130. Francis Carpenter

Francis married and had 8 children. The following is from Barbara Lee.

Francis Carpenter is listed as either “merchant tailor” or “tailor” in various censuses. In 1860 he and his family are enumerated in the 5th ward, Philadelphia -- most likely, 3rd & Cypress Sts. as listed in his brother John’s obituary -- as follows:
Property: $75,000 / Assets: $20,000
Habitants: Francis, age 47; Mary, age 37; Harry, age 19; Annie, age 16; Ella, age 15; Chas., age 13; Mary, age 11; Adelaide, age 9; John, age 7; and Emma, age 4.
In 1870 he is now living in the 4th ward, 14th District, Philadelphia, as follows:
Property: $100,000 / Assets: $10,000
Francis, age 58; Ella, age 22 or 26; Anna, age 25; Mary, age 19; Adelaide, age 17; Emma, age 13; Harry (now listed as a “merchant” with assets of $10,000) age 26; Charles, a clerk, age 22; and John, age 15.
In 1880 he is listed in the 5th ward, District 4 (page 255b) as follows:
Francis, age 69, tailor; LOUISA, age 64 is listed as his spouse. But Mary has not died yet. Mary & Francis died in the same year, 1883. Were Mary & Francis divorced? At that late age? Seems far-fetched. Could the censustaker have made a mistake in the name? Possibly. Remains a mystery. Remaining residents are: Charles, agent, age 32; Ella, age 30; John, salesman, age 27; Mary, age 25; Adeline (Addie), age 22; and Emma, age 18.
