Subject: New Carpenter information
...
John Carpenter, b. 1670, is on your CD and is listed as having been born
in Alderton. Thereafter, all the ancestors are on your CD. I have in my
possession a copy of a handwritten history of the ancestors of William
Carpenter, which the genealogist discovered at the Chester Co.
Historical Archives. It is not signed, but it is initialled "C.F.C."
That document provides the last name for Alice as "DOBBIS" and also
provides some of the dates which were not on your CD. The full text of
that document is as follows:"William Carpenter, of Alderton, Gloustershire England came to Penna.
sometime between 1715 and 1725, now married to Margaret Richards in
Hokesson Meeting about 1733 and resided in New Garden Twp., Chester Co.,
Penna. and died 1749 leaving four children, John, Thomas, Sarah and
Albina -- We are descended from John and Thomas, John being our mother's
grandfather and Thomas our father's grandfather -- William Carpenter was
baptised in the Church at Alderton 17 Dec 1695, left a brother John at
Alderton who was buried Aug 2nd 1789 -- From the Church records
beginning 1596 we find that Wm. and John descended from John (& Mary)
who was baptised Mar 6th 1670, died 12th Oct 1736, tombstone in
churchyard at Alderton, he descended from Thomas Carpenter (and Alice
Dobbis) who was baptised 22 Mar 1628, buried 17th Aug 1701, who
descended from John Carpenter (and Elinor Carpenter Wydant) who was
buried 25th March 1636.
Our family the Glouctershire Carpenters are of the same family as the
Herefordshire Carpenters. The Herefordshire Carpenters had a family seat
at Ashton [unintelligible word; poss. Umlach?] in Glostershire and
another called the "Homme" in Herefordshire which they possessed over
500 years -- The family arms Paly of six, argent and gules, Chevron
azure, 3 cross crosslets or. Crest a globe in a frame --
An uncle of Lord Carpenter, John Delaval Carpenter, Earl of
Tyconnel, so the Earl wrote me (C.F.C.) in 1851, sold the "Homme."
The family in ancient times is a matter of English History."I am in possession also of a copy of William Carpenter's will, which
states he was a "Taylor" who purchased 174 acres in Chester Co., PA.
This might jive with some of the information on your CD where some of
the Carpenters were listed as "wever" or perhaps in the textile
business. Some of his male heirs are listed as "merchant tailors."If you have any idea who "C.F.C." is, I'd love to know.
Would you like me to send you the register for the descendants of
William as I put that document together? Let me know. Thanks, John.
