Subject: Theodocia Carpenter b. 18 November 1780 Westminster, VT
Dear John R. Carpenter,
I thought I was finished with my DAR application, but my source for an ancestor - Theodocia Carpenter Pinkham was apparently not viable. I found her birth listed in a book: A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America by Amos B. Carpenter (1898 - Press of Carpenter & Morehouse, Amherst, MA). The Comfort Carpenter family is also found in the book, "500 Settlers of Stanstead, Quebec" by B. F. Hubbard, a source DAR considered viable. Theodocia Carpenter Pinkham died 9 March 1858 in Stanstead, Quebec.
Do "Carpenter Cousins" records have birth sources for my ancestor, Theodocia Carpenter who married Samuel Pinkham ini Stanstead, Quebe?. My Mum is an Ontario-born Pinkham whose great-great-grandfather was Comfort Carpenter Pinkham born 1811 Stanstead, Quebec (without a birth record). Theodocia Carpenter's birth record was not available at the Westminster Historical Society.
I found the listing for the family at the Carpenter Cousins:
Comfort Carpenter and family at:
http://carpentercousins.com/wc-584-desc/aqwg90.htm#22684
Theodocia Carpenter married Samuel Pinkham in 1809 Stanstead, Quebec although there is also no record other than the listing in the B. F. Hubbard book. Her father, Comfort Carpenter, died on 15 April 1806 Stanstead, Quebec and her mother, Thankful Kent (or Canfield) died in 1851 in Stanstead, Quebec. On Theodocia's children's later United States census records they list their mother as "born in Massachusetts" and father as born in Vermont (which is correct). in 1780 the boundaries between Massachusetts and Vermont were different.
If you have any suggestions on how to locate a 1780 birth record for Theodocia Carpenter, do let me know.
Thank you.
Anne Manrique, daughter of an Ontario, Canada Pinkham

! This may be the lead I need to find my
way back to the source of John Carpenter b. 1797 in VT! I had about
decided that he was an alien dropped from the sky, so of course the name
Roswell (as in Roswell, NM, home of extraterrestrials) gave me pause. Now
I see all these Roswell CARPENTERs, I'm really excited. The Roswell who is
the son of Roswell was age-mate to John b. 1797 in VT, and that Roswell was
born in VT of parents from VT. The Roswell who was son/grandson of the
three Timothys was age-mate to them both. So John has two Roswells his
age, and one who is a generation older. The Tim-Tim-Tim Roswell had a son,
Roswell, who was almost exactly the age-mate of John's son, James, who had
a grandson named Roswell. Well, it makes more sense scrawled out on a
sheet of paper with arrows all over the place. But the point is, there was
a Roswell the age of John's father, there were two Roswells John's age,
there was one Roswell the same age as John's son, James, and James had a
son named Francis, and Francis had a son named Roswell. Now I need the
time to dig around and find out exactly how John and James fit into this
scheme. And Phoebe: does this do anything for you and/or the rest of the
Lost Branch Detectives?

ROSWELL CARPENTER *
Came to Northfield when the country was very new, not far from 1787, and had many trials and hardships in those early days. He was from Charlestown, N. H., and married Louisa Larkins, of Rockingham, Vt. They had five children: Elvira, b 1798; Louisa, b 1800; Roswell, b 1805; Ursula, b 1815. All born in Northfield. Mr. Carpenter, it is said, was a good dancer. So Colonel George Cobleigh and Adolphus Denny, Esq., loved to "trip the light fantastic toe in the mazy dance," and took great delight in attending parties, driving away dull care. Probably there was no scientific violining in those days, but a good deal of fiddling, and they could sing:
Hoot away despair,
Never yield to sorrow,
The blackest day will wear
A sunny face tomorrow.

Page 74 - Carpenters
Two brothers, Nathaniel and Willard Carpenter, came from Woodstock, Conn., in 1802 or 1803. Nathaniel lived at West Woodstock. lie was the second landlord in the tavern on the hill and was, at one time, the sawyer in Jacob Post's mill. He was, also, a blacksmith and carpenter. He married Lucy, sister of Salmon Gage.
They had ten children, Elisha, Luther, Gilbert, Otis, Major, Lucy, Emmeline, Silura, Anna, and Nancy. Mr. Carpenter and most of his family finally settled in Pompey.
Silura was the third child, and the only one born in Woodstock. The snow was so deep on her birthday, May 5, 1807, that the roads had to be ploughed. She married for her first husband Curtis Griffith, and had three children. The son died in infancy.
Her second husband was Harvey Allen. She survived him many years, living with her daughter, Acta until 1898 when she died at the age of ninety-one. She perfectly understood the almost lost art of carding, spinning and weaving.
When Cleveland was president, Mrs. Cleveland owned a black dog that was at one time in Cazenovia. While there it was sheared, and Mrs. Allen took sonic of the hair, carded and spun it, and knit a pair of gloves which she sent to Mr. Cleveland. She received a personal reply. and a present of five dollars from him.
Her daughter, Acta Griffeth, married the late Thomas Eastman, who worked for John C. Loomis in the tannery at Floodport, and afterward for the Warlock brothers.
They have been residents of New Woodstock more than fifty years. Their four children are Delana, Maun Barrett, Elisha, who married Eva Hubbard and and lives in Binghamton, Dwight M., of Rome, and Sarah Clancy of Cortland.
Capt. Willard Carpenter, called captain because he was commander of a state militia company, was born in 1780. His first wife was Hannah Keeney. They had twelve children; Ezekiel, David D., Amanda [Ainsworth,] Sarah (Cole Thomas,) Mary (Ainsworth,) Lucy, who died. Hiram, who married a Couable, is eighty-two years old and lives in Webster City, Iowa; Celestia [Post.) mother of Charles, Marbia (Pratt,) Ella (Thompson) and William; Fannie, Erastus, living in Iowa; Julia, and Ardelia (Sholes,) who lives in Hampton, Iowa.
Ezekiel was married three times and lived at West Woodstock in the old tavern on the hill. He kept a grocery on the southwest corner of the mad, and in his later years in the basement of the old tavern.
He made matches in square blocks, using a knife to make the divisions between the matches.
His first wife, the mother of eight children, was Sarah Marie Davis.
The children were Lyman, Calvin, Albert, John, Adelbert, James Ada, (McKevitt) and Cornelia (Worlock.) The youngest child, James, was killed at the battle of Bull Run.
Willard Carpenter lived about thirty years on the hill farm now in the possession of Deloss Burdick. About 1854 he moved on the Jedediah Morse farm where Isaac Morse first lived. Mr. Carpenter died there in 1850. His second wife was Thedy Dewey Cole, a sister of his first wife and a widow with one son, Elijah Cole, who married his cousin Sarah. Their daughter Amanda married William Estes. Both died several rears ago. Their children were Nellie (Poyle) of Morrisville, the twins Frank and Fred of Ilion, who is a carriage manufacturer, and George of Norwich.

CENSUS: 1810 US Census

MILITARY:  War of 1812
Per John David Carpenter and his wife Kristina "Tina" (she handles the genealogy) an aunt did research many years ago on Nathaniel.  They report ...
Nathnaniel Carpenter served as an enlisted private in the New York Militia (129th Regiment). He enlisted at Cazenovia, Madison County, NY. He was enlisted in Col. Elisha Farnham's Company (Regiment) in the War of 1812.  He served under Captain James Manger, Colonel Ballou. Nathaniel served from 9 Sept to 13 Nov 1814 for 66 days at Sackett's Harbor.
According to National Archieves pension records, his second wife, Widow Sally Adams, received $8.00 a month widows' pension beginning on 8 Mar 1878. Witnesses on the application for pension were Luoisa Allen (Sally's daughter) her husband Orrid D. Allen, Reuben Edgarton Justice of the Peace who knew her for 20 years. Darius Tabor (or Taber) who swore Nathaniel's death was from natural causes, Henry S. Carpenter (unknown relationship) and Major Carpenter, Nathaniel's son.

Thedy Dewey Keeney

MARRIAGE:
She had been married to a Cole and had one son Elijah Cole before her husband died. Her son Elijah Cole later married his cousin Sarah. Their daughter Amadna married William Estes. both died several years ago.
Their children were Nellie (Poyle) of Morrisville, the twins Frank and Fred of Ilion, who is a carriage manufacturer, and George of Norwich.
COMMENT:  It appears that the last paragraph seems to indicate the children of Thedy and Willard Carpenter.  But, further research is needed to confirm this.

Number 148 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H.
Carpenter, 1901.  Family on page 136 & 137.

He was a farmer at North Kingston, RI and inherited from his father the Willett estate at Boston Neck.  He is buried with his infant daughter in the Willett Burial grounds on the farm (some time after Sept. 1832).
It is reported in the above record that some nineteen memorial stones to Willetts reside there covering six generations.  The first is an old slate stone with cherubic effigies, bearing the name "Andrew Willett, 1712".
Willett was delegate from Rhode Island in September of 1832 for the first national convention in Baltimore that nominated William Wirt for President. (NOTE: Wirt lost.)
Did Willett own slaves?  SEE: Below.
