Samuel married Elizabeth Finley before 1827 in Monroe County. They had the following children:
Robert, born 15 Mar 1837 - died 15 Feb 1905; Susannah, born 1831 (married John E. Davis 3 Mar 1851 in Noble County, Ohio); David, born 1832 - died 1903 in Star, Haskell County, Oklahoma; Jacob, born 23 Apr 1840 - died 9 Apr 1912 in Star, Haskell County, Oklahoma; Samuel B., born 4 Jul 1842 - died 11 Nov 1922; Elizabeth, born 12 Nov 1843 - died 29 Jan 1929 (married Thomas Harrison); Sevilla, born 1846 - died 12 Dec 1886 (married George Adams in Seneca, Monroe County, Ohio); Finley, born 16 Sep 1851 - died 22 Dec 1902; Thomas, born 3 May 1853 - died 16 Mar 1927.
All the children were born in Ohio.

The family moved to Wetzel County, WV, about 14 Aug 1870. Samuel sold about 40 acres in Seneca TWP on 22 May 1848.

Samuel Carpenter died of 'old age' at 91 years, 4 months, 16 days of age. He died at his residence on Long Drain Run outside of Earnshaw, Wetzel County. Informant was his son Thomas.

The following is a transcript of his eulogy:
"Another veteran has gone over the river, after fifty years of service in the Master's vineyard. The subject of this sketch, Father Samuel Carpenter, departed this life December 27, 1893, aged 91 years, 4 months, and 15 days.

Father Carpenter obeyed the Savior fifty years ago in the state of Ohio, His wife, eighty seven years of age, is still living. She also obeyed the Savior years ago, thus side by side they walked together, battling for a home in Heaven until the Master called her companion to the spirit land, thus leaving her behind, waiting and willing for the Master's call.

They had born to them twelve children of which number eight are still living, and all members of the church. Thomas, the seventh son, is elder of the Earnshaw congregation.

Father Carpenter two years ago had a paralytic stroke, which affected his mind and destroyed his speech. Mother Carpenter for some years past has been blind.

I was not at home at the time of the death of Father Carpenter, but some of those present at his burial told me that the most touching scene they ever witnessed was to see Mother Carpenter, after she had been carried to the coffin, lay her hand upon his cold form to hear her talk. It was enough to subdue the hardest heart. Nothing but the grace of God can sustain us under such trying circumstances.

Dearest Father, how you suffered till God called you from your pain to that bright grand holy mansion through endless years with Him to reign. The golden gates were opened. A gentle voice said, 'Come,' and with farewell spoken, you sweetly entered home. At rest from all possible sighing and tears. At rest through God's endless, wonderful years at home and with the blessed."
