Irene M. Carpenter Ellis
Birth:  Dec. 26, 1908
Platte County
Missouri, USA
Death:  May 19, 1979
Irene M. Carpenter was one of two children born to Zenith Alvis Carpenter and his first wife Effie Maude Collins, the daughter of Harrison C. Collins and Ann Eliza Herndon from Platte County, MO. Zenith and Effie married Feb 16, 1908 in the home of Will Herndon (a relative). Effie belonged to the 'Little Platte Singing Class' held at the Little Platte Baptist Church near Edgerton and thus we were lucky enough to find a photo of her from around the time she married. After their 2nd child Marguerite Carpenter was born Jan 30 1911 two major events happened. Effie (Collins) Carpenter's mother died April 28, 1912 and Effie herself succumbed just 5 months later on Sept 21, 1912, leaving two young toddlers. Effie died from complications following an operation (locked bowel) complicated by a ruptured tube pregnancy. She had been under treatment for 2 mos from the ruptured tube pregnancy problems. but was treated after an operation for 10 days before death at 8 am. Death Cert #29674 Jackson Co MO.
Zenith Alvis Carpenter became a widower with two young toddlers. He remarried on June 10, 1914 Myrtle Seuell who became stepmother to the two girls from the first marriage. Together Zenith and 2nd wife had an additional nine children and left Platte Co MO for Westphalia, Kansas where he farmed.
Irene M Carpenter, eldest child of Zenith Alvis Carpenter married first, Merrell Simmons born 1905 in Brookport, Illinois, the son of Oddie Amazar Simmons and Maggie Taylor. Merrell had had a previous marriage 11 May 1925 to Hazel Wilkins (divorced by 1929 and she remarried Harold Harter). This was Merrell's 2nd marriage. Second wife Irene and Merrell Simmons had two children, Merrelene Simmons and John Merrell Simmons. Irene and her first husband Merrell Simmons divorced in 1940 in Dade County, Florida. Irene M (Carpenter) Simmons remarried George L. Ellis.
