Hanover or Hannover (German:  Hannover, [haˈnoːfɐ]), on the river Leine, is the capital of the federal state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), Germany and was once by personal union the family seat of the Hanoverian Kings of Great Britain, under their title as the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg (later described as the Elector of Hanover). At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the Electorate was enlarged to become the capital of the Kingdom of Hanover.
In addition to being the capital of Lower Saxony, Hanover was the capital of the administrative area Regierungsbezirk Hannover (Hanover region) until Lower Saxony's administrative regions were disbanded at the beginning of 2005. Since 2001 it is part of the Hanover district (Region Hannover), which is a municipal body made up from the former district (Landkreis Hannover) and city of Hanover (note: although both Region and Landkreis are translated as district they are not the same).

CHAPTER THREE
...
THOMAS CARPENTER B. CA 1770, AND WIFE, ELIZABETH RAINEY

A second son of Jacob Sr is Thomas Carpenter that married Elizabeth Rainey.  I think he came to Louisiana before his father.  He was here by 1802.  He is listed on the ledger of Cochran and Rae.  In1805 he is a witness in a document concerning the shooting of a cow.  He lived a few miles northeast of his father on the Comite River.  Land ####.  He sold that land ????

This involves the land on Big and Little Sandy Creeks, William Cain, Jacob Carpenter and David Jackson all lived on adjacent land.  I think this Thomas Carpenter is the son of Old Jacob and is on the 1820 census.   I am a Jackson, Cain and Carpenter

CHAPTER THREE
(continued)
------------------------

Thomas Carpenter Sr. with the 1802 blotter and Spanish 1806 land document for 500 arpents.  The Land Claims map shows Thomas Carpenter on the east side of Comite River at the northern end of Blackwater Road near the Zachary area.  This may be that land or not for the 500 arpents.  His wife was Elizabeth Rainey.

His daughter, Mary Carpenter b. 1794 is also my line. And documented.  Her marriage record lists her parents as Thomas Carpenter and Elizabeth Rainey.  (There was a William Rainey in The Ms Terr. With Jacob C and Wm Cain.  In 1805.

Mary Browning and her son, Isaac Browning2Jr. lived in 1804-1807 on the east bank of the Amite River near what is now Watson, La.  Joseph Clayton obtained the land after her.  See documents.

If you look at a map of the area, if you cross the Amite River you are very near William Cain’s property and just across Sandy Creek to the northwest is the land of Jacob Carpenter, who was Mary Carpenter’s grandfather.  You can see how Isaac Browning2Jr. and Mary Carpenter met.

I had wondered why Isaac Browning and Mary 1794 buy land from Lewis Hubbs Carpenter and move right in the middle of this other Carpenter family?  It is because Lewis Hubbs Carpenter was her first cousin, son of Jacob Jr. and also a grandson of Jacob Sr.

May 21, 1837
Judges Books P p.374 shows where her Mary F. Carpenter sold 300 acres to each Sarah Carpenter Cook and Lewis H Carpenter.

Then seven month later, LH sells 150 acres to Isaac Browning, Jr.  Isaac is married to yet another Mary Carpenter b. 1794, daughter of Thomas Carpenter and Elizabeth Rainey.

DOCUMENTS FOR THOMAS CARPENTER SR AND ELIZABETH RAINEY
1805
The first document that I have is 1805 April 12 for a Deposition of Thomas Carpenter regarding a cow that was butchered for meat by Thomas Brannon.  Richard Devall was also deposed.  Mr. Raney was mentioned as accompanying Thomas Carpenter on that day.  Thomas Brannon had to pay James McGowen for time and expenses.  The document says that this incident happened in February last which would be February 1805.  This is the first date I have found for Thomas Carpenter in Louisiana.  Spanish West Florida Records Vol X p. 71 04/12/1805.

**Note check, I think 1803 he was listed on Henderson account book or Cochran and Ray Book.  If so this is the earliest.

If he is the son of Jacob, he settled in Louisiana before Jacob.  In 1805 Jacob is still in the Mississippi Territory with William Cain and William Rainey.  However, note that the Mr. Raney above was here in 1805.  I think this is Joseph Rainey, who was a witness:  Joseph Raney age 29 in 1805 b. 1776 for the marriage of Benjamin Browning to Patience Heaton in Baton Rouge.  Isaac Browning Sr and Jr. were also in Louisiana by 1805.

1806
The second document is written in Spanish in 1806 August 28 to Senor Governador.  It is for Thomas Carpenter’s acquisition of 500 arpents of land.  1 arpent = .846.28 acres.  This would be for 423.14 acres.  This is the land on the Comite River.

1809
1809 September 17
Marriage of their daughter, Mary Carpenter to Isaac Browning (Downey).  It lists Thomas Carpenter and Elizabeth Rainey as her parents.  Sept 17, 1809 EBR, La. BR St Joseph Records Catholic Diocese, even though they were not Catholic, living under Spanish control.  His parents were Benjamin and Mary Taylor.  Witnessed by Abiel Draughan and William Taylor (SJO-3,91).
Note:  Isaac Browning was living on the Amite River near Chambers Cemetery and Watson today.  If you cross the river to the northeast, you are very near the Sandy Creek Carpenters.  I think Thomas sold his land on the Comite and moved closer to Sandy Creek.

1810 Census Not listed but not unusual.

1813
This is Thomas Carpenter that settled La on the Comite River ca 1813.  This is located at the end of Blackwater Road near Zachary, La.
See land claims.Township Map T44SR2E # 48 for 196.25 acres and  #53 for 443.45 acres (Total 640 acres) both on  Cert 344 Thomas Carpenter. I do not know if this is part of the same land of 1806 on 500 arpents.  The 1813 date is just a date to show when it was registered not settled.

Children of Thomas Carpenter Sr and Elizabeth Rainey:
Mary Carpenter b. 1794
Thomas Carpenter, Jr. b. ca 1795 m. Patience Waltman
William Carpenter b. ca 1790-1799 m. Mary Christmas, widow Browning

We have Thomas Carpenter in 1806 with 500 arpents of land.  Also Thomas Carpenter in 1813 settled on the Comite River with 640 acres.

1820 Census EBR La over 45+  yrs old on Thompson Creek.  wife 26-45.  Elizabeth Rainey could be b. 1775 and be in this category.  They fit the ages. Who are the children? Daughter Mary, married in 1809 and is listed with her husband, Isaac Browning, Jr.

1830 Census EBR, La.
Male 50-60 This would be Thomas Carpenter Sr.
Male 20-30 Could be William who married widow, Mary Christmas Browning and her children 2M 2F
Male 10-15
Male 5-10
Male under 5
Female 40-50 Could be Elizabeth Rainey?  She would have been 15 when Mary was born.
Female 15-20
Female 10-15
Female 5-10

Their daughter, Mary Carpenter, is married and living two houses away.  Husband is Isaac Browning (Brownin on this census) she was born 1794 and Isaac b. 1784.  *See 1812 affidavit.  This is definitely Mary and Isaac and Thomas Carpenter, her father.  See their marriage license 1809 St.  Joseph's records listing their parents.  Thomas Carpenter and Elizabeth Rainey.

Mary Carpenter and Isaac Browning Census Records

1830 census EBR list Isaac Brownin with family wife age would be 36 b. 1794 which matches the 1812 affidavit.

1850 Census lists Mary Browning's b. 1794 birthplace as Louisiana.  Have document. 56.  It is important to note that Mary is widowed and living next door to her sister in law, Patience Waltman Carpenter, mother of Phillip Carpenter.  This is Murray’s line.  You will see that  Mary Carpenter Browning was the daughter of Thomas Sr. and Patience was married to Thomas Jr. who was also the child of Thomas Sr.

1860 age 66 living with son  Isaac Browning state b. Ga

1870 Census lists Mary Browning's birthplace as Louisiana.  Have document. Port Hudson age 76

1900 Census Records for East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana lists Isaac Thomas
Browning, son of Isaac T.  Browning and Mary Carpenter Browning, and shows
the birthplace of Mary Carpenter as Alabama.  But remember the Mississippi Territory was owned by Ga, Al, Fl, Ms, Spanish.  So the different states fit.

Thomas Carpenter Jr., son of Thomas Sr. and Elizabeth Rainey, married Patience Waltman ca. 1820 so he would be out of the house.
Also remember that William Carpenter married Mary Christmas Browning, widow of John R. Browning ca. 1828 with several children.

The younger children in Thomas Sr.'s household could be grandchildren or step grandchildren.

It is unbelievable that so may Carpenter men married a woman named Mary and how many named their daughters Mary.

This complicates understanding many of the documents but you can get past it.  You must attach a birth date to the Marys.  You must also check the census records very carefully.

1810 and 1820, William Carpenter is listed in Red Wood Creek in Feliciana Parish. The 1820 census shows: 1M (16-26 3M (<10) 1F (16-26) 1F (10-16).

I oabtained a great deal of documented information from my Devall relatives when I began my research on my father's family. It was in that material that I found that William C. Devall, Jr. married (1) Louise Carpenter, bn.ca 1822. They had three children: Willaim ca 1852; Louise ca 1854/1855, and Henerietta (ca 1848) {*This Henerietta was to be my great-grandfather Alfred Dalton Carpenter's first wife}.
When Louise died ca. 1854/55, William married 2) her sister Sarah (Safford) Carpenter, whose husband had died leaving her with one child, Richard Stafford. Sarah and William were raising his three children, her son, and their son, when he died.
Sarah then married William's brother, Richard, who had lost his first wife Sara Allen ( one of their daughters, Elizabeth Jane, was to be my great-grandfather Alfred Dalton Carpenter's second wife & my great-frandmother). In the end, Sara Carpenter and Richard Thomas ended up raising the children from all these marriages.
Although the Devall research stated that Louise and Sara Carpenter were the daughters of : William C. Carpenter and Martia (Mary) Christmas, there was nothing more on William and Mary Christmas in the notes. If the Devalls who did all the research had information on them, it wasn't in the material they sent to me. I have always thought there must be a connection of William to Thomas Carpenters but had not found any documentation to support that. I know that in 1810 and 1820, William Carpenter is listed in Red Wood Creek in Feliciana Parish. The 1820 census shows: 1M (16-26 3M (<10) 1F (16-26) 1F (10-16). That would mean the 1820 William would have been born between 1794 and 1804. However, In order to have those children I would lean toward the 1794 date, which would put him in the same age range as Mary Carpenter, Thomas, and Jacob. How does all this tie in with what you know about Mary Carpenter Browning?
There are a number of mentions of William Carpenter in the West Florida Spanish records. I'll look through those. Remember the article I wrote you about telling of Louis's Grandfather (great-grandfather?) Do you think that there might be any information in the Baton Rouge papers regarding that plantation of his that was known in 1859 as "Hope Estate? If he was a merchant, maybe we can tract some records in the Spanish Records of that period.

DEATH: This is not this William Carpenter!! as 1840 census lists the above William Carpenter with children and wife

John, Karen and Noel,
I have been able to find the location in Germany as Furfeld. You can note that Catherine's birth location seems different but everything seems the same between two of the documents.
Also note it lists Tobias' parents (I am assuming all this as I cannot read German) on the marriage document.
I am also not sure if that is the correct Tobias arriving on the Beejapore as you can see from the passenger list that it does not have Catherine listed but has several others instead. Maybe I am mistaken???
Dave.
