John Robert Carpenter, 70, of Amarillo died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Dr. Darryl W. Evetts officiating. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

John was born Aug. 3, 1945, in Arlington, Va., to Marie and Charles Carpenter. He was a veteran of the Marines, serving two tours in Vietnam. He moved to Amarillo and became one of the original gunfighters at Six Gun City at Palo Duro Canyon. He worked for Southwestern Bell for over 30 years before retiring. He married Margie Brooks on Aug. 13, 1977, in Amarillo.

John loved to bowl and coach junior bowlers. He also enjoyed coaching his daughter’s softball teams. He was a huge supporter of the activities of his daughters, his sons-in-law, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren and he made sure his voice was heard.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a granddaughter, Tanna Lee Escoto.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Carpenter; four daughters, Candis and husband David Wilson, Carrie and husband Elmer Escoto, Connie and husband Russ Hawkins and Cristy and husband Pete Lomeli, all of Amarillo; his mother, Marie Swaim of Glencoe, Ala.; two brothers, David Carpenter and wife Kathy of Statham and Georgia and Mark Elrod of Glencoe, Ala., two sisters, Marilyn and husband Tony Elrod of Glencoe, Ala., and Wanda and husband Neal Lincoln of Mayer, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and good friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to Don & Sybill Harrington Cancer Foundation to benefit the patients of Baptist Saint Anthony’s Hospice, 1600 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106.
