44361. Walter Vernon "Walt" Carpenter Jr.
BIO:
Walt went into the Air Force right after graduation from high school in Providence, R.I. He served in Vietnam, doing something top-secret, for which he was detached to the Army Rangers. He told me he qualified for three Purple Hearts but never did the paperwork to get them, I think because he was very modest. He retired from Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque after 20 years. Then he became a bookstore manager, which along with bicycling, was his great love. He first managed a B. Dalton (now Barnes & Noble) and then a local used and antiquarian bookstore, Page 1 Too. He died here in Albuquerque about two weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was a kind, gentle, loving man and a gentleman of the old school. It was my good fortune to meet him over a bicycle about 25 years ago.
I graduated Ralls High School in 1960 and the RHC 1960 balances out Walt ten speed.
