saint albans Greenwood Cemetery.
Then we have another FaG (GRAVE2:) entry having the same birth but showing death as 4 Mar 1868 on a combined stone with the son Augustus in Pecatonica Cemetery in Illinois.
My guess is the second one is a memorial stone.

NAME:  Lois Bullock but Huldah also seen.
She appeared on the census in 1830 in Strongsville (Cuyahoga) OH. [23]  1830
census lists 1 male 10-15 [William=14], 1 male 20-30 [Robert=24 or Rufus =21],
1 female 20-30 [Hulda=26 or Lois=29] and 1 female 50-60 [Lois = 58].  She died
on 12 Mar 1862 in Strongsville (Cuyahoga) OH. [24]  She was buried in
Strongsville OH Cemetery.  "Dear Mother"; Grave A 6 1.

1772 - Lois Bullock was born 5 Aug 1772 and her supposed parents were not married until 1776.  Was her father married a first time?  Was she a child of Esther Perry before her marriage to Benjamin Bullock.

1772 - Children of Benjamin Bullock and Esther: "Lois 5 Aug 1772; Esther 15 Jan 1777".  There are also 10 more children of Benjamin Bullock by a second marriage.  (Taken from "Vital Record of Rehoboth, 1642-1896, Marriages, Intentions, Births, Deaths", by James N Arnold, pg 566.)

1790 census lists a Benjamin Bullock in Rehoboth, Bristol Co, MA.  Is this the family of Lois?

1790 - Lois Bullock and Josiah Carpenter married 25 Nov 1790, Brattleboro, Windham Co VT.  (John R Carpenter lists this marriage in Rehoboth, Bristol Co, MA, same date.)

1800-1820, See records under Josiah Carpenter.

1823 - First husband, Josiah Carpenter, died 5 Nov 1823, Strongsville, Cuyahoga Co, OH.  Josiah Carpenter died and is buried in Strongsville Cem, Cuyahoga Co OH, "Josiah Carpenter, age 55y 9m 18d, died 11/5/1823".  He is buried in Sec A, Lot 6, Grave 1.  Wife Lois and son Levi are also buried in this lot and grave number.  They are on 3 different sides of the same stone.  We visited this cemetery in June 2008, and have pictures.  The stone is very hard to read and the pictures show the name only, rest is a blur.  JZ.

1830 Cuyahoga Co OH, Strongsville, Loisa CARPENTER, males 1 10-15, 1 20-30; females 1 20-30, 1 50-60.  (This would be the widow, Lois, 50-60; possibly Rufus 20-30; possibly Levi 10-15.  Who is the female 20-30?  Was Rufus already married?  (Where are children Lois and Bethia?  They should have been at home also.  Lois is next door to Zachra Carpenter and William Carpenter, her sons.)

1840 - where?

1849 - (Second marriage) - Ahijah Haynes and Haldah Carpenter married 12 April 1849, Cuyahoga Co OH.  Recorded in Vol 4, pg 541.  Married by Henry Moore, Minister(?).  The name is written as Ahijah but indexed as Abijah.  (Note the wife is listed as Haldah Carpenter on the marriage record and Lois Carpenter in the newspaper article below.)

1849 - (Second marriage for both) "Cleveland Newspaper Index to Marriages and Deaths, 1818-1876" Vol 32, pg 991: "Mrs Lois Carpenter married Ahijah Hanns (Haynes) April 1849".  (Lois was the widow of Josiah Carpenter.)

1850 Cuyahoga Co OH, Strongsville Twp, 16 Sep 1850, Ahijah Haynes, 83, male, no occupation, MA; Lois, 77, female, MA.  (Next door is Ahijah Haynes & family and Abail & family.)

1860 - (Where?) - I have not found Lois (Bullock) Carpenter Haynes on the 1860 census by either Carpenter or Haynes name in Ohio.  She is probably with one of her sons and not indexed.

1862 - Strongsville Cem, Cuyahoga Co OH, Lois Carpenter, died 3/12/1862, wife of Josiah, "Dear Mother".  Sec A, Lot 6, Grave 1.  Lois' first husband Josiah and son Levi are also buried in this lot and grave number.   They are on 3 different sides of the same stone.  We visited this cemetery in June 2008, and have pictures.  The stone is very hard to read and the pictures show the name only, the rest of the writing is a blur on the picture.  JZ.
