The only records I have come from an old hand written journal that was passed down from generation to generation.  Benjamin Carpenter is the first Carpenter I have mention of.  The record also mentions William Carpenter, born 1605, died at Rehobeth Mass on Feb 7, 1659. the Abigail, Samuel (b. 1644)married Patience Ide, Nathan b. 1700 married Mary?, Gideon b. 1725, then Benjamin, whom our family records start from. My record states that he was born in either 1765 or 1766, and died in 1846.  Mary Carpenter b. 7/24/1794/d. 12/18/1871 is where the Carpenter family name comes into our family.  She married Artemis Smith(b. July 12, 1972, d. October 14, 1839.  Both are buried in the Greendale Cemetery at meadville, Pa.  Their daughter, Henrietta Carpenter Smith, was my g g grandmother, was born May 27, 1822, died February 18,1907.  Please look your records over and see if these forebears of mine are in your database.  Thanks for your help.  Sincerely,  Roy A. John, Glad to hear from you. I have been reading the Carpenter messages hoping for a connect with proof. A little back ground on my Carpenters and Smiths. A family member back in the late 40's and early 50's put together a small book on the Miller Family. My 5th grt-grandfater was German, Johann Mueller, after his German Wife died (issue??), he married a Martha Farrington (can not find) and changed his name to John Miller. His son John G. I thought they were born and raised there. But they were born in Ma. and intended to marry there, but did not. I found them in Andover, Ashtabula Co., Ohio where they did marry.

This may not be alot of proof yet, but it is quite alot more that I had a year ago. The Miller that wrote the book never married, so I assume he left his notes, etc with one of his brothers. I sent them a request to see his notes, so I could bring the book up to date, They never answered my letters, even though I had put in a stamped envelope for their use. Alot of people just doesn't care to answer or they may have dumped all his notes etc. It has been 50 years since he wrote it.
I understand that there is a C-D with Carpenter Family History for sale. If so, how much and can I get one? Would like to hear what you think of what I have so far.

Which Benjamin married Elizabeth King? We have two contenders with different fathers. The two Benjamins are likely the same person?  More research needed.

Dear John:
...
Also, I could use your help in following a couple of lines.
Joseph Carpenter, Jr. of Reading Windsor Co. Vermont b. Feb 18, 1785 married a Maranny (?) from R. I.
They had sons, Ivory 1818-1892, Allen D. 1813-1861, Joseph and Benjamin and a daughter Jane Carpenter Lawton 1824-?.
In Marany's will probated in 1876 she states that Benjamin A. Carpenter was in Newark, New Jersey and that Joseph A. was in Rutland Vermont. I think I found Joseph in the 1880 census of Rutland vermont aged 70 married to a Catherine. I haven't found anything else about him. Also I have not found anything on Benjamin in New Jersey.

Marany

WILL: Children data taken from a Will found by Marcia Buffett that was filed
17 July 1876 in the Johnstown County Court House in Johnstown, NY. Note: Most
wills for Fulton county are filed here.
The will was probated July 17th, 1876 and the petitioner was Ivory H.
Carpenter. "That the said intestate left kindred entitled to her estate,
whose names and places of residence are as follows: Joseph A. Carpenter of
Rutland, Vermont; Benjamin A. Carpenter of Newark, New Jersey; Jane Carpenter
Lawton of Perth, Fulton Co., NY; and your petitioner, children of the
deceased; and the children of Allen Carpenter of Evansville, Wisconsin
deceased. That Joseph Carpenter the husband of Marany Carpenter is dead."

Subject: Carpenter lineage
Dear John and Ken:
May have found a whole new Carpenter line...and maybe not.
I have a copy of the will of Marany Carpenter abt. 1790-1876. (She was the wife of Joseph Carpenter, Jr. 1785 Reading, Windsor Co., Vt. died Feb. 1862 Northville, Fulton Co., NY.) In the will of 1876 her son Ivory Carpenter was the petitioner. The will listed her sons as: Joseph A. Carpenter of Rutland Vermont, Benjamin A. Carpenter of Newark, New Jersey. Jane Carpenter Lawton of Perth, Fulton Co., NY and Ivory Carpenter, and the descendants of Allen Carpenter deceased who are living in Evansville, Wisconsin.
Well, to make this longer story, longer. I researched in Evansville, Wisconsin for our darling Allen Carpenter's grave and found it along with a lot of biographies and obituaries. According to his burial information Allen was born in 1813 and died January 21, 1861.
Found a lot of biographies on the Rock Co., Wisconsin website including one for William H. the son of Allen.
WILLIAM H. CARPENTER. This gentleman belongs to the firm of CARPENTER &
BALLARD, dealers in grain and coal at Evansville, Rock County, and has long been favorably identified with the business interests of this city.
Mr. CARPENTER was born in Hamilton County, near Northville, N.Y., March 22, 1843, and is a son of Allen D. and Mary Ann (WADSWORTH) CARPENTER, natives of Vermont and New York respectively. Four sons and three daughters were born to them, of whom all but one are now living; John W., of Janesville; William H.; Mary Ann, the wife of Alexander McKINNEY, of Evansville; Josiah of the town of Union, Rock County; Emma J., the wife of Edwin WINTER, of Evansville, Wisconsin in the 'fifties, locating in the town of Union, two miles east of Evansville, where he lived until he died in 1860, at the age of forty-seven. His widow survived until 1893, and was seventy-seven at the time of her death. They were both Methodists. The paternal grandfather of William H., Allen D. CARPENTER, was a native of England, and came to this country, settling in New York, where he died at the age of eighty; he was the father of four children. Josiah WADSWORTH, the father of Mary Ann, mentioned above, is supposed to have come from Ireland, and settled in Hamilton County, N.Y., where he followed farming, and died there an old man; he was the father of thirteen children. William H. CARPENTER was reared on the paternal acres in Hamilton County until he was eleven years of age. He came to Rock County that year, and here he attained his manhood. He had his education in the district school, and in 1864 he bought a farm of 120 acres, upon which he made many permanent and substantial improvements, and was engaged in its cultivation until 1882. That year he moved into Evansville, and seventeen years later he sold the farm. He was an active and busy man through all these years, and though there is but little change and adventure in his career, it has been honorable and creditable throughout.
On Jan. 1, 1865, occurred the marriage of William H. CARPENTER and Miss Elizabeth
BALLARD, daughter of Gailus and Sarah (FELT) BALLARD. They became the parents of three children, William, Cora and Grace. William died at the age of seven. Cora is at home, and Grace is a student at the Normal school in Milwaukee. Mr. CARPENTER belongs to Union Lodge, No. 32, A.F. & A.M., Evansville Chapter, No. 35, R.A.M., and is a stanch and devoted member of the order. He is a Republican, and is highly esteemed by many friends. He lives at No. 232 Church street, Evansville, and has been a resident of the community forty-six years
I have underlined everything that I think is wrong with biography. In the first place Mary Ann Wadsworth's lineage is wrong. Her father was Josiah all right, but I have her very well documentd all the way back to General Thomas Wadsworth 1716 in this country. And then there is this business of Allen. Unless there were two Allen Carpenter's born at the same time and both living in Evansville, Wisconsin, his grandfather was NOT Allen, Carpenter from England. The only thing that I can think of is that Joseph Jr.'s middle name was Allen, so they called him Allen to differentiate between him and his father (happened A LOT in this Carpenter family). But even then, Joseph came from Vermont, his father from Conn. etc. His lineage is English all right: William Carpenter born about 1600 in England but after that try America for several generations!
I wrote to the website coordinator and asked her if it were possible to give both versions and let researchers decide for themselves. I don't know about you, but lots of times I've had to choose because the information can't be positively documented and it's anybodies "best guess". But when it is a "guesstimate", I put that information in my notes.
Have you got any information about this Allen????
Until further notice from you, I'm putting this Allen in our line with a notation that this is "Possibly" the son of Joseph and Marany. Waiting anxiously for your reply,
Marcia Buffett pinezone@mybizz.net

Was this the Joseph listed below?

Marriages by Rev. Joseph F. Spier:
Joseph C. Carpenter of Hope,Hamilton,NY to Miss Mary Lobdell at the bride's

MORE:
BUT then I also have a J. C. Carpenter died Dec. 8, 1884 age 65 (born 1819)

I'm confused as to who this Mary Ann Carpenter is. She is listed in the
1850 census of Hope, Hamilton Co., NY as head of household and age 36 (born
1814 in Ireland) with children: Charles 13, John 11 (1839), Laura 9,
William 8 (1842), and Mary Ann 2.
There is ANOTHER John W. who is the son of Samuel B. Carpenter and Julia
Ann. He was born in 1845 and appears in the 1850 census Hope, Hamilton Co.,
with parents Sam and Julia and a sister Harriet A. born 1849.
Does this Will fit into your line somewhere ?:
Will written April 20, 1786 probated Feb 26, 1787. Joseph Carpenter of
Jericho, Osterbay Township, Queens Co. wife Elizabeth daugthers Elizabeth
and Abigail Cook; sons Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin and Henry; grandchildren
Freelove dau. of son Isaac, Joseph son of son-in-law William Cook. Land in
Limington Township, Vermont and other real estate.
I didn't see a death date that would match the will, nor a William Cook, so
I've assumed that this is from another line. I guess it was the "Vermont
realestate" and the names Joseph and Benjamin that grabbed my interest.

2914. Robert Mason Nelson Carpenter

I Found the will of Sarah Brownell Carpenter wife of William V. which
confirmed their children. Am trying to get pension papers of William V. as
he was a Civil War Vet. Will let you know. This William V. Carpenter is
probably the son of Robert N.  Per Ken W.

NAME: Robert Nelson is correct with baptism of 11 Aug. 1786.  In another
record he was listed as Robert Mason/Nason with birth 6 Aug. 1786.

Robert N. and Betsey Clark Carpenter are buried in Hope, Hamilton Co., NY.
Reuben S. Carpenter born in the Town of Hope, Hamilton County New York
in 1821  is believed to be Robert Nelson's son but this information is
speculative at this time. All the evidence to date points to such a
relationship.

Dear Ken:
When I looked up the census for our Robert Carpenter I realized we were missing a few children. This weekend I visited my cousin Susie Dunn and she brought this huge taped together family tree that was made by someone in
the Dunn family way-way back. Had all kinds of names and the connections...no dates. However It listed more children for Robert Carpenter!!! (* below)
Our new additions are:
*Laura Carpenter m. to a Conklin (couldn't read his fisrt name but I'll find out which one (have lots of Conklin info). Will get back to you on this one.
*Clark Carpenter m. to Mary Lobdell (have lots of Lobdell info so will try to find her date and parents). Their children were: Elizabeth m. to Harmon Fisher, Wesley (John or James Wesley?), Laura m. to William VanSlyke,
Herman m. to Emma Olmstead, Elsie m. to Joseph Olmstead, and what looked like Anansis Carpenter m. to Sarah Cooper. In the census I have found an Anansis C. Carpenter and an Anansis Carpenter, Jr. Something tells me like
all the Carpenter's in this family. This "Clark" Carpenter is really Anansis Clark Carpenter or vice-versa Will do more hunting. I have this census info but never entered it because I didn't know where he belonged...now at least that mystery is solved.
We already had an Andrew (1830) m. to Susan Perry. However this also listed their children:
Delbert Carpenter m. to Holly Lawrence, Ellen Carpenter m. to Nathaniel Eddy, and Perry Carpenter m. to Maude Flansburg
*George Carpenter m. to Rosetta Button and their children : Riley Carpenter, Fayette, and Emma
will find dates for them.
*Hannah Carpenter m. to Richard Greenfield: Children were Jerome, Lydia, Numan, Lucretia.
Under Allen Danforth (or Danforth Allen) m. to Diane L. Kathan we have children: John R. Carpenter married to Mary E. "Polly" Blake, and Everett Carpenter m. to Francis Miner. Now we need to add: Sarah E. Carpenter m. to
Charles Grennell, May Carpenter m. to Frank Shepard.
So now you have more of Reuben's siblings. And oh yes, you also have a confirmation that Reuben was the son of Robert!
However, this list did not include Samuel or Frances. By the looks of the writing and the names listed, I'd say this person making out the list was born about 1920 so might not have known about Sam or Frances. Because
Marany (wife of Joseph) did not list Sam or Frances in her will (because Sam and Frances both died before then) we still don't know it Sam or Frances belongs to Robert or his brother Joseph. So that' still up for
grabs. Will go back to census and see if I can get a clue from that.
Hope your Memorial Weekend is great. The sun finally came out here.

OBIT: submitted by Ken W.
July 1, 1898 Madison County Times
Reuben J. Carpenter
He d. at his home 3/4 of a mile north of Chittenango  Stn. at about 1 PM on Sunday last. Mr C. was born in the town of Hope, Montgomery Co. NY, Oct 1, 1821. At the age of 19 he purchased his time from his father and started in business for himself. He was a stone cutter by trade and went to work for the state on the Black River Canal, where he worked about a year. Then he removed to Orwell, Oswego county where he remained about 2 years. While at Orwell he was married to Miss Hannah Pennock.(a sister of the late Ebenezer Pennock). From Orwell he removed to Three River Point where he resided about a year, removing from that place to Oak Hill. Here Mr. Carpenter was employed by Capt. Cady, one of the old pioneers of this town. When the Erie Canal was enlarged Mr Carpenter removed to Bolivar where he had charge of the work of obtaining stone for the bridge and culvert at that place. From Bolivar he removed to his late residence north of Chittenango Station and lived there until the time of his death.
The “Squire” as Mr. C. was known hereabouts was in early life a Democrat, but became a Republican at the formation of that party and has since been an active member. Some years ago he was elected Justice of Peace which was the only office he ever held.
About 2 years ago he was troubled with a complication of lung and kidney trouble which with the infirmities of age, proved too much for his naturally strong constitution.
The Squire will be missed much about the Station where he was a familiar figure. The immediate vicinity of the “Station” at the time he came here was practically an unbroken forest and Mr. C’s reminiscences of the early days of his residence were very interesting. In 1863 Mr. C. went to the state of Ohio, remaining in that state until 1864, when he was employed by the U.S. Gov’t as foreman (with the rank of Cap’t) in the Gov’t ship yards at Chattanooga, Tenn., where he remained until the close of the war, since which time he has followed the business of carpenter and builder.
Mr. C. was the father of 18 , 251 of whom, George W. Carpenter, Mrs. Mathew Chapley, Mrs. George Bender, Mrs. Myron Olmstead and William E. Carpenter together with his wife and a brother Geo. H. Carpenter of Sheboyagan Wisc survive him. The funeral which took place Tues at the Free Methodist Church was largely attended. Rev E.D. Carpenter of Rome officiating. Interment was made at the Fyler Settlement.
