SOME CONFLICTS with the above ...

MILITARY:
We have no evidence that this Reuben Carpenter served in the American Revolutionary War or provided material support.  The first hint (which may be wrong) is cited in BURIAL below.
The second is a 1812 LAND record that clarifies why he got the Military Land Grant. See below.
The military Land Grant was not for his service but due to the service of another whose heir gave his rights to it to him.
FYI - His father served in the Revolutionary War and is so documented.
AND as a Justice of the Peace he helps others make claim for service in the Revolutionary War.

HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY.
CHAPTER X I V.
BLENDON TOWNSHIP.
https://www.genealogybug.net/franklin_1858/blendon.htm
THIS township was stricken off from Sharon, and established the 6th of March, 1815, by the name of Harrison, (the original Harrison Township, described in Chapter II, having been chiefly stricken from Franklin County in the formation of Pickaway County, in 1810, and the remaining part of it being included in the townships of Hamilton and Madison.). In 1825, the county Commissioners changed the name from Harrison to Blendon. The township consists of just one original surveyed township, of five miles square; being township number two, in range seventeen, United States Military Lands. The settlement of this township was not commenced quite as soon as some of the surrounding ones. The first settlers here, were Messrs. Edward Phelps and Ezra Griswold. They arrived here from Windsor, Connecticut, in 1806; the former is cut the first tree ever felled by a white man in the township. Mr.
page 235
Phelps died in 1840, aged eighty-one years. Mr. Griswold has resided in the township ever since 1806, and still (1858) is in the enjoyment of a sound constitution and good health. In 1808, Messrs. George Osborn and Ethan Palmer, from Windsor, and Francis Olmsted and his family of sons, (of whom Gen. Philo H. is one), arrived from Simsbury, Connecticut; and about the same time Cruger Wright settled here, and John Mattoon and **** Reuben Carpenter, from Vermont, **** Henry Hone, from Pennsylvania, Isaac Harrison, John and William Cooper, from Virginia. Subsequently, apt. John Bishop, Timothy Lee, Esq., Gideon Hart, Esq., the Westervelts, and others.
There are, in this township, two villages; Westerville, laid out by Matthew Westervelt, in July, 1839; and Amalthea, of Central College, laid out by the College Board of Trustees, on the lands of T. Lee, Esq., in 1849.

The population of this township, agreeably to the census of 1840, wa 972. In 1850, it was 1, 303. In 1853, the township contained thirteen school districts, and an aggregate of 548 youth between the ages of five and twenty-one years. In 1857, the agregate of such youth was 547.

COMMENT:
Morrow County was created in 1848 from the counties of Knot, Marion, Delaware and Richland.
THIS MEANS in 1812 Morrow County did not exist.
Using the town of Mount Gilead as the center of present day Morrow County, we find that that location was in Marion County in 1817.  At least per Wikipedia - See:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Gilead,_Ohio#History
BUT ... Marion County was not created until 1820 and it was created from Delaware County. Delaware County was created from Franklin County in 1808. And Franklin was created in 1803 from Ross County.
So in 1812 the land grant cited above cited above was likely in Delaware County.

NOTE:
Pioneer Cemetery is located at Westerville's coporate limits on S. State Street. The original section was known as Jameson Cemetery, named for Robert Jameson, who donated the land. Over the years it was renamed to West Church Pioneer and later changed to Pioneer Cemetery. The cemetery was maintained for many years by the Blendon Township Trustees. In the 1970s, as Westerville's corporate limit was extended to include this land, the City took over ownership of Pioneer.
It was established in 1817, with the first burial being Eliza Palmer, infant daughter of Ethan Palmer. Within the Jameson section of Pioneer can be found many of Blendon Townships earliest pioneers. Among them are Robert and Margaret McCutcheon Jameson, Isaac and Ursala Clark Griswold, and brothers Benjamin and Simeon Moore, with their families. There are also numerous Jameson, Schrock and Osborn family members buried here.

Death: 15 Sep 1830 (aged 67–68) Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Burial: Pioneer Cemetery, Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Memorial #: 33032186
Bio:
Reuben is one of 14 children born to Wlliam Carpenter (1721-1809) and Hannah Needham (1727-1781). Several early family histories state he married Anna Rood in Vermont, about 1787. But I am unable to find any marriage record for Anna Rood to Reuben Carpenter in VT or MA or CT.

Reuben's sister Anna Carpenter, married Moses Rood. This may have caused some confusion over the name Anna in those early histories.

There was a marriage between Reuben Carpenter and Anna Stacy, on 09 Feb 1788 recorded in Wilbraham, MA. Found several sources of this marriage under Mass Town and Vtal Rec. Also on familysearch for Mass Marriages, 1695-1910. batch M54142-1, Mass-ODM, film #0904738, 0904739, 14765 - Anna Stacy married Reuben Carpenter on 09 Feb 1788 in Wilbraham, Hampden, Mass. The marriage was recorded in CT also, and references to Somers, CT on 16 April 1788. A record of the marriage is common for both places of residence.

Reuben and Anna settled in Barre, VT shortly after the marriage, and reside near Anna Stacy's brothers, Mahlan and Warham Stacy. So I am certain we have the correct Anna and Reuben.

Rebuen Carpenter served in the Revolutionary War under John Carpenter, along with Jotham Carpenter, who was a brother to our Reuben.

Reuben Carpenter - Private, Capt. John Carpenter's co. of guards stationed at Springfield; enlisted June 24, 1779; discharged Sept 24, 1779; enlistment, 3 months; also, same co; joined June 1, 1780; service to Sept 1, 1780, 3 mos; enlistment, 8 months from time of joining at Springfield; also, same co.; service from Sept 6, 1780, to date of discharge, Feb 6, 1781, 5 mos.

By 1808, Reuben and Anna and their children, left Vermont for Franklin County, Ohio, and settled on the west side of Alum Creek with other Vermont families. Reuben and Anna raised at least 5 children: Lucy Carpenter, Lavinia Carpenter, John Carpenter, Cyrus Stacy Carpenter, and Royal Carpenter.

There is currently (1994) no visible marker for Reuben and his wife Anna in the cemetery. I am looking through older family photos to see if we might have a photo of their tombstones. If anyone has one, please let me know!

Death: 17 Sep 1835 (aged 72–73) Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Burial: Pioneer Cemetery, Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Memorial #: 33032338
Bio:
Anna Stacy married Reuben Carpenter on 09 Feb 1788 and the marriage is recorded in Wilbraham, MA. Some histories name Reuben's wife as Anna or Hannah Rood. It is unknown if Reuben married two different Anna's or if histories had incorrect information. I have not been able to find a marriage between Reuben Carpenter and Anna/Hannah Rood. Reuben Carpenter's sister Anna however, married Moses Rood.

Reuben and Anna (Stacy) Carpenter moved to Barre, VT and resided near her two brothers.

By 1808, Reuben and Anna left Vermont and followed other VT families to Franklin County, Ohio. They settled on the west side of Alum Creek near Westerville, Ohio. Anna may be related to Moses Rood of Barre, VT who married Reuben Carpenter's sister Anna.

John Wilson Carpenter, son of Reuben and Anna, married Huldah Tinkham. Huldah may be related to the Isaac Tinkham who also came to Ohio by 1816.

HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY.
CHAPTER I.
FROM THE FIRST SETTLEMENT UNTIL THE ORGANIZATION OF THE COUNTY, IN 1803.
https://www.genealogybug.net/franklin_1858/001.htm#
About the year 1799 or 1800, Robert Balentine erected a poor kind of mill on the run near Gay street, on the Columbus plat; and, near the same time, Mr. John D. Rush erected an inferior mill on the Scioto, a short distance above Franklinton.  They were, however, both poor concerns, and soon fell to ruins.  A horse-mill was then resorted to, and kept up for some time; but the first mill of any considerable advantage to the county, was erected by Colonel Kilbourne, near Worthington, about the year 1805.

About the same time, Carpenter's mill on Whetstone, in what is now Delaware County, and Dyer's on Darby, were erected.   ...

I found this short biography about Dr. James Hosea Chessman Miller in book :

"History of Colorado" volume 3 - 1918 -
by Wilbur Fiske Stone

***************NOTE*****************
I HAVE NOT VERIFIED ANY OF THIS
possible Military service yet, but put it here in case others can help verify his Military service.

" Dr. James Hosea Chessman Miller was born at Rushville, New York, in 1800 and died at Jackson, Ohio, in 1883 (1880).....

Dr. Miller, surreptitiously left his home in New York in 1819 and walked and worked his way across the country to the Kanawha Salt Works, in what is now West Virginia, and from that -point traveled southward by salt rafts to New Orleans. He fell in with a body of trappers from Texas, then a state of Mexico, and with them came for furs over the Cochetopa pass to the Arkansas river. From that point
they continued ou their northerly way, striking the head of Cherry creek, and proceeded down to its junction with the Platte, camping at its mouth in 1821 and 1822, long before Colorado had become American territory.

Returning to the Gulf, Dr. Miller afterward went to
Bolivia, South America, and fought the Spanish with General Bolivar until the Bolivians secured their independence from Spanish rule about 1824. Later Dr. Miller returned home and married but after a few years
again heard "the call of the wild," his taste for adventure taking him to Texas in 1836. There, with other heroes, actuated by a love of liberty, he fought until the independence of the state was secured.

Then, at the request of the chief of the Mexican army, who had become attached to Dr. Miller, he went to Mexico and for two years was an officer at Zacatecas. He returned home, however, at the time of the Civil war and attempted to enlist with the "Boys in Blue" of the Union
army. He was at that time sixty-one years of age and the board was inclined to reject him on account of his years, but he insisted he was only "forty-four past," the limit being forty-five. They laughingly accepted him as a private but he was soon transferred to the surgeons' department, where he used his medical ability, serving in
that way throughout the war, thus doing his full duty for oppressed humanity in this and other lands. Later, taking up his abode at Jackson, Ohio, he there remained until his demise in 1883. His wife, who was born in Vermont in 1803, passed away in Jackson in 1877."

2717. Isaiah Carpenter

per NY Number 1640 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 238.
Family on page 398 (# 542).  A farmer.  See Notes.
Isaiah Carpenter b. 8 Jan 1735 and Isaack Carpenter b. 8 Jan 1734
are probably intermixed.  Both claim Mehitable Thompson as mother but one Jotham Carpenter and Jonathan Carpenter as father. This may be as simple as a dual year posting because of the calendar change in 1751.  (1734/1735)
AND the death date given 17 Jan 1809 VT was once claimed by Isaiah Carpenter-20608 b. 18 Mar 1734  Hardwick, MA with parents Nathan CARPENTER-4688 (1700–1770) and Abigail Sabin-12978 (1704–1757). Yet his death date claimed was disproved because he never went to Vermont.

Did any early Carpenters of Rehoboth marry Mayflower descendents?  It
occurred to me that this was a distinct possibility.  And sure enough, while
browsing through the index of the John Billington Mayflower Family I found
several familiar Carpenter names from my line.
I thought I had hit pay dirt!  But as I read the fine print, I saw the
Billington book identified an error in Amos B Carpenter1s book, which
apparently throws my family line out of the Rehoboth Family completely.
The discrepancy arose when ABC apparently read incorrectly the data of 1640
Isaiah Carpenter born January 8, 1735, and should have identified him as
Isaack Carpenter born January 8, 1734/5, who died young without issue.
To clarify the problem, I have listed the descendants from both books.
Square brackets [] are mine.

[and this is the fine-print footnote:]
* Contrary to the account in Carpenter (Rehoboth) Gen pp 238, 398-9, there
is no indication that the son 3Isaiah2 (Isaack in birth record) . . . lived
to maturity.  The adults described as these sons of Jotham Carpenter do not
belong to this family. . . And son Isaack, as 3Isaiah2, is mistakenly
identified as an adult Isaiah of Vermont.
Can anyone help me straighten this mess out?
Bill Wilson.

Isaiah Carpenter and James Breckinridge were accused of rioting
by the New Yorkers who claimed that they had taken land under
the New Hampshire grant, within the limits of NY
territory;  and further, that they had taken up arms to fight
for the land as a part of Bennington.  This accusation was not
true;  they were within the limits of Bennington.  It arose from
the fact that they were loyal to the proposed government of
Vermont.  It was about the year 1777.
Isaiah Carpenter was one of the first settlers of Salisbury,
under the New Hampshire grant;  he was a conspicuous character
in the difficulties between the "Green Mountain Boys" and the
"Yorkers."  Mr. Carpenter was a near neighbor of Judge Olin. The
"Yorkers" drove Carpenter from his cabin on a few acres of
clearing, and put one of their grantees in possession.  One day
as the "Yorker" was chopping a tree there was a report, and a
ball whistled by his head;  he supposing that it was some
hunter, kept on chopping;  in a few moments there was another
report, and a second bullet struck the tree a few inches above
his head.  He left for parts unknown, immediately, and Carpenter
had full possession.  A short time after this, Judge Olin shot a
steer which he was killing for family use;  Carpenter, hearing
the report, took his musket and came running down to Judge
Olin's inquiring "Where are the Yorkers".
It is said by members of the family that he joined the
Revolutionary forces and was aid to Gen. Warren.2  SOUR S203

NEW YORK GRANTEES APPEAL 203 ... Hampshire claim of jurisdiction, although it did conflict with the Bennington grant. Under these circumstances, the Breakenridge claim of title was clearly invalid, and if, as James Duane said, the defendant's lawyers told him he had no case, their advice was sound," nevertheless, Breakenridge would make no admissions, and, as the plaintiff was caught unprepared with necessary formal proof of his title, the former won a temporary victory by way of a nonsuit, only to have the case go against him at a later trial. The first case to be tried, therefore, was that brought on behalf of the lessee of Captain John Small, a reduced officer in the 4md Foot, against Isaiah Carpenter of Shaftsbury, who claimed title under Wentworth's patent of that township. Captain Small had obtained a military patent from New York, in October 1765, for three thousand acres under the King's Proclamation of October 1763, and his land was located in Bennington and Shaftsbury." At the trial the plaintiff proved his title and offered evidence that his patent expressly provided that two hundred acres should be reserved for each settler under a New Hampshire title, upon condition that he pay the usual New York fees, and that Carpenter had been offered this amount of land but had refused to comply." Thereupon Carpenter offered as proof of his title a certified copy of the New Hampshire patent for Shaftsbury and of Governor Wentworth's instructions relating (0 land grants, but the court excluded these documents because no evidence had been offered to show that

204 VERMONT IN THE MAKING New Hampshire ever included the land in question or that Governor Wentworth ever had authority to grant it. Carpenter was not prepared with the proof required, and the verdict was in favor of Small's tenant." Another suit was pending against Josiah Fuller to establish the title of the Rev. Michael Slaughter to two thousand acres in Bennington, a military grant which had been acquired by James Duane in 1765/~ and the Princetown proprietors brought suits against Jeremiah French, William Roberts, Gideon Brownson, and Samuel Rose, who had settled on those lands under New Hampshire grants.40 In these cases the plaintiffs claimed their titles under grants junior in date to those of the defendants, but in view of the ruling against Carpenter no defence was made and the plaintiffs won, and ultimately judgment was given against Breakenridge also." In the light of the decision of the United States Supreme Court in the Vermont-New Hampshire boundary case, we now know that proof of the authority of New Hampshire to make grants west of the Connecticut River could not be furnished by the defendants in these ejectment cases, because such authority did not exist. In consequence it would appear that the judgments in these cases resulted from the actual state of the law and the facts, and were not attribas

284 VERMONT IN THE MAKING not take any advantage, for our People did not understand Law," a statement that, when backed by a body of armed men, carried a somewhat sinister connotation. Lieutenant Governor Colden later described this gathering as a disorderly riot," and his Council ordered the arrest of Breakenridge, Samuel Robinson, the Rev. Jedediah Dewey, Nathaniel Holmes, Henry Walbridge, and Moses Robinson." They were indicted, together with some others, but not one of them was ever brought to trial. In September I770, after the trials of the ejectment cases, a second attempt was made to survey and divide the Walloomsac patent, but again the commissioners were prevented from making the survey by a body of settlers who threatened violence.':' During the ensuing winter attempts were made by the victors in the. ejectment cases to take possession of the disputed lands. A posse seized the house of Samuel Rose in Manchester, in behalf of the Princetown owners, during his absence from home, but they soon departed when they saw a body of his neighbors in the offing. Isaiah Carpenter of Shaftsbury was also briefly dispossessed, but a tenant who was put in charge for Major Small soon fled in fear. Two attempts at ousting James Breakenridge from his Walloomsac lands having failed, a large posse, which numbered about two hundred men, was gathered by Sheriff Henry Ten Eyck at Albany in July I771.15 As Robert ...

Subject: Carpenter Family Priceless Document
John,
I found your e-mail address on the Carpenter Family DNA website. I am Charles E Sibre, age 68, living in Annandale, VA. Genealogy is a hobby. My wife, Ellen, was adopted as a baby. Her adopting mother, Edith Burnham Russell, is a descendant of Elizabeth Carpenter (b.4/18/1786 Leyden, Franklin, MA - d. 09/10/1849 Craftsbury, Orleans, VT). Elizabeth was Edith's great, great grandmother. Elizabeth Carpenter is the daughter of Nathaniel Carpenter (1/13/1743 Rehoboth, Bristol, MA - dead 1786 or 1826) and Elizabeth Carpenter (maiden name) (1/13/1743 Rehoboth - died unknown Cumberland, RI).
Ellen has inherited a family scrapbook, assembled by her grandfather, that has an original, handwritten, linen-paper, sheet of the Nathaniel and Elizabeth Carpenter family - starting with their marriage 1765 through the birth of their 10th child Elizabeth in 1786.
I am searching for a Carpenter family association or group to whom I can send an image and transcription of this valuable document, but have not found one as I have for many of Edith's other old New England ancestors. Do you know of one? Of multiple ones who would be interested?
Charles

Subject: Contact from the Guild Website regarding your Carpenter study

In my wife's family records is an ORIGINAL handwritten marriage and child birth record, that is 256 years old, that is on waxed linen paper starting at the marriage of Nathaniel Carpenter (b. 1/13/1743 in Rehoboth, son of David Carpenter and Johanna Walker) and Elizabeth Carpenter (b. 12/20/1746 Rehoboth, dau of Jotham Carpenter Jr and Mehitable Thompson). It records from their marriage on 5/9/1764 in Rehoboth to the birth of their 10th child Elizabeth Carpenter b. /18/1786, plus some later family additions showing the descent line down to Amanda Root Graves and Albert Mattoon Graves. The ORIGINAL is in a family scrapbook assembled by Kenneth H Graves Russell, the father of my wife's mother. This seems to us to be a very valuable document and we will be happy to share an image of it, and a transcription of its contents (though I can't find that right now). This messaging system does not allow attachments. is there a better organization to get this information to? If interested, contact me at csibre@yahoo.com
