Mary was born June 8, 1928 to Thomas and Jane Leach of Seattle, Washington and passed away surrounded by family members on April 21, 2015 after a short illness. She was married to Lloyd Carpenter who preceded her in death in 1997 just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.
She and Lloyd raised six children, so for about the first 15 years of their married life she was a homemaker which was a feat unto itself! Six children in nine years! After the youngest was in school, Mom went to work in the cafeteria at Brighton Elementary School. Then she went to work at Russell Stover (candy store) in downtown Seattle until the store closed. Then she moved next door to Frederick & Nelson to their candy section and worked there until that store closed. This her legacy - closing two Seattle icons in the sweet shop industry! She then cared for Dad until his death in October 1997.
She was an independent spirit, never having learned to drive, she took the bus everywhere to shop and walked to church services at Paul's Catholic Church. Until the first of February of this year, she loved working in her garden and for the past 16 years attended an exercise class three days a week at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center.
She is survived by her children Margaret Silverman (Ron), Michael Carpenter, David Carpenter (Tina), Stephen Carpenter, Catherine Nestle, and Joanne Carpenter, 10 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Mass will be at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015, with internment following at Holyrood Cemetery.
