Alice Pauline Thorston

After graduating from elementary and secondary school Alice taught school in
Sundown, MN and since her older sisters had already left home, it became her
duty to take care of her grandfather who was mean to her.  Once when teaching
at school a prairie storm became a blizzard and while riding her horse back to
her parent's farm home became disoriented and was lost.  But a timely rescue saved her legs from being amputated due to severe frost-bite.

36974. Yale Thompson Carpenter

Yale Thompson Carpenter was a very successful farmer and cattle trader in
N Bloomfield, Ohio.  When he was very young and living on the "Rice farm" in
Orwell, Ohio he burned the barn down while playing with matches.  He became very frightened of the punishment he might receive and hid awayunder the bridge
by the road.  His parents feared he was lost in the fire.

Later in life he owned a cattle auction and several farms in  N Bloomfield and Mespotamia, Ohio, he also purchased a farm in Davenport, Iowa which he later sold.  He raised beef cattle and had a huge dairy...in the early days shipped 60 cans or more of milk each day. Known to drive his Buick in the hayfields and his
Cadillac on the highways,  he often would physically run himself intoa nervous and physical breakdown which required long periods of rest and treatment.

During his life he was very well known and respected throughout the area, and
would often render assistance to many farmers less fortunate than himself.
At his death, many came from all around to offer their regards.  He was a shrewd, energetic, legenday figure, direct in his speech and of considerable stature and repute.

Yale also had a great interest in the family history, and during the Christmas holidays when the Carpenter's got together for dinner, he would tell us about many of our deceased relatives and ancestry.  Many of these recollections are again re-told to the best of my memory in the notes and appendages of these ancestors.
